Man already in jail ordered held for Douglas shooting that injured 8-year-old girl

Chicago Tribune7 days ago
A South Side man was ordered to be held in jail Wednesday for charges related to a late June Douglas shooting in which an 8-year-old girl was injured.
Kenneth J. Williams, 23, who was already in jail custody on a separate gun charge, was ordered detained by Cook County Judge John Hock at the Leighton Criminal Court Building Wednesday afternoon after authorities charged Williams with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery.
The shooting was a result of a verbal altercation between people in two vehicles around 9:45 p.m. on June 24 in the Douglas neighborhood, according to the prosecution's proffer, which states the allegations.
A Nissan was parked at a gas station, with the child sitting in the car's trunk, when a white Chevrolet pulled up, according to prosecutors.
A woman got out of the arriving Chevrolet and accused the Nissan's driver of striking her daughter as a pedestrian, according to the proffer.
The witnesses in the Nissan tried telling the woman they had not struck her daughter and eventually left the gas station, but the woman in the Chevrolet trailed them and continued to follow as they tried to get away from her, according to the proffer.
The Nissan eventually pulled over at 3047 S. State St., near a group of people on the sidewalk that included Williams, who knew the woman in Chevrolet, who also pulled over, authorities said.
After more quarreling between the vehicles and the people on the sidewalk, authorities said Williams pulled out a gun from his waistband and fired four shots at the back of the Nissan, striking the girl, according to the proffer.
The Nissan's driver fled and found an ambulance nearby, which transported the girl to Comer Children's Hospital, from where she was released the same night with no major complications due to a gunshot wound to her left thigh.
At the time of his arrest, Williams was already in jail after he was charged with felony possession of a weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon charge, for which he appeared in court and was detained on July 18, court records showed. He had other felony convictions and charges over the last several years.
Williams was also on pretrial release at the time of his detention for a charge of criminal trespass to vehicles out of Will County, according to court records. Witnesses identified Williams as the shooter, and charged him.
Assistant State's Attorney Joseph Sorrentino said the shooting was 'as dangerous as it gets.'
'Luckily, no one died, but easily this could have been a lot worse,' Sorrentino said. 'There could have been multiple people struck because there were several shots.'
Assistant public defender Zoe Gatzimos argued that the witnesses in the Nissan were facing away from Williams and the rest of the group of people, making it difficult to identify the shooter. There was city POD footage of the entire shooting, but Sorrentino said it was grainy and doesn't show anyone's face.
William's next court date is July 28 in Skokie. Judge Hock also ordered Williams to have no contact with the victim or any of the witnesses.

Local woman killed in two-vehicle Beauregard crash

Special to the American Press A 68-year-old Kinder woman died as the result of a two-vehicle fatality crash on La. 12 at the intersection with U.S. 171 in Beauregard Parish on Thursday. Shortly after noon, Louisiana State Police Troop D began investigating the crash. The preliminary investigation revealed that Mills was driving a 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe on the exit ramp of U.S. 171 approaching La. 12. At the same time, a 2015 Dodge Ram 3500 was westbound on La. 12. For reasons still under investigation, the Chevrolet failed to yield at a stop sign with the intersection of La. 12, entered the path of the approaching Ram, and was struck on the driver's side. Mills sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. A passenger in the Chevrolet suffered serious injuries and was transported to an out-of-area hospital for treatment. The driver of the Ram sustained minor injuries, while two additional passengers were uninjured. All occupants involved in the crash were restrained. Standard toxicology samples were collected from both drivers and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. Troopers wish to remind motorists to always remain vigilant when approaching and entering intersections. Always come to a complete stop where required, scan for oncoming traffic in all directions, and proceed only when it is safe to do so. Obeying traffic signals and right-of-way rules and avoiding distractions are critical steps in preventing serious crashes and saving lives.

Suspect faces several charges after Seagoville police chase, attempt to steal patrol car and officer assault, officials say

A man, who police said is a "documented criminal street gang member," is facing several charges after a police and foot chase and dragging an officer in an attempt to steal a patrol car, the Seagoville Police Department said. The brazen crimes, which were captured on bodycam and dashcam videos, began just after 7 p.m. Sunday, July 27. Police said Brandon Roy Boothe, 36, was identified driving a Chevrolet pickup that was reported stolen. A Seagoville officer attempted to stop Boothe, but he fled, and a pursuit began on Seagoville Road to IH-20. The officer terminated the pursuit after Boothe entered eastbound IH-20 driving the wrong way, Seagoville PD said in a news release. Another responding officer spotted Boothe traveling on eastbound on the service road of IH-20, approaching Beltline Road in Southeast Dallas, and engaged in a police pursuit. In his attempt to flee a second time, Boothe reportedly drove across a grassy area and collided with another vehicle at a low speed, causing both vehicles to come to a stop near the intersection at Beltline Road, police said. Boothe then ran from the stolen pickup with a Seagoville officer chasing him. Police said that the officer attempted to deploy a Taser against Boothe but was unsuccessful. During the chase, Boothe circled back and hopped inside the office's patrol car and as he was closing the driver's side door, the officer caught up to him and lunged into the car to try to prevent Boothe from driving away, according to the news release. Boothe and the officer got into a fight inside the patrol car, in which Boothe at one point was able to get the car in gear and drove forward, striking the stolen pickup. Boothe then reportedly reversed and accelerated as the officer was being dragged outside the patrol car, the news release said. The struggle between the officer and Boothe continued for a few minutes as Boothe kept attempting to flee in the car, before another Seagoville officer caught up to the scene and subdued Boothe with a Taser. Seagoville PD said Boothe was then arrested and transported to the hospital. After being medically cleared, Boothe was transported and booked into the Dallas County jail. He has been charged with robbery, aggravated assault against a public servant, unauthorized use of a vehicle, evading arrest or detention with a vehicle and two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. Seagoville PD said the officer who struggled with Boothe suffered from minor facial injuries and minor leg injuries from being dragged outside the patrol vehicle. The officer was treated for his injuries at the scene. Seagoville PD said at the time of his arrest, Boothe, who has an extensive criminal history as a street gang member, had an active warrant for a parole violation issued by the Texas Department of Corrections. He had two handguns and ammunition inside the stolen pickup.

Commissioner Martin Moore launches campaign for Buncombe County district attorney

ASHEVILLE – Buncombe County Commissioner Martin Moore has launched a bid to become the county's next district attorney, a role currently held by Todd Williams, a fellow Democrat who has said he would prefer not to run for reelection. Moore, a former public defender and now attorney and mediator in private practice, made the announcement in a July 29 news release. 'If elected D.A., my emphasis will be on prosecuting cases of domestic violence and criminal cases involving gun crimes,' Moore said in the release. 'Our community is most severely impacted by these types of violent crimes and the court calendar will reflect these priorities under my leadership.' Moore added that misdemeanor cannabis charges would be his office's 'lowest priority.' Moore, 37, was elected to a four-year term on the County Commission in 2022 and is now the board's vice-chair. He represents District 2. In 2024, Moore ran for a seat on the state's Court of Appeals, losing to Republican Christopher Freeman in the November general election. Williams, 55, was first elected district attorney in 2014 and is currently serving his third term. He said he would not run for reelection should a qualified candidate step forward, the Citizen Times previously reported. Williams told the Citizen Times on July 29 that he believes Moore to be qualified for the post but said he will not make a final decision on running for a fourth term until closer to the end of the official candidate filing period, which is in December. Still, Moore, a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill and UNC School of Law, has the backing of several local elected leaders. According to his campaign's July 29 new release, state Reps. Eric Ager, Lindsay Prather and Brian Turner, are all backing Moore, as are state Sen. Julie Mayfield, Register of Deeds Drew Reisinger, former Buncombe County Commissioner Jasmine Beach-Ferrara, and current commissioners Al Whitesides, Parker Sloan, Drew Ball and Board Chair Amanda Edwards.
