RW: Barrett is mentioned as expendable mostly because of his contract and a busy situation on the wing. If you're referring to DeMar DeRozan and Pascal Siakam with the last part I have mixed thoughts. DeRozan, like Barrett (especially as a Raptor), is a rare scoring machine lacking a consistent three-point shot and a major liability defensively. I don't see Barrett as being as poor defensively as DeRozan, especially after he made strides this season, partly because of more dedication to that side of the game, but the advanced stats show he doesn't really drive winning. Toronto believes in advanced metrics and in winning players so even though Barrett is a great example for Canadian fans, does have many good qualities as a player and loves being here, they will have to explore the market for him to ease luxury tax and roster concerns down the line.

RW: I don't think Barrett will be moved until the New Year, at the earliest. More concerned with spacing than with defence as Jakob Poeltl and Scottie Barnes are elite defenders and I think Brandon Ingram is about average. Barrett and Immanuel Quickley are below average defensively, but both have their moments. Plus I could see Barrett being replaced by Ochai Agbaji pretty early in games (a big upgrade defensively and from three) allowing RJ to cook as the lead scorer on the bench (even though he'll start).

The spacing will be a bit rough, unless Barnes takes big steps forward as a three-point shooter. Poeltl is a total non-threat from out there, Barnes was terrible from three last season, Barrett, as mentioned, is inconsistent, while Quickley is elite and Ingram can be, but prefers to operate in the mid-range.

First things first: Shane Bieber did not take a boat across Lake Erie to expedite his trip to meet his new team in Toronto, a comment he made in jest a day earlier and borne out of excitement after learning of the trade from Cleveland to the Blue Jays. Article content That's not to say there wasn't some excitement in the journey, however, including a prolonged, get-out-of-the car stop at the border. Article content Article content Article content All good the rest of the whirlwind day, though, as the Jays prized trade deadline day acquisition arrived in his new city, excited and eager to get down to work. Article content There were meetings with coaches and greetings with teammates and even a bullpen session just prior to 6 p.m. to show off how his Tommy John rebuilt right elbow was performing as his rehab journey from last year's surgery progresses. Article content A lot going on, yes, but Bieber certainly felt invigorated about his new team and opportunity an hour or so before first pitch between his Jays and the Kansas City Royals on Friday. Article content 'I love it,' Bieber said of shifting from a lifeless Guardians team to a first-place Blue Jays outfit with designs on making big noise come October. Blue Jays put OF George Springer on concussion list
(Photo credit: Daniel Kucin Jr.-Imagn Images) The Toronto Blue Jays placed slugging outfielder George Springer on the 7-day concussion list Friday, four nights after he was hit in the head with a pitch. The move was made before Friday's game against the Kansas City Royals. It is retroactive to Tuesday. Springer was plunked by Orioles right-hander Kade Strowd during Monday's 11-4 loss to Baltimore. Springer was face down on the ground for more than a minute, but he remained alert before eventually being helped off the field. Springer, 35, is batting .291 with 18 homers and 57 RBIs in 101 games this season -- the four-time All-Star's best showing as a hitter since 2021. Toronto also activated center fielder Daulton Varsho (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list. Varsho last played for the Blue Jays on May 31 when he was injured while trying to leg out a triple against the Athletics. Varsho, 29, is batting .207 with eight homers and 20 RBIs in 24 games. The Blue Jays also optioned right-hander Paxton Schultz to Triple-A Buffalo. The 27-year-old owns a 4.56 ERA in 12 appearances (two starts) for Toronto this season.
