Families of migrant workers torn between hope, despair
2
Malda: In some homes, there's despair. In others, relief. A sense of dread hangs over families in Malda whose relatives have gone to work in other states. Jiyem Sk has been waiting for his son Amir to return from Bangladesh for a week.
A migrant worker himself, Jiyem was in Bihar when he learned that his son had been hauled up and sent to Bangladesh on suspicion that he was an illegal immigrant.
Amir had gone to Rajasthan to work at a construction site in April. Local cops detained him. And even though he had his Aadhaar with him and his family in Malda sent more documents, the local police refused to believe Amir was a citizen. He was first taken to a police station.
Then to jail. On July 22, a video surfaced in which Amir revealed that he was in Bangladesh's Ghumra. When the video reached his family, they approached local authorities in Bengal seeking help for his safe return.
On Saturday, the Kaliachak BDO and police, along with other officials, visited Jiyem's house at Jalalpur and assured him they would make all possible efforts to ensure Amir's return. Sources at Ghumra claimed he was taken to the local police station from his shelter.

In other homes, there was relief amid reports of detained workers being released in Haryana, Delhi and other parts of the country.
On July 24, there was a complaint that seven workers of Raninagar under Harishchandrapur police station were detained by Gurgaon police. They were identified as Ajmal Hossain, Usman Ali, Lokman Ali, Manirul Islam, Sadikul Haque, Prakash Das and Abhijit Das, who were working as sweepers in Gurgaon.
On receiving the information, communication was established with the SHO of the Gurgaon police station concerned, both via telephone and email. Gurgaon police sent a formal verification request regarding the identity and nationality of the detained individuals. Subsequently, a thorough verification was conducted, and a detailed report with supporting testimonials was forwarded to the Faridabad commissioner of police, through the office of the Malda SP.
Following discussions throughout the day, all seven were released on Sunday evening.

Grocery store owner held for impersonating Madhya Pradesh minister, influencing Etawah SSP
A grocery store owner has been arrested for impersonating a cabinet minister from Madhya Pradesh and trying to influence the senior superintendent of police (SSP) Etawah in connection with an ongoing criminal case. The accused also attempted to have the local station in-charge removed. (FOR REPRESENTATION) The accused, identified as Ankit Singh Parihar, a resident of Sahson Pirauli Garhia, allegedly impersonated Madhya Pradesh energy minister Pradyumna Singh Tomar and repeatedly called the SSP's official number, seeking favourable action in a case registered at Sahson police station involving his brother Lokendra Singh alias Shivam. He also attempted to have the local station in-charge removed. SSP Brijesh Kumar Srivastava stated that after receiving suspicious calls over two consecutive days, technical surveillance was initiated, which traced the caller's location near the district magistrate's residence. The suspicions were further confirmed when Ankit Singh Parihar, along with his mother and brother, visited the SSP's office to lobby for the case. He was subsequently apprehended near Lion Safari. In a revealing detail, the accused had saved his phone number under the name of energy minister Pradyumna Singh Tomar on the Truecaller app, even using the minister's photograph, in an attempt to make his calls appear authentic. A mobile phone recovered from the accused contained multiple images of Aadhaar card and other identity documents, indicating possible involvement in cyber-related offences. During interrogation, Parihar confessed to impersonating the minister in an attempt to protect his brother, who is an accused in a kidnapping case. Police also discovered forged identity cards of the UP police and fake credentials of the purported minister on the accused's mobile phone. In a startling revelation, officials disclosed that the accused had previously contacted deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak while posing as the minister, prompting the deputy CM to follow up with the SSP. In 2018-19, Parihar had reportedly uploaded photographs of himself wearing a sub-inspector's uniform as his Instagram profile picture, which led to a case being registered against him in Gwalior's Maharajpur police station. Parihar, who has a known criminal history, has been remanded to judicial custody.
