Couple 'lost everything' in blaze after 90th birthday plans turned to heartbreak
'Luckily the house did not get burned, but with the water damage in the house, everything is ruined'
Damage caused after a fire broke out at the home of Brenda Burrows and Harold Sharp
A devastated elderly couple have been left with nothing after a fire engulfed their home. Harold Sharp was set to celebrate his 90th birthday at their bungalow in Prestatyn on Sunday, May 17.
But the day before, his partner Brenda Burrows was tidying up outside with a weed burner when an ember ignited a blaze in the garage, which quickly spread.
"My mum had visitors down on the Saturday," explained daughter Kendra Burrows. "It was Harold's 90th birthday on the Sunday.
"When they left mum went outside and was burning weeds with a weed burner, trying to get the driveway presentable, because there were more visitors coming down on the Sunday.
"She was burning weeds near the garage and an ember has caught the garage without her knowing and with the weather being so dry - it's wooden doors on the garage - and it has just gone up. It was destroyed."
Kendra recounted how the fire then moved to the utility room, situated between the garage and the house, which was also completely burned down, before reaching a room in the attic of their home, reports North Wales Live.

However, the fire brigade arrived promptly to put out the flames, but the water used caused all the ceilings to collapse and damaged the furniture inside the property.
"Luckily the house did not get burned, but with the water damage in the house, everything is ruined," said Kendra, who also mentioned that the neighbouring property suffered damage from the fire.
Harold and Brenda are currently residing with Kendra in Rhyl as they attempt to recover from the devastation. They might have the opportunity to move into temporary accommodation soon.

Unfortunately, the couple did not have insurance, prompting the launch of a fundraising campaign to support them. A statement on the Gofundme page, accessible for donations, reads: "Hi, my name is Kendra, my mum and dad's house caught fire on Saturday 17/5/25.
"They are 83 and 90 years of age and have lost almost everything through fire and water damage. They are not insured and are absolutely devastated that we have to ask for help but needs must.
"We would really appreciate any donations so we can get them back into their home as soon as possible."
Damage after the fire
Kendra mentioned that her former employer, Ash Waste in Wrexham, has kindly donated two skips to aid in clearing the debris. Brenda, having spent 35 years in the building trade, is also seeking assistance from builders who may know her.
Kendra shared that Harold, who suffers from dementia, sometimes wakes up disoriented, unsure of his surroundings or what has occurred.

Brenda is equally distraught, feeling guilty, but Kendra reassures that it was simply a freak accident.
A spokesperson for the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service reported: "The fire caused 100% damage to the garage of the property. Four crews attended," adding that casualties received precautionary checks at the scene after they were called to the blaze in Prestatyn at 5.15pm on Saturday.

Iconic 'Popeye' boat reported missing in ‘Abersoch Triangle'
An old fishing vessel that's featured in countless photos has been listed as 'missing' by its perplexed owner. Known as the 'Red Boat', it has languished in Abersoch's inner harbour, Gwynedd, for at least a quarter of a century. The boat's chubby outline and striking colour gave it semi-iconic status – so much so that it featured on a school mural and appeared in a children's story. But in late May, owner Peter Hazell was left scratching his head when arriving at the harbour to find its berth empty. The businessman bought the Red Boat as a renovation project five years ago – he was hoping to make a start once legal matters had been clarified. After its disappearance, he issued an appeal on Facebook 's Abersoch Appreciation Page but this drew a blank. 'It's still a mystery,' he said. 'There are over 20,000 people in that group yet not one person has offered any sensible clues. Someone must have authorised and paid for its removal.' In the absence of information, the appeal became the butt of gentle online humour instead. One man wondered if the boat had disappeared into the 'Abersoch Triangle'. Another added: 'Popeye probably wanted it back.' A call was issued to check back gardens. Little is known about the boat's history or name. Over the years it's had several owners with some living onboard for short spells. Join the North Wales Live WhatsApp community group where you can get the latest stories delivered straight to your phone Online photos of the Red Boat residing at the inner harbour go back to at least 2001. Not so long ago the vessel was the main feature of a mural on Ysgol Sarn Bach near Abersoch. Its most recent known appearance in a photo was on May 15. Despite being in a poor state of repair, Mr Hazell had ambitions to renovate the boat once he'd established who was responsible for the berth. His aim was to formalise the berthing arrangement on land with no obvious ownership – he said the Land Registry has been unable to clarify. He said: 'I fully acknowledge that cosmetically the boat was in poor condition, although the hull was solid. She rested above the high average high water mark and the hull would only be exposed to water on high spring tides. 'My intention was to renovate and I am confident Red Boat was capable of being made weatherproof and waterproof. But before doing so I wanted to be sure of the rights of occupation.' Local enquiries about the boat's whereabouts have so far failed to provide answers. Natural Resources Wales has been removing abandoned boats, classified as marine litter, but its efforts have so far focussed solely on the Dee Estuary in northeast Wales. If it was removed as part of a clean-up, by a different body, Mr Hazell wonders why he wasn't approached first, being the known owner. 'How has someone has just removed my boat without notice?,' he said. 'No one is wanting to take responsibility.' Child, 6, died after inhaling helium from a large Mylar balloon, medical examiner says
A six-year-old Illinois boy died after inhaling helium from a large, 'child-size' Mylar balloon just days after his birthday, according to officials. Gunnar Hyatt likely suffocated and died after inhaling helium from the balloon last Thursday, May 29, WFIE reported. Hyatt, who had just celebrated his sixth birthday eight days before, was examined by Wabash County Coroner Shaun Keepes at the family's home in Mt. Carmel, a city bordering the state of Indiana. Preliminary autopsy findings indicate that Hyatt's cause of death was consistent with suffocation due to a Mylar-helium filled balloon, Keepes said. Additional testing will be required to determine the boy's official cause of death, he added. Hyatt, born on May 21, 2019, in Evansville, Indiana, was remembered as a 'joyful and fun-spirited little boy whose laughter brightened every room and whose heart was full of adventure,' according to his obituary. The boy, whom his family affectionately referred to as 'Gunny Bunny,' loved being outdoors, playing baseball, fishing, or hunting, and cherished his parents and two older siblings. 'Gunner lived life with a fearless spirit, a playful heart, and a smile that will never be forgotten,' the obituary added. A GoFundMe set up to help the family described Hyatt as 'the craziest, most loving little boy.' It had raised over $19,000 as of Thursday morning. Following his death, the coroner's office hoped to raise public awareness about the potential dangers of large Mylar balloons that had been forgotten. 'While often seen as harmless decorations, these balloons can pose serious risks – particularly to young children – including the rare but devastating possibility of suffocation and/or helium toxicity,' Keepes said. The Mount Carmel Police Department and the Illinois State Police Child Death Task Force are also investigating the incident.
