Punjab government issues public advisory amid spike in COVID-19 cases
Amid a spike in COVID-19 cases, the Punjab Government has issued a public advisory mandating elderly, pregnant woman, immunocompromised and people with health issues to wear mask in crowded or closed places. The advisory also insisted health care staff to wear masks and follow COVID protocols.
The advisory issued on Friday says, "Due to slight rise in COVID-19 cases in some parts of the country, a precautionary advisory is being issued. Thought the situation in the state of Punjab is under control and the health system is fully prepared, still, citizens are advised to follow basic safety measures to help prevent the spread of disease.''
Issuing the Dos, the advisory noted: 'Individuals should cover their mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing—using a handkerchief, tissue, or the inside of the elbow. In case of symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty in breathing, it is advised to wear a mask and consult a doctor immediately.
Listing the don'ts the advisory advised to avoid crowded or poorly ventilated places, especially if you have health problems and do not touch your face without washing hands, do not spit in public and avoid self-medication for respiratory symptoms.
The advisory follows a noticeable surge in infections across the state, particularly in Ludhiana, which has emerged as the current hotspot.
Two persons, one a 69-year-old woman, who was undergoing treatment at PGIMER in Chandigarh and another, a 39-year-old man, who was admitted to Government Medical College Hospital, Sector 32 of Chandigarh succumbed to the infection. Both were natives of Ludhiana.
According to the Punjab Health Department, the active COVID-19 cases in the state has risen from just 12 a week ago to over 35, touching 60 this year.
The has been a steep rise seen in Ludhiana, which has reported 23 new cases, attributed in part to ongoing political gatherings due to the Ludhiana (West) assembly by-poll as political leaders of various parties and the party workers are busy with campaign works
Sources said that both the pre-existing medical conditions and the recent travel history, have made the situation more vulnerable to complications.

"Recorded 57 active COVID-19 cases as of today", says Sikkim Health Minister GT Dhungel

'We are seeing 30-35 cases of COVID every day in the state. We have sufficient stock of medicines,' he said. Dr Sharma added that the deceased patient also suffered from tuberculosis and that the state has adequate supplies of medicines and is closely monitoring the situation. In Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, authorities at Gajra Raja Medical College have reported multiple COVID-19 cases among medical staff, including junior doctors. Dr RKS Dhakad, the institution's dean, stated that 6 to 7 junior doctors have tested positive but reassured that all cases are mild and under observation. 'Several tests have returned positive, including some junior doctors. The situation is not serious. Guidelines have already been issued,' Dr Dhakad told reporters. IISER Pune team develops 20-min Covid, Zika test that doesn't need lab for results
1 2 3 Pune: A team of researchers from IISER, Pune, have developed a method to enhance sensitivity of RNA "biosensors", which, when mixed with viral samples of Covid or Zika, can produce a colour signal to indicate or rule out infection, within 20 minutes. The team said the boosting method can be used to create low-cost diagnostic devices that can be quickly transported to regions where there are few labs, personnel or specialized equipment to screen populations. Mass testing was a challenge during the Covid pandemic when scores of districts — especially during 2021's second wave — reported severe shortages of RT-PCR kits, considered the "gold-standard" for reliable Covid diagnoses. "But RT-PCR machines were not readily available and were centrally located," said Chaitanya Athale, who was part of the IISER team that developed the new method. "Plus, you needed someone to collect samples, run it on the machines and then interpret the results. That's when we saw the need for a low-cost and decentralized test that can be deployed in areas without advanced infrastructure," Athale said. The IISER team developed a modified synthetic RNA sequence known as a 'toehold switch' in the lab, which reacts when it comes in contact with viral RNA to change colour —visible to the naked eye — on a small paper disc. With advances in technology, the team was able to reach detection limits of one picomolar (10 raised to -12). Picomolar is a unit of concentration commonly used to quantify a certain substance in a solution. "PCR, by comparison, is much more sensitive, but this method can be used by a minimally trained technician with test results landing in about 20 minutes," Athale said. RT-PCR test results may take a day or two to show, but the time also depends on how burdened a lab is. Currently, IISER's prototype test works only for Covid and Zika swab samples. A sample dropped onto two discs that will light up accordingly — one, both, or neither — depending on what's present. The test showed consistent results in IISER's lab in Pune and Chile, where partner scientists helped to develop the test. The Pune researchers said regulatory approvals and funding would be needed to take the test to clinics, where it can be tested further. "We've exhausted our grants, but we have manpower. Essentially, we have the people and hope to get the support," Athale said. Others who were part of the test's development team were Tanvi Kale and Rudvi Pednekar. The team's study published in ACS Synthetic Biology, was in collaboration with research teams of Dr Keith Pardee (University of Toronto, Canada) and Dr Fernán Federici (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Chile). 2 covid patients with severe comorbidities die in city
Nagpur: The death of two patients with severe comorbidities from Nagpur were officially attributed to Covid-19 on Saturday. Both victims were males — a 56-year-old patient, who was suffering from diabetes and hypertension, and a 32-year-old cancer patient with anaemia. With the test results showing them to be positive, the deaths were added to the state's Covid-19 toll. According to the state health department, Maharashtra reported 53 new Covid cases on Saturday. The highest number of cases were from Mumbai (24), followed by Pune city (11), Thane city (5), Pimpri-Chinchwad (3), Sangli district (2), Pune district (2), Sangli city (2), Navi Mumbai (1), and Raigad (1). Maharashtra currently has 578 active Covid-19 cases, of which five are in Nagpur. All active cases in the district are reportedly mild. The state continues its routine surveillance of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (Sari). As per protocol, 5% of ILI cases and all Sari cases are being tested for Covid. All positive samples are being forwarded for whole genome sequencing to monitor any changes in the virus. "ILI and Sari surveillance is being actively conducted in the state. There is a gradual but definite rise in Covid cases in Maharashtra. However, the symptoms remain mild and testing and treatment services are readily available through public health facilities.
