One more dies after animal attack in Barwani, toll reaches 6
Barwani: One more person bitten by a mysterious rabid animal in Barwani district died on Monday, taking the death toll to six in the last 11 days. Angered villagers of Limbai village in Rajpur subdivision and others blocked the highway and demonstrated for the search of the animal and compensation.
District collector Guncha Sanobar said that all five people admitted to the isolation ward of MY Hospital in Indore returned to Limbai against the advice of doctors. "In this, 40-year-old Sunil was being taken to the district hospital when his condition worsened, but he died before reaching there," she said. She added that the remaining affected people are being monitored by a team of medical staff.
Six villagers (four men and two women), aged between 40 to 70 years, died in the last 11 days.
Collector Guncha Sanobar reached Limbai village with revenue, forest, and health officials and met the family members of the injured and deceased, assuring them of all possible help. The collector also gave instructions to get the vaccine tested if people die despite taking the anti-rabies vaccine. The team of doctors from Khandwa Medical College also conducted health check-ups of the injured.
Villagers of Limbai, in anger, set out on foot to meet the Barwani collector on Monday, but officials stopped them at Rajpur, 7 km away.
In response, they blocked the Khandwa Vadodara highway in Rajpur. The villagers also reached the forest department office and raised slogans demanding that the unknown animal be caught and compensation of Rs 15 lakh be given. They claimed that three cows also died due to the bite of the unknown animal.
Barwani divisional forest officer Ashish Bansod said that the unknown animal is being searched for on a war footing and more staff is being deployed to find it.
He said that apart from searching with drones and trap cameras, cages are also being installed for this purpose. He told TOI that the animal could not be traced at the moment, but based on the statements of villagers, considering it to be a jackal, a case has been prepared to give compensation of Rs 8 lakh to the family of each deceased.
It is worth mentioning that on May 5 in Limbai village of Rajpur, an unknown animal bit 17 people sleeping outside.
Block medical officer of Rajpur, Dr Devendra Romde, told TOI that the medical college team checked Sunil (who died today) and gave an opinion of clear symptoms of rabies. Dr Romde said that the fourth anti-rabies injections to 11 remaining persons will be administered on Tuesday (28th day).

Karnataka Govt suspends senior IFS officer R Gokul over stand on forest land donated to HMT Ltd in Bengaluru
The Karnataka Government Wednesday suspended a senior Indian Forest Service officer, R Gokul, for allegedly facilitating the handover of forest land worth nearly Rs 14,000 crore, held by the public sector company Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) in Bengaluru, to third parties, including private entities. The government issued the suspension order stating that 'in exercise of the powers under Rule 3(1) (a) of the All India Service (Discipline & Appeal) Rules, 1969, Sri R. Gokul, IFS, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & Director General, EMPRI, Bengaluru, is placed under suspension with immediate effect, pending inquiry.' The reason for Gokul's suspension has been cited as his actions regarding the 'denotification of lands granted to HMT measuring 443 Acres 6 guntas situated at Peenya Jalahalli Plantation'. According to the government order, an interlocutory application was filed by forest officials before the Supreme Court in 2020 'without obtaining the approval of the then minister-in-charge or sanction from the state cabinet' for permission to denotify 443.6 acres of land granted to HMT at the Peenya Jalahalli Plantation. Initially, the state government issued notices to Sandeep Dave, a retired IAS officer and the former additional chief secretary for Forest, Ecology and Environment; Vijay Kumar Gogi, retired IFS officer and the former principal secretary for Forest, Ecology and Environment; Smitha Bijjur, IFS, ex-principal secretary, Forest, Ecology and Environment and Gokul. The government has reported receiving replies to the notices from three of the four officers (other than Sandeep Dave) but said that Gokul had written to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after receiving his notice 'seeking protection' in an illegal mining case from the 2010 period where he is a key witness against a mafia that was operated by political figures. The IFS officer also did not obtain permission or inform the government when he filed an 'Intervention Application (113311/2025) in the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India against IA (190307/2024 WP (C) 337/1995) filed by the State Government in the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India for withdrawal of the IA (60477/2020 in WP (C) 337/1995) related to the de-notification of lands belonging to HMT Ltd,' said the suspension order. The government order said the conduct of Gokul 'is in violation of Rule 17 of All India Services (Conduct) Rules, 1968, and the State Government is prima facie satisfied that it is necessary' to place him under suspension with immediate effect. Last week, Karnataka Minister for Forest and Environment Eshwar Khandre announced that the government had recommended action against two serving IFS officers, one retired IFS officer, and one retired IAS officer for filing of an application in the Supreme Court 'seeking permission for denotification of HMT forest land worth over Rs. 14,000 crore'. 'This plantation is owned by HMT. It is illegal for the organisation to sell to government departments/organisations and private individuals. However, the fact that forest officials did not make any attempt to recover the land and, without even drawing the attention of the Cabinet, submitted an Interim Application (IA) to the Supreme Court seeking denotification in 2020 is a cause for doubt,' Khandre has said. The controversy pertains to 599 acres of land in a plantation in the Peenya Jalahalli region in North Bengaluru, which was declared a forest in 1896 and was later transferred to HMT in the 1960s to create industrial infrastructure through a donation deed by the district collector. In recent years, large portions of the land given to HMT by the forest department for industrial purposes have been used to facilitate major real estate projects through the connivance of state and central government officials. Over the last year, a dispute arose over the land between the Union Heavy Industries Ministry headed by H D Kumaraswamy, who is looking at monetising the land to resuscitate the fortunes of HMT, and the state forest department, which is trying to recover the HMT land by arguing that it remains a forest land. In November last year, the Karnataka Government issued notices to the forest officials concerned over the filing of the IA in the SC on the HMT forest land. In January this year, the state government ordered that since 281 acres of the 599 acres of land donated to HMT is vacant land 'without any building,' the forest department must take possession of the vacant forest land. Over 200 acres of the HMT land in Bengaluru have been handed over to private players and others, even as HMT Ltd has collapsed in the last four decades. One of the major transfers of land happened between 1999 and 2004 when the Congress was in power, leading to the construction of apartment complexes by some of the big real estate developers of Bengaluru.

NEW DELHI: Karnataka deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar in front of the media on Thursday, speaking for the first time after a stampede outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium left 11 people dead and over 70 injured during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) IPL victory celebrations. The senior Congress leader, visibly emotional, said the tragedy had left him deeply shaken. "We must learn an administrative lesson, let the opposition do politics on dead bodies. I will list how many dead bodies they have done politics on. But it hurts to see the little children. I have seen their pain," he told news agency ANI. Shivakumar had apologised on Wednesday, shortly after the tragedy, acknowledging that the government had underestimated the size of the crowd. "This should not have happened and we never expected such a big crowd. The stadium's capacity is 35,000, but more than 3 lakh people were there. Gates (of the stadium) have been broken. We apologise for this incident. We want to know the facts and give a clear message," he said. He accused the opposition BJP of politicising the event, adding: "BJP is doing politics. We are very sorry for the incident. We will work out a better solution in the future." The Karnataka government has postponed all official events scheduled for Friday, barring the cabinet meeting, as a mark of respect. "Tomorrow, except the cabinet meeting, all programmes have been postponed. No celebrations, including the World Environment Day." Shivakumar added. Compensation announced Chief minister Siddaramaiah, while addressing a separate press conference, announced financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh to the families of those killed and free medical care for the injured. "A major tragedy occurred during the victory celebrations. It happened near the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The government has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the deceased. The government will provide free treatment to the injured," he said. "11 died and 33 were injured in the stampede. This tragedy should not have happened. The government expresses deep sorrow over this incident," he added. The chief minister also confirmed that a magisterial inquiry had been ordered into the incident, with a report expected in 15 days. "I don't want to defend this incident. Our government will not do politics on this. I have ordered a magisterial inquiry and given 15 days' time. People even broke the gates of the stadium. There was a stampede. No one expected such a huge crowd. The stadium has a capacity of only 35,000 people, but 2-3 lakh people came," Siddaramaiah said.

Fake Army recruitment centre busted in Mainpuri; two held for duping youths

AGRA: Mainpuri Police on Wednesday uncovered a fake army and police recruitment centre operating in the Kishani area, arresting two accused—Arvind Kumar Pandey and his associate Sumit—who allegedly duped dozens of youths with false promises of government jobs. The scam came to light after Ashok, a resident of Telangana , filed a complaint stating that he had sent his six sons—Sagar, Chandrashekhar, Srikant, Raviteja, Vijay, and Laxman—for training at the centre in 2024. Each was charged between Rs 2–3 lakh, paid through a mix of online transfers and cash. The centre was run by Pandey, who promised guaranteed placements in the police and armed forces. Ashok said he learned about the centre through a YouTube video in which Pandey appeared dressed in an Army uniform, referring to himself as 'Captain' and offering assured employment. Despite undergoing three months of training, none of Ashok's sons landed a job. When Ashok tried to contact Pandey, he stopped responding and vanished. SP Vinod Kumar said the centre, named 'Indian Police Protection Force Centre,' operated from rented premises and resembled a legitimate training institute. It displayed official-looking paraphernalia such as fake ID cards, uniforms, the Ashoka Pillar emblem, and other items to mislead candidates. The centre conducted physical drills and job-readiness sessions under the guise of pre-recruitment training. However, when candidates failed to secure jobs, Pandey blamed their 'inadequate performance.' Investigations revealed that Pandey had also launched a website and uploaded promotional content online. He used agents in other states to recruit more candidates by circulating false information. Police seized a fake air gun, medical admit cards, forged ID cards showing Pandey in uniform, laptops, letter pads, and other incriminating documents. Sumit, who assisted in preparing the fake paperwork and managed administrative work, was also arrested. Pandey has a prior criminal record and was previously jailed under IPC Section 420 for cheating. The current case has been registered under Section 318(4) of the BNS (cheating and dishonesty). Police said further investigation is underway.
