MG Cyberster
What even is a 'sports car'? I only ask because most of the cars that fit the accepted person-in-the-street definition aren't in fact sporty at all.
Traditionally, a sports car was low to the ground, had two doors, two seats and probably an open roof. It had a powerful engine. And its top priority was driving dynamics. That's as close as you'll get to a quantifiable declaration of sportiness.

But is a current BMW Z4 a sports car? Was the Mercedes SLC/SLK? Don't be daft. I've heard convincing arguments that the Mazda MX-5 is too limp in the engine department and too roly-poly in the corners to really be a sports car. I choose to ignore them because I adore the current MX-5, but I sort of get their point.
So, the Cyberster. It's got skin in the game here: the MGB, MGF and MG SV were all sports cars, of varying sorts. Does it do the business?
Dynamically, it's a bit of a pudding. An MG engineer told me the car's been softened off again from its original European spec: they felt they'd overdone the 'stiffen it up for those aggressive-driving, B-road warrior Brits' and had to smooth the edges back off because 'it's not supposed to be a track car".
For me, they slightly overdid it, allowing too much wallow into the suspension. There's a sense of top-heaviness to the car, some of which comes from the too-high driver's seat, and some of which is down to the restless damping, which never settles in one assured movement after it's been disturbed.

The steering is dead: a pity as I'd hoped going for the RWD 'Trophy' model would liberate the steering of corruption from the front motor in the 'GT' and unlock a bit of road feel. Not to be, I'm afraid: it's computer game stuff, without Forza 's handy re-wind feature.

Everton 'want to sign' Liverpool starlet who has also attracted attention from Crystal Palace
Everton are reportedly keen on signing 19-year-old Liverpool winger Ben Doak. The former Celtic youth, who has been capped six times by Scotland at senior international level, spent the 2024-25 season out on loan at Middlesbrough. Doak impressed at the Riverside, producing seven assists and three goals in 24 Championship appearances. Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town both tried to sign him in January but Liverpool preferred that he completed his loan. FA Cup winners Palace are understood to still hold an interest in Doak, but they now face fresh competition from the Toffees, according to Sky Sports. However, it is also claimed that Liverpool had been planning to assess Doak's readiness for first-team football at Anfield during their upcoming pre-season campaign. Doak has already made 10 senior appearances for the Reds, all coming under former manager Jurgen Klopp. He has featured in three Premier League games and three Europa League matches, with his other four Liverpool appearances all coming in the domestic cups. Klopp once described Doak as a 'special boy', adding: 'He's really confident and has something nobody else delivers really, this kind of dribbling, this kind of straight-forward bravery, all these kind of things.' Doak was named in Scotland's provisional 28-man squad for Euro 2024 last summer, before withdrawing due to injury. Explaining his decision to call up Doak, Scotland manager Clarke had said: 'Ben has a lot of talent, he catches your eye. Pace is something we haven't got in abundance. He's something a little bit different. 'I've never had the chance to work closely with Ben. It just seemed like the right opportunity to put him in, with the squad going up to 26 from 23. We'll have a look at Ben and see how he does.'

Redcar teachers to strike over longer school hours
Teachers at a chain of schools are set to go on strike in protest at plans to extend the school day. The National Education Union (NEU) said teachers at Outwood Grange Academy School in Redcar, alongside 14 other schools belonging to the trust across the country, will take industrial action. NEU regional secretary Beth Farhat claimed teachers had been forced into this position by an employer that "simply will not listen".Outwood Grange Academies Trust (OGAT) said it was "exceptionally disappointed" in the union's decision to strike. "We remain open to constructive dialogue," a spokesperson said. NEU said teachers would strike on 3 June, 10-11 June and 17-19 follows OGAT's decision extend the school by 30 minutes, it said. Ms Farhat said the changes were "deeply unpopular" and the trust's teachers already had a "huge workload" which was affecting staff retention. "We believe that by pushing ahead with these changes and ignoring their staff, OGAT will make matters even worse," she advised the trust to "listen to their staff" and negotiate with the union for the "sake of staff and pupils". 'Workload neutral' OGAT said it was increasing the length of the school day because it currently did not meet government's 32.5 hour-a-week minimum said its school day currently ended at 14:30 BST. "The small change we have proposed will mean students can learn more and achieve even stronger outcomes," a spokesperson said. They said they had also made a commitment to meet regularly with trade unions to "identify any unnecessary workload" so that the new school week was "workload neutral" for teachers. It said it was particularly disappointed that the union had chosen days when students were due to take "important exams". Follow BBC Tees on X, Facebook, Nextdoor and Instagram.
