Narcotics investigation in Meriden turns up multiple types of drugs, stolen gun and about $60K
Kemar Smith, 27, was arrested last Wednesday on charges of operating a drug factory, possession of a controlled substance, risk of injury to a child, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of narcotics with intent to sell, according to the Meriden Police Department.
Police said the Crime Suppression Unit in April and May conducted an investigation into alleged narcotics trafficking in the city that led to Smith being identified as a suspect. Investigators obtained a search warrant for his residence and vehicle.
The search allegedly turned up about 997 grams of cocaine, 51 grams of crack cocaine and three grams of fentanyl, police said. Investigators also reported finding a stolen HK 9mm firearm and $64,208 in suspected drug proceeds.
Smith was initially held on a $1 million bond and arraigned in New Haven Superior Court. His bail was reduced during the hearing to $750,000, which he has since posted, according to court records.
Smith has not entered a plea to the charges, records show. He is due back in court June 18.

A 16-year-old girl and two boys, aged 14 and 15, have appeared in court charged with the murder of a man in a seaside resort. Kent police were called to the Warden Bay Road area of Leysdown-on-Sea, on the Isle of Sheppey, shortly after 7pm on Sunday, following an altercation involving a small number of people. Alexander Cashford, 49, was confirmed dead at the scene, with the force saying multiple injuries to his body were reported. The three teenagers, all from London, are thought to have been on holiday in Kent at the time of the attack. They were jointly charged with murder on Tuesday and appeared at Medway Magistrates on Wednesday afternoon. The defendants were accompanied in the well of the court by their parents, while other family members watched from the public gallery. Prosecuting, Dylan Bradshaw said: 'What we know is that Alexander Cashford, a 49-year-old male, shortly after 7pm on Sunday August 10, went to the beach area of Warden's Bay. 'About an hour and five mins later, he was pronounced dead – during that period, he was the subject of a violent assault.' The attack is alleged to involve a glass bottle and rocks being thrown, the court heard. The 16-year-old and 14-year-old both cried during the hearing while the 15-year-old looked at the floor, rocking slightly. A 12-year-old girl, arrested on Tuesday in Basildon, Essex, is still in custody. Japanese star convicted of indecent assault in Hong Kong
A Hong Kong court on Wednesday found J-pop artist Kenshin Kamimura guilty of indecent assault after he harassed a woman working as his interpreter at a restaurant earlier this year. Kamimura, 26, is a former member of the boy band ONE N'ONLY, which expelled him shortly after the allegation. Fans queued to get into court for hours before the hearing, and some broke down in tears upon learning Kamimura had been convicted. The court heard Kamimura touched the woman's thighs multiple times despite her objections, and invited her to go to the bathroom with him. Magistrate Peter Yu found he had assaulted her, adding his behaviour "clearly shows disrespect for women". The incident took place in March during a celebratory dinner, after a fan meet for which the woman had been working as an interpreter for Kamimura and others. The Japanese star was fined HK$15,000 ($1,900). Kamimura, who is also known as an actor in the Japanese drama "Our Youth", hugged his court translator upon hearing he would be fined without facing jail time, media reports said. Kamimura got "what he deserved", Yu said, adding that "had the victim not refused to remain silent and courageously come forward, she would have suffered an unpleasant experience in silence". But ardent fans inside and outside the court were in tears. Chan, a 30-year-old screenwriter and fan who gave only her last name, said she had come from northern China to watch the court session. She told AFP before the verdict that the trial has had a negative impact on Kamimura's image, and had incited "public outbursts of vitriol against the artist". twa/reb/rsc
