Girls star says she is 'filled with rage' about toxic mumfluencers and says they are 'creating unreasonable expectations' of parenthood
Allison Williams says she is 'filled with rage' over toxic mumfluencers and claims they are 'creating unreasonable expectations' for mothers.
The Girls actress, 37, who is currently in New York City, described the aspirational and unobtainable 'mum content' seen on the likes of Instagram and TikTok as 'poisonous'.
Allison recently launched her new podcast Landlines with her two friends Hope Kremer, an early childhood educator, and Jaymie Oppenheim, a therapist, where they discuss parenting.
One episode centres around 'mum guilt' which is the the guilt and shame that some mothers feel when they don't live up to their own or others' expectations in their role as a parent.
Speaking to the Guardian about the unrealistic standards of being a mother on social media, the M3GAN star said: 'I think it's poisonous [and] it really only exists to make people feel bad about themselves, maybe under the guise of wanting to motivate people, but the impact is so painful.'
Allison - who shares three-year-old son Arlo with her fiancé Alexander Dreymon - admitted that she would find it hard to cope without the help of her hands-on nanny.
She added: 'I would be in a puddle on the ground if we didn't have the nanny that we have, who is the reason my husband is shooting in London right now and I'm [in New York].'
'None of this is possible without her, and we're so grateful. I'm just like, 'show your work. Show me a clock. Like, what day was this filmed?' She is laughing, but she is on a roll. I cannot stand artifice about creating an expectation of what someone should be able to achieve that is totally unreasonable. Who is that helping?'
'Mum guilt' has affected other celebrities such as Kate Winslet, Helen Flanagan and Katherine Ryan, who have spoken about it openly.
In March last year, Helen Flanagan revealed she suffered a psychotic breakdown at the beginning of the year after splitting from her ex of 13 years, Scott Sinclair.
The former Coronation Street star, 33, took to Instagram on Sunday to share that she feels like a 'horrible mummy' when she is away from her kids - Matilda, nine, Delilah, six, and son Charlie, four - when they spend time with their father Scott.
She on her Instagram: 'Not seen my babies for 11 days as they were in Dubai with their daddy. I feel such a horrible mummy for not seeing them and guilty but I think it's important for them to have a nice time with their daddy.
'I suppose mum guilt never goes no matter what you do. They went on holiday with their lovely nanna too which helps me as I get lots of pictures of them looking really happy.'
Kate Winslet said had to accept that she couldn't do it all in order to achieve happiness.
Speaking to Harper's Bazaar UK last year, she explained: 'As women, we try and keep up with the pace of our lives and we get frustrated if we haven't managed to fit in doing some exercise or walking the dog for two hours or being there for every single sports day matches, drop off and pick up at school.
'I'm going easy on myself knowing I simply can't achieve all of those things – that's becoming increasingly important to me.'
Comedian Katherine Ryan said she struggled with 'mum guilt' after leaving her children at home with her husband Bobby Kootstra while she was on tour.
She said: 'There is guilt I think about whatever type of working mother you decide to be. I'm not sure if dads have the same guilt. I haven't heard a lot about dad guilt, but maybe it's a thing.'
Elsewhere in Allison's chat with the Guardian, she also opened up about the criticism that nepo babies have been receiving recently.
The daughter of former NBC News and MSNBC anchor Brian Williams and TV producer Jane Gillan Stoddard admitted that her parents' connections meant that she could pursue a career in acting 'without being worried that I wasn't going to be able to feed myself'.
Growing up, Allison was often around big names such as Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, as they were family friends.
When she was still in high school, she managed to get a summer job as a production assistant on Robert Altman's A Prairie Home Companion which starry cast included Meryl Streep.
She described these experiences as giving her a 'leg up' in the industry as she found it easier to learn about how a set works.
But there has been much mixed reaction to nepo babies, with some actors wanting their children to make a name for themselves.
Ryan Thomas insisted that his 'nepo baby' daughter Scarlett is 'not getting a free ride' after she was tipped for a £2million payday.
The actor, 40, shares his daughter with Coronation Street star Tina O'Brien, 41, but her celebrity connections don't end there - she also counts Love Island's Scott Thomas and Emmerdale's Adam Thomas among her famous relatives.
Scarlett is starring on BBC's Waterloo Road and is slowly racking up thousands of followers on social media.
But speaking in an interview with The Sun, Adam said: 'Everyone thinks she gets a lift up from family, getting on Waterloo Road.
'But she worked damn hard to get that job, and people need to recognise that she's a talented girl – she's up against other people and she's not getting a free ride.'
Dakota Johnson - the daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith - dubbed the scrutiny of nepo babies 'incredibly annoying and boring'.

Kelly Osbourne showcases her slender frame in a chic blue floral print dress as she attends Boodles Tennis event
Kelly Osbourne showcased her slender frame in a chic blue floral-print dress as she attended day three of the prestigious Boodles Tennis at Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire on Thursday. The TV personality, 40, who is the daughter of rock legend Ozzy and TV star Sharon, exuded elegance in the stylish ensemble, which featured a halterneck neckline, bow cut-outs at the bust, and a flowing skirt. Striking a pose for the cameras, Kelly added height with a pair of black strappy open-toe heels. She completed the look with diamond earrings and a tennis-inspired diamond bracelet. Held annually at the luxurious Stoke Park, the Boodles Tennis event offers a rare opportunity to see top-ranked players compete in an intimate and exclusive atmosphere. Kelly's outing comes after she shared a snap of herself earlier this year looking dramatically different, reigniting speculation that she's had plastic surgery. The star took to Instagram to post a couple of glamorous shots after getting her hair and makeup done, with her face looking smoother and more chiselled than ever. Captioning the photos, Kelly revealed she'd been all glammed up for her plans to be cancelled at the last minute, lamenting: 'Sat through glam only to find that my day had been cancelled. #alldressedupandnowheretogo'. However, her followers were distracted by her noticeably slimmer and tauter appearance, which highlighted her sharper jawline, voluptuous lips, and lifted brows. They raced to the comments to admit they could barely recognise the star and accused her of getting heavy cosmetic work done that had made her look as though she'd had a 'full head transplant'. They commented: 'Is Kelly Osborne in the room with us?'; 'WHO IS THAT?? Wft....'; 'Gifted a new head for Christmas….'; 'totally different head'. 'Who's face is that?'; 'Full head transplant'; 'Lots of money and a good plastic surgeon and we can all be this beautiful'. 'Wow amazing what tons of plastic surgery, ozempic and money can do'; 'Is this the same Kelly Osbourne or..'; 'New face, who dis?' 'Where is Kelly?'; 'can't imagine how many surgeries, fillers, botox injections, skin treatments, etc. were involved in this transformation. When you no longer look anything like yourself, what exactly did you accomplish?' Held annually at the luxurious Stoke Park, the Boodles Tennis event offers a rare opportunity to see top-ranked players compete in an intimate and exclusive atmosphere It comes after Kelly's fans voiced their dismay after she shared a new snap of herself looking dramatically different, with her face looking smoother and more chiselled than ever reigniting speculation that she's had plastic surgery 'Teenage Kelly would not be happy about this'; 'What in the millions dollars worth of plastic surgery is this'; 'Is she AI?!' Kelly has undergone many changes in her appearance over the years. In 2020, she revealed that she had quietly undergone gastric sleeve surgery two years before, leading to a jaw-dropping 85lb weight loss. She also previously admitted to having injections to change the shape of her face, and make her jaw look 'skinnier,' after suffering with TMJ (temporomandibular joint dysfunction). However, Kelly has repeatedly and furiously denied that she has had any cosmetic procedures besides Botox. Last year, she declared that she was a 'huge fan' of plastic surgery, but insisted that she was too scared to get anything done after seeing her mother go under the knife so many times. She told People: 'I am a huge fan of plastic surgery. What it does for people is amazing. It can change people's lives and give them the confidence they've been lacking, and make people feel beautiful in the way they want to feel beautiful. 'But I've never done anything but Botox. I'm too scared. I've always been in the camp of if you think it's broken, fix it. You don't have to be stuck with a nose you hate for the rest of your life. So yes, I'm a huge fan.' She explained the root of her fear, saying: 'I watched my mum go through every recovery from everything she's ever had done, and it looks awful'. They raced to the comments to admit they could barely recognise the star and accused her of getting heavy cosmetic work done that had made her look as though she'd had a 'full head transplant' Sharon, 72, has undergone a range of procedures including a gastric band, full facelift, tummy tuck, an eyelift, breast implants, abdominoplasty and Botox. While she has branded her 2021 facelift the 'worst thing she ever did' after the procedure left her 'looking like a cyclops' and 'Quasimodo'. Back in March last year, Sharon shocked the public after she made her return to UK reality TV on Celebrity Big Brother. The star couldn't hide her weight loss on the show as she revealed doctors 'can't figure out' why she hasn't been able to gain weight back after she stopped using Ozempic months ago. 'The doctors can't figure it out,' she said. 'But I think it's just because I'm getting older and as you get older you lose weight anyway and shrink and shrivel off.' On why she decided to start receiving Ozempic injections, Sharon said 'everyone was doing it'.

Sabrina Carpenter fans crack Espresso 'meaning' before Man's Best Friend launch
Sabrina Carpenter fans have been left convinced the singer has a hidden message in her hit song Espresso that only fans of a certain video game franchise will be able to decipher Sabrina Carpenter fans are all talking about a new theory that the songstress has hidden a nod to a legendary video game within her smash hit Espresso that only the biggest gamers would be able to crack. Sabrina has been showered with praise for her 2024 anthem, which secured her debut atop the Billboard Global 200 chart and earned her two Grammys for Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Remixed Recording. Now, TikTok users are speculating about the existence of an Easter egg in the award-winning tune. A woman named Nicolette posted a clip where her partner Austin John, a well-known gaming YouTuber, suggests there's a tune from The Legend of Zelda subtly woven into Espresso's intro. In a stirring reveal, the video titled "Sabrina Carpenter is a Zelda fan?!" features Austin matching the initial notes of Espresso with the iconic melody of Zelda's Lullaby from the timeless instalment, Ocarina of Time, which was first released in 1998 for Nintendo's N64. By syncing the two melodies, he made the declaration: "Zelda's Lullaby is in Sabrina Carpenter's Espresso." He quipped in the caption: "Sabrina Carpenter definitely played Breath of the Wild." Fans were left scratching their heads after noticing striking similarities between two songs. This sparked theories about Sabrina Carpenter's fondness for the classic video game Legend of Zelda, and some fans spotted her potential as a frontrunner to star in the anticipated live-action film version of the gaming franchise. The revelation led many to speculate that Sabrina's adoration for the game might see her snagging the role of Princess Zelda in the forthcoming movie adaptation, which is set to be released in 2027. Casting suggestions flooded in, with one user commenting: "Then make Sabrina Carpenter play Princess Zelda. She has the acting chops, who says no?" A third wrote: "How are people only just noticing this? I recognised it after my first time listening to Espresso." But some fans weren't so quick to jump on the bandwagon, suggesting that it might be a bit ambitious to claim that Zelda's Lullaby featured in Espresso based solely on a few identical introductory notes. Still, this wouldn't mark the first time Sabrina has tipped her hat to the gaming universe. A clever lyric in the chorus of Espresso states, "Switch it up like Nintendo", an obvious nod to the popular Nintendo Switch console. Whether or not Espresso intentionally echoes Zelda's Lullaby, we're sure to see more witty lyrics and interesting crossovers when Sabrina drops her new album, Man's Best Friend, on August 29.
