Man charged with supplying chemicals to Palm Springs fertility clinic bomber dies in custody

Independent6 hours ago

A Washington state man who was charged with aiding the bomber of a fertility clinic in Southern California has died in federal custody just weeks after his arrest, prison officials said Tuesday.
Daniel Park, 32, was accused of supplying chemicals to Guy Edward Bartkus of California, the bomber, who died in the May 17 explosion.
The two men connected in fringe online forums over their shared beliefs against human procreation, investigators said. The blast gutted the clinic in Palm Springs, east of Los Angeles, and shattered the windows of nearby buildings, with officials calling the attack terrorism. The facility was closed, and no embryos were damaged.
Park, of suburban Seattle, was found unresponsive at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles Tuesday morning and was pronounced dead at a hospital, the Bureau of Prisons said in a statement. No cause of death was provided.
Park shipped 180 pounds (about 82 kilograms) of ammonium nitrate to Bartkus in January and bought another 90 pounds (about 41 kilograms) and had it shipped to him days before the explosion, investigators said. Park purchased ammonium nitrate online in several transactions between October 2022 and May 2025, according to a federal complaint.
Authorities said Park traveled to Twentynine Palms, California, near Palm Springs, to experiment with them in the bomber's garage months before the attack.
Three days before Park visited him in January, Bartkus asked an AI chat application about explosives, detonation velocity, diesel and gasoline mixtures, the complaint said. The discussion centered on how to create the most powerful blast.
Park was taken into custody at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport, after he was extradited from Poland, where he fled four days after the attack. Park had been charged with providing and attempting to provide material support to terrorists.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California, which is prosecuting the case, didn't immediately respond to an email seeking details about Park's death.
Park and Bartkus bonded over a 'shared belief that people shouldn't exist,' Akil Davis, the FBI's assistant director in charge, said earlier this month.
They believed in anti-natalism, a fringe theory that opposes childbirth and population growth and contends that people should not continue to procreate. Officials said Bartkus intentionally targeted the American Reproductive Centers, a clinic that provides services to help people get pregnant, including in vitro fertilization and fertility evaluations.
Park appeared to be a frequent poster in an anti-natalist Reddit forum going back nearly a decade, according to court papers. In 2016, he spoke of recruiting others to the movement, which he described as hopeful.
According to court papers, he wrote: 'When people are lost and distraught, death is always an option.'
Relatives told federal investigators that Park had made 'pro-mortalist' statements since high school, according to the complaint.
More recently, in March, he posted in the forum to say he was seeking to find fellow anti-natalists in and around Washington state to 'start some protests or just any in-person events,' according to court papers. The post did not receive any public comments.

EXCLUSIVE Kash Patel uncovers proof former FBI bosses buried evidence that China interfered in 2020 election as he vows to take action

FBI Director Kash Patel has dug up evidence the agency shut down an investigation that shows the former director buried proof China interfered in the 2020 presidential election. The Daily Mail can exclusively report that Patel plans to hand over to Congress on Wednesday proof that former FBI Director Christopher Wray lied to Congress. Specifically, he will detail how headquarters 'recalled' a report solely because it contradicted Wray's claims under oath to Congress that China was not conducting a foreign influence campaign in U.S. elections. The FBI field office in Albany, New York produced an Internal Intelligence Report (IRR) that was published and then pulled back without justification, Patel reveals. FBI bosses at the time shut down this legitimate investigation into the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to shield Wray from fallout, sources tell the Daily Mail. The FBI was investigating at the time the existence of CCP-produced drivers licenses to obtain paper ballots and the Albany office published an IRR on the claims. They were then told by headquarters to pull the report and pretend it didn't exist, Patel will reveal. The current Director will tell Congress on Wednesday that the reason the IRR on this investigation was never released was because they admitted that 'the reporting will contradict Director Wray's testimony.' An FBI official tells the Daily Mail that the current FBI found the IRR and discovered that previous leadership pulled the report. During a hearing before the Senate in September 2020, then-Director Wray was asked by Republican Sen. Gary Peters whether voting by mail is secure. 'We take all election threats seriously,' Wray said at the time. 'And our role is to investigate the threat accuracy,' he added before insisting: 'Now, we have not seen, historically, any kind of coordinated national voter fraud effort in a major election, whether it's by mail or otherwise.' But Patel's new bombshell information claims that this was not true and that Wray lied to Congress while under oath. Patel vows that there will be accountability for those who tried to bury the report and continue pushing claims that there was no legitimate evidence that the CCP was conducting a foreign influence campaign on the 2020 presidential election. 'Based on our continued review and production of FBI documents related to the CCP's plot to interfere in the 2020 U.S. Presidential election, previous FBI leadership chose to play politics and withhold key information from the American people – exposing the weaponization of law enforcement for political purposes during the height of the 2020 election season,' Patel said in a statement with Deputy Director Dan Bongino. They added: 'This FBI leadership team will continue keeping our promise of aggressive transparency and working around the clock to fix the underlying problems to restore the FBI to the trusted institution the American people deserve.' Patel will tell Congress that the FBI's Foreign Influence Task Force (FITF) did not approve reissuance of the IRR after it was pulled and then further confirmed by investigators. 'We have found no information to indicate that FITF-China properly investigated the reported information or followed logical investigative leads, despite corroborating intergovernmental reporting,' Patel will reveal on Wednesday.

FBI to move thousands of agents from immigration to counterterrorism in wake of Iran strikes: reports

The FBI is planning to move thousands of agents working in immigration enforcement to boost counterterrorism efforts in the wake of U.S. strikes on Iran, according to reports. A memo was reportedly distributed in the past 48 hours to FBI field office directors with instructions to focus resources on terror threats, including those made at home, sources told CBS News, while insiders told ABC News that potentially thousands of agents could be moved. 'The FBI does not comment on specific operational adjustments or personnel decisions,' an FBI official spokesperson said in a statement to The Independent. 'However, we continuously assess and realign our resources to respond to the most pressing threats to our national security and to ensure the safety of the American people.' FBI Director Kash Patel warned Monday that the bureau's main priority is now stopping any possible retaliation at home. 'Right now the focus, given the nature especially of what just happened, has to be on protecting the homeland and protecting our communities,' Patel said at the National Sheriffs' Association conference in Florida. Following the Trump administration's immigration crackdown, the FBI assigned agents to support immigration enforcement efforts. But agents had previously expressed concern that as a result, fewer resources were working on counterterrorism threats, according to ABC. Employees complained about being pulled off counterterrorism tasks to work on immigration issues, sources also told CBS. The move to refocus agents comes swiftly after the National Terrorism Advisory System issued a bulletin Sunday warning Americans that the Iran conflict has created a 'heightened threat environment' in the U.S. 'Low-level cyber attacks against U.S. networks by pro-Iranian hacktivists are likely, and cyber actors affiliated with the Iranian government may conduct attacks against U.S. networks,' the bulletin said. 'Iran also has a long-standing commitment to target U.S. government officials it views as responsible for the death of an Iranian military commander killed in January 2020.' 'The likelihood of violent extremists in the Homeland independently mobilizing to violence in response to the conflict would likely increase if Iranian leadership issued a religious ruling calling for retaliatory violence against targets in the Homeland,' the warning continued. President Donald Trump raged at Israel and Iran Tuesday morning after the 'complete and total' ceasefire he announced on Monday evening immediately broke down, with the two sides accusing each other of violations. The chaos led to Trump telling reporters on the South Lawn of the White House that neither side 'knows what the f*** they're doing.' 'Iran violated it, but Israel violated it too. Israel, as soon as we made the deal, they came out and they dropped a load of bombs the likes of which I've never seen before. The biggest load that we've seen,' the president said, visibly angry.

Cobra Kai star Martin Kove breaks silence over shock vampire bite that left his co-star in agony

Just one day after it was revealed Cobra Kai star Martin Kove was kicked out of a Washington fan convention for biting his co-star Alicia Hannah-Kim, the actor is breaking his silence on the matter. The 78-year-old actor attended the Washington State Summer Con in Puyallup, Washington over the weekend, where an incident occured in the VIP section. His Cobra Kai co-star Hannah-Kim, 37, was also at the convention, reporting to a police officer that Kove bit her so hard it almost drew blood, causing her to scream in pain. Hannah-Kim refused to press charges against Kove, though she did file a report with the venue, which included taking photos of the bite mark and bruises. After Hannah-Kim and her husband, actor Sebastian Roche, confronted Kove after the incident, he reportedly became 'furious and outraged and visibly angry,' insisting, 'he bit me for fun.' Kove was banished from the convention, and now he's breaking his silence on the incident in a statement to Deadline. 'I deeply regret and apologize for my actions regarding the incident with Alicia [Hannah-Kim], a genuinely kind and wonderful person who didn't deserve to be put in this position,' Kove said in a statement from Jaffe & Company PR & Crisis Management. 'I've always respected her and considered her a highly professional and talented co-worker on Cobra Kai,' he added, before addressing the incident. 'I was being playful in the moment but went too far and there is absolutely no excuse for my behavior,' Kove continued. 'I regret my actions for which I take full responsibility for what I did, and again I apologize to her and her husband. I'm committed to learning from this and it will never happen again,' he concluded. The report from the incident revealed that Kove did apologize to Hannah-Kim and her husband Roche, though now he's doing so publicly. Photos were also taken of Hannah-Kim's arm, which showcased a, 'very noticeable bite mark on her arm that was already turning blue and bruising.' Kove was told to leave the convention, and the officer told him never to do something like that again. Kim played Kim Da-Eun, a powerful South Korean sensei who is also the granddaughter of Kim Sun-Yung, the master who taught initially taught Kove's character John Kreese in his youth. The report from the incident revealed that Kove did apologize to Hannah-Kim and her husband Roche, though now he's doing so publicly. Kove played Cobra Kai sensei John Kreese in the 1984 classic The Karate Kid, and its 1986 and 1989 sequels, The Karate Kid Part II and The Karate Kid Part III. He reprised that role for Cobra Kai, set 34 years after the events of the original Karate Kid film, which originally aired on YouTube Red before moving to Netflix. The show enjoyed a strong run spanning six seasons, following Kreese's old student Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and his rivalry with Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), which ended its run back in February. Kove will next be seen in Killing Mary Sue with Sean Patrick Flannery, Dermot Mulroney and Jason Mewes, while Hannah-Kim is filming the South Korean TV series The North Star.
