FACTa day ago

The summer festival takes place in a spectacular setting.
Summer holidays don't have to mean leaving the Middle East. Saudi Arabia's Saudi Seasons continues with the Aseer Summer Season 2025, which is filled with exciting events. Running until 1 September, it includes food stalls, pop-up shops and entertainment.
Aseer Summer Season 2025 takes place in Aseer, Saudi Arabia, which boasts mountains, forests and, most importantly, cooler temperatures. Now, these lush landscapes are set to get more exciting, thanks to a range of family-friendly events.
The programme features over 600 curated experiences spread across six distinct destinations, each designed to highlight Aseer's rich heritage, creative spirit, and breathtaking landscapes. Some of the highlights of Aseer Summer Season 2025 include Plato, a lively entertainment space for families; Cowboy Town, which brings a taste of the Wild West to the Saudi highlands; and Rakayb, a tranquil park lined with fruit trees.
Cultural highlights like Al-Muftaha Village, Joud Camp, and The Summer Gathering host performances, workshops, and interactive events that pay tribute to Aseer's traditions.
As part of Saudi Arabia's 'Colour Your Summer' campaign, the season invites travellers to explore the region's cooler mountain climate, where temperatures hover between 15 and 25°C, offering a refreshing contrast to the rest of the Kingdom.
Aseer is located in the province of Aseer, which is a two-hour flight from Riyadh. If you're planning to extend your trip, make sure you visit Aseer's heritage sites: Rijal Almaa village, Jaresh archaeological site, and the Heritage House in Al Namas.
Saudi Arabia's cultural calendar is filled with seasons, from Riyadh Season to Jeddah Events. Riyadh Season is scheduled to return in the winter, and Jeddah Season 2025 is currently running.
Join the fun.

Saudi Arabia maintains smooth air traffic amid surge in flights

Saudi Arabia has maintained the smooth flow of air traffic despite the rising tensions in the region and surge in flights. According to Saudi Press Agency, the Kingdom opened its airspace and activated advanced crisis management protocols to handle an average of over 1,330 daily flights, nearly twice the number recorded before the conflict began. To accommodate the surge, the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) opened additional air routes, expanded airspace capacity, and implemented advanced navigational procedures that reduced flight times and prevented delays. More than 220 international air carriers crossed Saudi skies during this period, with the Kingdom ensuring safety and continuity through pre-planned expansion procedures and strict airspace security. Flight operations were supported by real-time data analysis, high-tech surveillance systems, and over 1,900 aviation professionals, including more than 700 air traffic controllers. Saudi Arabia's extensive air navigation system, featuring 20 control towers, 15 area control sectors, and over 1,200 navigation devices, also played a critical role in maintaining uninterrupted and secure air traffic operations.

Academy elects Haifaa Al-Mansour to Board of Governors

As a result of this election and the previously announced branch-elected 2025-2026 governors, the 55-member Board comprises 55% women and 31% from underrepresented communities. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has elected three new governors-at-large to its Board of Governors: Saudi filmmaker Haifaa Al-Mansour (Directors Branch), Effie T. Brown (Producers Branch) and Annie Chang (Production and Technology Branch, Science and Technology Council Chair). Each will begin a three-year term with the start of the Academy's 2025–2026 fiscal year. Haifaa Al-Mansour rose to global recognition in 2012 with the release of Wadjda, the first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia and the first directed by a Saudi woman. Since then, she has become a prominent voice in international cinema and a sought-after television director in Hollywood, contributing to acclaimed series such as Archive 81, City of Fire, Tales of the Walking Dead and Bosch: Legacy. In 2019, her film The Perfect Candidate was selected as Saudi Arabia's official submission for Best International Feature at the 92nd Academy Awards, although it did not receive a nomination. Joining her on the Board are Effie T. Brown, a producer known for championing inclusive storytelling, and Annie Chang, an expert in production technologies. The three new governors-at-large bring wide-ranging expertise and diverse perspectives to the Academy's leadership at a time when it is strengthening its global and industry outreach. Academy President Janet Yang said: 'We're thrilled to welcome Haifaa, Effie and Annie to the Academy's Board of Governors. Their wealth of experiences, perspectives and dedication will be vital to our ongoing global and industry outreach efforts. I also thank my fellow at-large governors DeVon Franklin and Rodrigo García for their incredible leadership over the past six years.' Governors-at-large, like the representatives elected from each of the Academy's 19 branches, may serve up to two three-year terms (consecutively or not), followed by a two-year break before becoming eligible for another two terms—capped at a lifetime maximum of 12 years. The Board is responsible for shaping the Academy's strategic direction, ensuring financial stability, and upholding its mission. With this latest election and the newly confirmed branch-elected governors for 2025–2026, the Academy's 55-member Board now consists of 55% women and 31% individuals from underrepresented communities, reflecting ongoing efforts toward greater inclusivity and representation in the film industry.

Viu launches new Arabic reality special ‘The Big Bang Birthday'

Viu has premiered a new Arabic Viu Original reality special, The Big Bang Birthday, which began streaming on 23 June across the MENA region. The one-off special is the latest in Viu's ongoing investment in locally rooted content and follows the success of 2023's We Wed (ليلة العمر). Set and filmed in Abu Dhabi, the programme follows four prominent Arab influencers as they plan a surprise birthday celebration for digital creator Hadeel Marei. Known for her outspoken humour and expressive style, Marei has amassed over two million Instagram followers and a strong regional following across Egypt and the Gulf. The cast includes Saudi content creator Amy Roko, Syrian lifestyle influencer Dana Halabi, Saudi rapper Jara and Sudanese beauty creator Yussra Youssif. The show explores the group dynamic as they organise the celebration, offering viewers a candid look at female friendships and cultural identity through the lens of a weekend-long surprise. Shot across recognisable Abu Dhabi locations — including Ferrari World, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, the Mangrove National Park and the Abu Dhabi Souk — the show blends travel, lifestyle and unscripted reality formats. The special culminates in a final surprise moment revealed to Marei during the celebration. Directed by Lebanese filmmaker and university lecturer Farah Alameh, the production adopts a documentary-inspired visual style with cinematic elements. A private screening was held ahead of the launch at VOX Cinemas, Yas Mall. Samer Majzoub, General Manager of Viu MENA, said the project reflects the platform's commitment to Arabic-language productions and culturally relevant storytelling: 'The authentic emotion and relatable production style of this female-led special connect us to the cultural heartbeat of Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the wider region.'
