Sharda panel probes BDS student death
The student from Gurugram, was found dead on Friday evening in her room—1209(C), on the 12th floor of Mandela Hostel—in Greater Noida's Knowledge Park. A suicide note recovered from the scene reportedly contained allegations against certain college professors.
'We were informed on Thursday that the internal five-member committee formed to investigate the BDS student's suicide had recorded the statements of assistant professor Shairy Vashist and associate professor Mahinder Singh Chouhan at Luksar Jail,' said Greater Noida assistant commissioner of police (ACP) BS Vir Singh.
'The committee will submit its report to the vice chancellor on Friday, after which we will receive a copy to proceed further,' said ACP Singh.
However, the statements of the deceased's family members are yet to be recorded. An official from the university, on condition of anonymity, said, 'We have contacted the deceased's parents multiple times, but they are not cooperating. We also requested them to record their statements virtually or send them in written format, but they did not do so.'
Meanwhile, the deceased's father denied that anyone from the university had approached them yet.
On Thursday, the police also opened the seal placed at the gate of the Dental School. 'The police have removed the seal placed at the gate of the Dental School. The premise is to be opened again for general uses. Since, police have not indicated any areas that may be important from the point of view of ongoing investigation in the Dental College, as a safety precaution, all areas in the students' locker room, administrative office, labs, faculty cabins and all other related areas be kept locked, safe and unchanged,' reads the notice issued by dean of Dental School Dr. Sukhdeep Singh.
However, the deceased's father said, 'They opened the seal without our consent and there is proof of practicals that needs to be sealed.'
The deceased was upset after arrested professors refused to sign the manual of dental material after they alleged that their signatures were forged by her on the manual. The student's father was also called on June 14 regarding the forged signature issue. However, the deceased denied the allegation in front of dean and her father. BDS students present manuals, a brief of the assignments during the practical exams.
Sharda University public relations officer Dr. Ajit Kumar said, 'The committee has observed some changes that need to be done. They (the committee) will inform all about new reforms, changes, and suggestions in the final report. Following this, we will apply these changes with immediate effect.'
Dental classes were suspended for four days but as the department was unsealed on Thursday, the college declared that annual exam practicals and clinicals will start on Friday, except for the subjects taught by arrested professors Shairy Vashist and Mahinder Singh Chouhan (Dental Material) and suspended professors Surabhi Duggal and Anurag Hasti (Pre-Clinical Prosthodontics, PCP), said a student, adding that the written exams for BDS will be postponed from July 22 to July 28.
Notably, five faculty members, including Dean of Dental School Dr. M. Siddharth and four other professors, including those arrested, were suspended following the suicide of a BDS student. The university spokesperson said that they will remain suspended until the investigation against them is underway.

Gurugram cries for help: Househelps, sanitation workers ‘vanish' without notice; social media reacts, ‘What's going on?'
A Reddit user was left in shock after the maid and the cook had disappeared suddenly from Gurugram. 'What's going on?' the user asked. 'Since Sunday there is a issue we all are facing in Ardee City, the maids and cooks are vanished suddenly and their cells are not reachable as well. The garbage collection guy is not coming though,' add the user while wondering what could have happened. 'It's all over Gurgaon. The immigration check for the people specifically domestic helps and sanitation workers is making them flee Gurgaon,' replied one Reddit user. 'Not flee, they're being put in detention centres in Manesar,' countered another. Another posted, 'My didi cried to me today saying that they have been forcefully picking people up despite them showing their papers that they are from India. And, then they've been beating them up and also switching their phones off.' 'Police have cracked down on some of the areas where a lot of Bengali helpers live and detained some claiming they are Bangladeshi. Few others have fleed to their villages out of fear of mistreatment and forced nabbing by police,' came from another. Hundreds of domestic workers and sanitation staff have left Gurugram due to fear of police checks and detention. This sudden exit has severely disrupted waste collection. Garbage has been piling up on streets while door-to-door waste collection systems have literally collapsed. According to the Hindustan Times, areas like Sector 103, Palam Vihar, Sector 56, 57 and Sector 29 are now facing waste problems. Residents are hiring tractor-trolleys without proper waste separation or trained workers. It is causing random dumping that risks turning into a serious health crisis. The immigration drive primarily targets suspected undocumented migrants, mostly from Bangladesh and Myanmar. About 250 people remain held in detention centres set up in four community halls in Gurgaon. Migrant workers say Bengali-speaking people are being unfairly targeted during verification checks. Around 200 migrants from Sector 58 have already left for Assam. Locals accuse police of randomly arresting and assaulting their family members. The Times of India spoke to Saminul Islam from Assam. He has lived in Gurgaon for 15 years with his family. "Suddenly, we are being labelled as illegal Bangladeshis. Several of our relatives have been detained in community centres even though they possess identity proofs of their citizenship. We are Indians, not criminals," TOI quoted Saminul as saying.

Road Blocked, Protest Rally Held As Udaipur's Medical College Faces Outrage Over Student Suicide
Last Updated: The students of the college carried out massive protest on the campus and also blocked a road outside, demanding action against the faculty members mentioned on the suicide note. A medical student allegedly took her own life in her hostel room in a private medical college in Rajasthan's Udaipur, officials said on Friday. The incident took place on Thursday night when a final-year BDS student from Jammu and Kashmir, Sweta Singh, was found hanging in her room. Her roommate allegedly discovered her hanging, after which she alerted the hostel authorities, and the police were called. The cops found a suicide note at the spot where the student allegedly accused the faculty of mentally harassing students and not conducting examinations on time, the officials said. As the incident came to light, the students carried out a protest march at the college and blocked a road outside, as they demanded action against the teachers who were mentioned in Sweta's note. The college director held talks with the students and assured them of taking strict action against those faculty members. 'The matter is being investigated by the police, and they will take appropriate action based on their findings. The college management is also addressing the situation and will terminate the staff members involved," the director told reporters, news agency PTI reported. SHO Sukher Police Station Ravindra Charan said that the student's body was shifted to a mortuary, and a postmortem will be conducted after the arrival of her family members.
