'I'm worried Harry Garside will punch me in the mouth': dirty dancing threat

The Advertiser2 days ago

Dancing With The Stars is back on Seven from Sunday, June 15, with 12 new celebrities ready to rhumba.
And, according to at least one contestant, maybe also rumble.
The line-up for the new season is:
Micallef, former host of Mad as Hell and Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation, says he has long felt that his "true calling" was dance but he sees Harry Garside as his biggest threat on Dancing With The Stars.
What are your dancing strengths?
"There are really too many to list. The real question should be: is there a dance that can accommodate all my skills? My answer to that would be 'no way'."
Any fears going into the show?
"I have always been afraid of ghosts and this fear is still with me. I'm worried Seven will show old sketches featuring me on Full Frontal - a sketch show from the '90s - and I'll get cancelled."
What will you get out of the experience?
"Beating Rebecca Gibney will be enough for me. Beating everybody else as well is just the icing on the cake."
How will you cope with criticism from the judges?
"You mean how will I cope with all their unalloyed praise? I'll take it in my stride, I'm sure. It may get a little embarrassing week after week but that's their problem."
What's something we don't know about you that might surprise your fans?
"I think the only thing that will surprise anybody is that I have fans. It will surprise me anyway. After all, I've been on the ABC for the last 12 years."
Who's your biggest threat in the show?
"Harry Garside. I'm worried he will punch me in the mouth. Actually, I'm worried Felicity Ward will punch me in the mouth too."
How would you psych yourself up before you step onto the dance floor?
"I remind myself that I started my TV career at Seven 30 years ago and that, with Dancing With The Stars, I'm probably going to end it there too. With nothing to lose, I'm just going to relax and enjoy myself."

'The show is not being cancelled': Seven denies Sonia Kruger in trouble after debunking reports Dancing With The Stars not renewed

Channel 7 has publicly denied reports that Dancing With The Stars Australia will not be renewed after speculation the cancellation could impact the show's hosts Sonia Kruger and Dr Chris Brown. Dancing With The Stars is set to return to Channel 7 next week with 12 popular Australian celebrities set to tackle the foxtrot. Kruger, 59, is reportedly under contract with Seven for over $1 million a year and currently hosts The Voice and Dancing With The Stars. The TV star, who began her career as a ballroom dancer and appeared in the iconic film Strictly Ballroom, has been closely associated with the dance series since it first aired on Seven in 2004. However, the TV star could soon be down to just one gig at Seven amid reports the upcoming season of the long-running dance competition series will be its last. A TV insider who spoke to claimed Seven was 'tipped to axe' Dancing With The Stars because the show is too expensive to produce. Seven's decision to 'revive' the show in 2021 was reportedly at the centre of contract negotiations to woo Kruger back from Channel 9. The contract, which made Kruger one of the highest-paid women in Aussie TV, also included gigs on the now-cancelled Holey Moley and Big Brother. If true, Kruger will be down to just her hosting duties on The Voice to justify her seven figure salary, a rarity in the industry amid a massive drop in viewers and advertising revenue in free-to-air. In a statement to the Daily Mail, Seven debunked reports that Dancing With The Stars will not return to screens in 2026 and insisted 'the show is not being cancelled'. Nine gave Kruger her first on-air presenting role on the series Wonder World! in the 1990s before she moved over to Seven to work as an entertainment reporter. In 2011, Kruger joined Nine for the second time where she hosted the morning program Mornings alongside David Campbell and its successor Today Extra, as well as Big Brother and The Voice. Kruger was rehired by Seven in 2019 by then-CEO James Warburton, who she infamously called 'God' in her Gold Logie acceptance speech. Despite decades of experience, Kruger was only nominated for the Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter at the Logie Awards for the first time in 2022. She was first nominated for the Gold Logie Award for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television in 2022 and won the top gong in 2023.

‘It's more of a mercy killing than an axing': Channel 10 preparing to announce new current affairs program to replace The Project

TV industry insiders have made grave predictions about the future of Ten's flagship current affairs program The Project amid reports the show will end in the coming months. Produced by Rove McManus' Roving Enterprises, the weeknight current affairs show first hit Aussie screens in 2009 and has been a mainstay of the network's primetime line up. According to TV insider Peter Ford, The Project 'won't last' until the end of 2025. "I don't think The Project will see the year out," Ford told 3AW Breakfast on Friday. "Quite frankly at the moment, it's more of a mercy killing than an axing." The series' original panel consisted of Carrie Bickmore, Charlie Pickering and Dave Hughes but its most well-known line up was arguably Bickmore, Peter Helliar, Waleed Aly and Hamish McDonald. It was this era that saw The Project and its hosts pick up a trophy case of Logie wins, including Gold Logies for Bickmore in 2015 and Aly in 2016. Bickmore and Helliar left the Melbourne-based show in 2022 amid reported budget cuts and declining viewership at the free-to-air broadcaster. The struggling program currently features a rotating line up of regular presenters including Aly, Sarah Harris, Sam Taunton and Georgie Tunny from Sunday to Friday. Meanwhile, industry website TV Blackbox is reporting a new show is being shaped to only air four nights a week — Monday to Thursday — to replace The Project by August. The new show will reportedly run for just 30 minutes as opposed to The Project's current one-hour timeslot. It is understood Ten will be broadcasting the new show from Sydney to save on costs and already broadcasts The Project from Sydney on Sundays. The update comes days after it was revealed Ten has wooed several prominent journalists away from rival Seven with generous salary bumps. Among the shiny new names at Ten are ex-Spotlight producer and Sunday Night reporter Denham Hitchcock and former Seven correspondent Amelia Brace. has reached out to Channel 10 for comment.
