Art therapy: Kaushambi jail inmates find solace in colours & brushstrokes
Prayagraj: At the crack of dawn, 26-year-old
Manish Kumar
, one of the 800 inmates at Kaushambi district jail, unleashes his creativity. Armed with colours of hope and brush, he brings his imagination to life, conceptualising sketches and designs that leave a lasting mark on the jail's walls.
Manish finds solace in working with colours. Notably, Manish shares his knowledge with fellow inmates, who typically engage in various activities such as farming, computer learning, crafting, agriculture and sewing to productively pass their time in jail.
The undertrial has introduced his fellow inmates to diverse art forms, highlighting the effectiveness of wall slogans. He encourages them to try sketching, painting, and mastering techniques like colour combinations and shading.
T
hrough their collaborative efforts, the prison walls are being transformed into lively and dynamic works of art like vibrant murals and hard-hitting slogans like 'stree ki unnati par hi rashtra ki unnati nirbhar hai' (The progress of a nation depends on the progress of women) and 'vyakti apne vicharon ke siwa kutch nahi hai, vo jo sochta hai ban jata hai' (A man is nothing but his thoughts; he becomes what he thinks).
Ajitesh Mishra, superintendent of Kaushambi district jail, told TOI, "Manish, a resident of Charwa, was lodged in Kaushambi district jail three months ago under Posco charges. About a fortnight ago, Manish approached the jail authorities with a unique request — to allow him to transform the prison walls into vibrant and lively spaces. He also requested art supplies, including paint and brushes."
"Inmates are showcasing their creativity by working on various murals and artworks to transform the prison's interiors...
The prison walls are being decorated with vibrant graffiti, featuring sketches of freedom fighters, forest scenes and wildlife. The inmates have also created artwork to beautify the walls, bringing them to life with their creative expressions," Mishra added.
Considering it as a way of expression, Manish is spending five to six hours daily painting the graffiti, a jail official said.
Manish feels painting serves as a great way to disconnect from the outside world, requiring intense focus and effort.
He also appreciates the productive nature of this creative outlet.
"They should feel motivated and become better people after their release," said a senior jail official, adding, "They have seen a drastic change in their personality and their approach after they took up art".
"We think most of them need a platform to channelise their energies in the right direction," said a senior jail authority, adding, "Once these prisoners learn skills in different artwork, they could be able to transform their lives and become self-reliant after release."

The collector also gave instructions to get the vaccine tested if people die despite taking the anti-rabies vaccine. The team of doctors from Khandwa Medical College also conducted health check-ups of the injured. Villagers of Limbai, in anger, set out on foot to meet the Barwani collector on Monday, but officials stopped them at Rajpur, 7 km away. In response, they blocked the Khandwa Vadodara highway in Rajpur. The villagers also reached the forest department office and raised slogans demanding that the unknown animal be caught and compensation of Rs 15 lakh be given. They claimed that three cows also died due to the bite of the unknown animal. Barwani divisional forest officer Ashish Bansod said that the unknown animal is being searched for on a war footing and more staff is being deployed to find it. He said that apart from searching with drones and trap cameras, cages are also being installed for this purpose. He told TOI that the animal could not be traced at the moment, but based on the statements of villagers, considering it to be a jackal, a case has been prepared to give compensation of Rs 8 lakh to the family of each deceased. It is worth mentioning that on May 5 in Limbai village of Rajpur, an unknown animal bit 17 people sleeping outside. Block medical officer of Rajpur, Dr Devendra Romde, told TOI that the medical college team checked Sunil (who died today) and gave an opinion of clear symptoms of rabies. Maharashtra: Online tenant verification in all police stations by month-end
PUNE : Tenants across the state will soon be spared the hassle of visiting police stations for verification when they rent accommodations once the registration department integrates its data with the police network covering all 1,203 police stations by June-end, registration department officials told TOI on Monday. A senior registration department official said, "Technical glitches and software updates have been resolved. The rollout of the new updated software for e-registration of leave and licence for tenants, along with the online tenant verification system, will be in place by June-end." DIG IT Abhaysinh Mohite explained that the upgraded Leave and Licence 2.0 software will be fully integrated with the police CCTNS network. "This will save citizens from physically visiting police stations. We are rolling out the system in phases across the entire state," he said. The department will send tenant information data to the CCTNS system for those who register the leave and licence process through the IGR application. However, those continuing to register on traditional stamp papers—prevalent in rural areas—will still need to visit police stations. "This is currently an issue and landlords should insist on registering on the portal rather than doing it on stamp paper," the official said. This development follows the recent mandates by additional collectors requiring property owners, especially in the rural areas, to submit comprehensive tenant details, including names, addresses, photographs, and references, at local police stations The urgency for streamlined processes was highlighted recently when Mumbai police filed FIRs against property owners in Kurla and Dadar for failing to upload tenant details on the police website, under Section 223 of BNS, which carries up to one year imprisonment. Sachin Shinghavi, Pune president of Association of Real Estate Agents, said the move is a "long-pending demand." He said that the system encourages proper document registration instead of relying on affidavits, creating a win-win situation for citizens, registration, and police departments. "However, they should ensure that there are no glitches and tenants are not made to wait for days before they can download the online registered document," he added. A registration official noted that the new system exemplifies inter-departmental cooperation for citizen safety and efficient data sharing. Over five years, total registered documents reached nearly 50 lakh, demonstrating the scale of the digital transformation. "The system is good and hopefully the delayed rollout will finally be implemented from next month," Meena N, a tenant who will renew her registration next month, said.
