Narcotics investigation in Meriden turns up multiple types of drugs, stolen gun and about $60K

A man was arrested following a narcotics investigation that led to a search of his Meriden residence and vehicle last week that allegedly turned up a stolen gun, multiple types of drugs and more than $60,000 in suspected drug trafficking proceeds. Kemar Smith, 27, was arrested last Wednesday on charges of operating a drug factory, possession of a controlled substance, risk of injury to a child, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of narcotics with intent to sell, according to the Meriden Police Department. Police said the Crime Suppression Unit in April and May conducted an investigation into alleged narcotics trafficking in the city that led to Smith being identified as a suspect. Investigators obtained a search warrant for his residence and vehicle. The search allegedly turned up about 997 grams of cocaine, 51 grams of crack cocaine and three grams of fentanyl, police said. Investigators also reported finding a stolen HK 9mm firearm and $64,208 in suspected drug proceeds. Smith was initially held on a $1 million bond and arraigned in New Haven Superior Court. His bail was reduced during the hearing to $750,000, which he has since posted, according to court records. Smith has not entered a plea to the charges, records show. He is due back in court June 18.

CT man charged in Meriden hit-and-run crash involving pedestrian struck by two vehicles

Police have made an arrest in connection with a hit-and-run collision in Meriden involving a 73-year-old pedestrian who was struck by two vehicles on Thursday. Officers responded to the area of Park Street and Center Street at 12:10 p.m. on the report of a man with a head injury lying in the road, according to Sgt. Michael Boothroyd of the Meriden Police Department. Boothroyd said emergency crews found that the 73-year-old man had been struck by two vehicles. He was treated at the scene and flown via LifeStar to an area trauma center. As of Friday afternoon, Boothroyd said he was in stable condition. According to Boothroyd, the initial investigation found that the pedestrian was 'legally crossing the street' when he was struck and knocked to the ground by the driver of a blue Ford Explorer with New Jersey license plates. The driver allegedly left the scene without stopping to help the man or calling authorities. While the pedestrian was on the ground, Boothroyd said he was run over by the driver of a red Toyota RAV4. The Toyota driver, a 41-year-old woman, stopped and remained at the scene. She has been cooperative with police, Boothroyd said. Patrol officers and detectives investigated the crash and found the Ford Explorer near the Meriden Public Library. The driver was identified as 31-year-old Diego Mosqura-Garcia, according to Boothroyd. Boothroyd alleged that Mosqura-Garcia admitted to his involvement and was arrested. He faces charges of evading responsibility in a motor vehicle collision causing serious injuries, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and failure to exercise due care near a pedestrian. He was released on a $5,000 bond and is expected to appear in Meriden Superior Court on March 20. This crash remains under investigation by the Meriden Police Department Crash Reconstruction Unit. One dead, two others injured after vehicle strikes bridge abutment in Meriden

A man was killed and two others were injured in a crash in Meriden early Friday when a vehicle struck a bridge abutment. The crash was reported at 1:43 a.m. in the area of South Colony Road and Powers Drive, according to Sgt. Michael Boothroyd of the Meriden Police Department. Boothroyd said a preliminary investigation found that a 2007 Honda Accord was being driven north on South Colony Road when it collided head-on with an Amtrak train bridge abutment. All three occupants of the Accord were taken to an area hospital. The driver, a 20-year-old man, was tended to by medics and members of the Meriden Fire Department. He succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to Boothroyd. He has not been identified. Boothroyd said the victim's family has been notified and have been cooperative with the investigation. The two passengers suffered injuries not considered life-threatening and remained in the hospital as of Friday afternoon, Boothroyd said. The bridge and train tracks were 'thoroughly inspected' and deemed safe for roadway traffic and train services, Boothroyd said. The road in the area of the crash was closed for about four hours while officials were at the scene. The crash is being investigated by the Meriden Police Accident Reconstruction Unit. Anyone with information has been asked to contact Sgt. M. Hartline at 203-630-6201.
