Robert Benton, Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Kramer Vs Kramer, dies at 92

His son John said he died Sunday at his home in Manhattan of 'natural causes'.
During a 40-year screen career, the Texas native received six Oscar nominations and won three times: for writing and directing Kramer Vs Kramer and for writing Places In The Heart.
He was widely appreciated by actors as attentive and trusting, and directed Oscar-winning performances by Dustin Hoffman, Meryl Streep and Sally Field.

Although severe dyslexia left him unable to read more than a few pages at a time as a child, he wrote and directed film adaptations of novels by Philip Roth, EL Doctorow and Richard Russo, among others.
Benton was an art director for Esquire magazine in the early 1960s when a love for French New Wave movies and old gangster stories inspired him and Esquire editor David Newman to draft a treatment about the lives of Depression-era robbers Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker, imagining them as prototypes for 1960s rebels.
The project took years to complete as Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard were among the directors who turned them down before Warren Beatty agreed to produce and star in the movie.
Bonnie and Clyde, directed by Arthur Penn and starring Beatty and Faye Dunaway, overcame initial critical resistance in 1967 to the film's shocking violence and became one of the touchstones of 1960s culture and the start of a more open and creative era in Hollywood.
The original story by Benton and Newman was even more daring: they had made Clyde Barrow bisexual and involved in a three-way relationship with Bonnie and their male getaway driver.
Beatty and Penn resisted and Barrow was instead portrayed as impotent, with an uncredited Robert Towne making numerous other changes to the script.

'I honestly don't know who the 'auteur' of Bonnie And Clyde was,' Benton later told Mark Harris, author of Pictures At A Revolution, a book about Bonnie And Clyde and four other movies from 1967.
Over the following decade, none of Benton's films approached the impact of Bonnie And Clyde, although he continued to have critical and commercial success.
His writing credits included Superman and What's Up, Doc? He directed and co-wrote such well-reviewed works as Bad Company, a revisionist western featuring Jeff Bridges, and The Late Show, a melancholy comedy for which his screenplay received an Oscar nomination.
His career soared in 1979 with his adaptation of the Avery Corman novel Kramer Vs Kramer, about a self-absorbed advertising executive who becomes a loving parent to his young son after his wife walks out, only to have her return and ask for custody.
Starring Hoffman and Streep, the movie was praised as a perceptive, emotional portrait of changing family roles and expectations and won five Academy Awards, including best picture.
Hoffman, disenchanted at the time with the film business, cited the movie and Benson's direction for reviving his love for movie acting.

Five years later, Benton was back in the Oscars race with a more personal film, Places In The Heart, in which he drew on family stories and childhood memories for his 1930s-set drama starring Field as a mother of two in Texas who fights to hold on to her land after her husband is killed.
'I think that when I saw it all strung together, I was surprised at what a romantic view I had of the past,' Benton told the Associated Press in 1984, adding that the movie was in part a tribute to his mother, who had died shortly before the release of Kramer Vs Kramer.
Benton was born in Waxahachie, Texas, outside Dallas. He owed his early love for movies to his father, telephone company employee Ellery Douglass Benton who, instead of asking about homework, would take his family to the picture shows.
The elder Benton would also share memories of attending the funerals of outlaws Barrow and Parker, Texas natives who grew up in the Dallas area.
Robert Benton studied at the University of Texas and Columbia University, then served in the US Army from 1954 until 1956.
While at Esquire, he helped start the magazine's long-standing Dubious Achievement Award and dated Gloria Steinem, then on staff at the humour magazine Help! He married artist Sallie Rendigs in 1964. They had one son.
Between hits, Benton often endured long dry spells. His latter films included such disappointments as the thrillers Billy Bathgate, The Human Stain and Twilight.
He had much more success with Nobody's Fool, a wry comedy released in 1994 and starring Paul Newman, in his last Oscar-nominated performance, as a small-town troublemaker in upstate New York.
Benton, whose film was based on Russo's novel, was nominated for best adapted screenplay.

The surprising parts of Braveheart that were ACCURATE: From William Wallace's execution to Robert the Bruce becoming King of Scotland... after Brian Cox brands film 'b******s'

Ever since its release in 1995, Braveheart has been a whipping boy for scholars. All of its historical inaccuracies - ranging from Mel Gibson 's blue painted face to its garbled chronology - have been gleefully pointed out. And further fuel was poured on the fire this week by one of the film's stars, Brian Cox, who said the Oscar-winning production was 'b******s'. Speaking at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, Cox added that the film is a 'f***ing lie, the whole thing', and added he only agreed to portray Wallace's fictional uncle Argyle, after Gibson pleaded with him. But the tale of Scotland's push for 'freeeeeeedom!' against the tyrannical English did get a few things right. The Scots were defeated at the Battle of Falkirk One of the many fighting scenes in the film depicts 1298 Battle of Falkirk, which ended with Scottish defeat. Troops led by Wallace fought valiantly but ultimately succumbed to the strength of the English army headed by King Edward I. The version of the battle in Braveheart accurately depicts the desertion of the Scottish cavalry as defeat loomed. Around 2,000 men on each side were killed, though the English force triumphed in part because of its overwhelming numerical superiority. William Wallace was betrayed In Braveheart, Wallace is betrayed by noblemen Mornay and Lochlan in the lead-up to the Battle of Falkirk. Gibson's character goes on to kill the pair as revenge for their treachery. Although Mornay and Lochlan were Hollywood inventions, Wallace really was betrayed. The treachery of Scottish nobleman John Mnteith - who was not depicted in Braveheart - led to his capture near Glasgow in 1305. William Wallace was gruesomely executed One of the final scenes in Braveheart depicts Wallace's gruesome execution. The Scot was hanged, drawn and quartered at Smithfield in London. The killing method involved hanging someone until they were nearly dead and then cutting off their genitals and disembowelling them while they were still alive. Gibson opted not to depict Wallace's death scene in graphic detail, and instead focused on his face as he was tortured and then cried out his message of defiance. Sticklers will have pointed out that Wallace would have been in no fit state to shout out anything after being subjected to such horrendous disfigurement. The English were defeated at Bannockburn The final scenes of Gibson's film depict the Scottish victory at the Battle of Bannockburn. The clash, which took place in June 1314, saw Robert the Bruce's Scots defeat English troops led by Edward II. Robert's victory at Bannockburn put paid to Edward's plans to conquer Scotland. In Braveheart, the ramshackle Scots charge at their enemies as the film ends by showing Wallace's sword - having been thrown by Argyle - sticking out of the ground and wavering in the wind. Robert the Bruce did become King of Scotland Braveheart's depiction of Robert the Bruce leading his men into battle at Bannockburn comes after he has been crowned as Scotland's king. Robert became King of the Scots at Scone, near Perth, in 1306. After the formal inauguration, he agreed to be crowned for a second time by the Isabella MacDuff, the Countess of Buchan. That moment is immortalised in a tableau on display at Edinburgh Castle. Robert reigned until his death in 1329, when he was succeeded by his son, King David II.

Weinstein could face trial for a third time on rape charge

Harvey Weinstein is set to face his third trial in New York City in a sexual assault case, after the jury failed to reach a verdict on a rape charge. Weinstein, 73, was convicted in June of forcing oral sex on TV and movie production assistant and producer Miriam Haley in 2006. At the same time, the jury acquitted him of forcing oral sex on another woman, one-time model Kaja Sokola, but couldn't decide on a charge that he raped hairstylist and actor Jessica Mann in 2013. He is due to be sentenced on September 30 for the Haley conviction, but only if the new trial relating to the Mann charges does not go ahead. If there is a retrial, the judge wants it to happen in the next few months. Prosecutors and Weinstein's lawyers vowed on Wednesday that they were willing to square off at yet another trial, which would be his third in New York and fourth overall. But Weinstein's lawyers aren't ruling out the possibility of reaching a deal to resolve the case, though they also emphasise he's not willing to plead guilty to raping Mann, and they are pressing prosecutors simply to abandon that charge. Harvey Weinstein's lawyers have said they are ready to fight the trial. / Credit: AP For the charge relating to Mann, any conviction is punishable by up to four years in prison, less than Weinstein has already served, and far less than the potential 25 years he faces for his conviction related to Haley. At Weinstein's first trial in 2020, jurors convicted him of raping Mann and forcing oral sex on Haley. Then an appeals court overturned those convictions in 2024 and sent the case back for retrial because of legal issues involving other women's testimony. This spring, a new jury convicted him again of sexually assaulting Haley and acquitted him of doing the same to another woman who wasn't part of the first trial. But amid fractious deliberations, the majority-female jury found themselves stuck on the charge related to Mann. Mann has testified that she also had a consensual, on-and-off relationship with the then-married Weinstein, but that she told him 'I don't want to do this' as he cornered her in the hotel room. She said he persevered with advances and demands until she 'just gave up'. If an autumn trial happens, it would likely put Weinstein's high-profile #MeToo case back in court as Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is in the final stage of his reelection bid. Bragg, a first-term Democrat who made prosecuting sex crimes cases a priority, has expressed satisfaction with Weinstein's conviction on a criminal sex act charge related to Haley. Bragg has said Mann deserves a verdict on her part of the case. Weinstein lawyer Arthur Aidala told reporters outside court that, in his view, it's up to prosecutors to resolve the rape charge, either by dropping it and clearing the way for sentencing, or by promptly taking it to trial again. Weinstein sat in court in a wheelchair while wearing a blue suit and black-rimmed glasses. The Pulp Fiction and Shakespeare in Love producer is committed to fighting the rape charge at another trial, Aidala said, though the lawyer added: 'I've been doing this long enough to say never say never.' Weinstein has also been convicted of sex crimes in California; he's appealing that verdict. He denies all of the allegations against him.
