Fiery Boat Explosion Near Fort Lauderdale Hospitalizes 11 on Memorial Day
The explosion occurred around 5:45 p.m. on Monday after a boat carrying 13 people erupted in flames, the Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue told NTD News, sister media of The Epoch Times, in an emailed statement.
Spokesperson Frank Guzman said the explosion sent some people into the water. The explosion occurred near a sandbar, a common place for boaters to gather. Nearby boaters immediately came to their aid.
Of those on board, 11 sustained injuries, including burns, and were sent to the trauma center at Broward Health Medical Center. Two of those involved were children who suffered 'extensive burn injuries,' Guzman said. Ten of the injured were transferred to a specialized burn unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, he said. The 11th was discharged from the hospital late Monday night.

The U.S. Coast Guard, Broward Sheriff's Office, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and Fort Lauderdale Police all responded to the scene, rescuing and transferring the injured to emergency medical services, according to the Coast Guard. Salvage operations for the boat are being arranged, and the FWC is leading the ongoing investigation into the cause of the explosion.

The accident happened just after 11:20 a.m. Monday, as Matthew Schultz was riding on a dual-axle car hauler sponsored by Air Ninja Gym. Seven children and two adults were on the trailer, which was being pulled at or below 5 mph by a Ford F-150 pickup, officials said.
Green Fire and EMS, who were participating in the parade, witnessed the accident and responded immediately, transporting Schultz to Akron Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Summit Metro Crash Team is assisting with the ongoing investigation, and Massillon Road was closed for two hours as authorities processed the scene.

Elgin police rank 6th for DUI arrests, per AAIM, falling from last year
The Elgin Police Department ranked in the top 10 law enforcement agencies making the most drunk driving arrests in 2024, though the ranking dropped from last year's second-place berth. The Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AAIM) released the results of its Illinois DUI Arrest Survey for 2024 that showed Elgin ranked number six. Elgin had 245 DUI arrests, the survey showed. 'Each arrest reflects the hard work and dedication of the officers who put themselves on the line every day. Their efforts help protect lives and prevent families from experiencing the pain of a crash,' said Rita Kreslin, AAIM executive director, in a press release. Last year, Elgin Police Department made 282 arrests to achieve the second-place spot. The change could be a result of different factors, like people using rideshare services to avoid drinking and driving or people staying at home more, said Elgin Sgt. Hector Gutierrez, the department's public information officer. EPD does 'no refusal' campaigns during holidays, including Memorial Day weekend. They allow police to work with prosecutors to obtain a seach warrant against drivers who refuse to take a breathalyzer, blood or urine test during a drunk driving stop or investigation, according to the Kane County State's attorney's office. A campaign is coming up for Labor Day weekend, Gutierrez said. 'We are going to be looking for intoxicated drivers on the roadway to keep everyone safe,' he said. 'Hopefully those (campaigns) resonate with people, and they are taking safety precautions,' Gutierrez said. AAIM's survey showed Det. Paul Dublinski had 22 DUI arrests in Elgin last year. Dublinski is a veteran officer who routinely has the highest number of DUI arrests in the department. 'We have officers who really care about getting DUI drivers off the roadway and making the streets safer for the community,' Gutierrez said. AAIM is an Illinois-only citizen activist group founded in 1982 by victims of drunk driving. Its survey, which started 35 years ago, had an 81% response rate from nearly 700 police agencies around the state in 2024. The survey showed the top 10 police departments were: Aurora remained the first in the state for the second year in a row. Naperville had one of the largest increases in arrests from 2023 to 2024, 51.8%, along with West Chicago, which had a 31.2% increase. The sheriff's department reporting the most DUI arrests was Winnebago County with 387. The top five list included McHenry County with 189 arrests, Cook County with 155, Lake County with 136, and Will County with 133. 'Enforcing DUI laws is demanding but essential work. The entire AAIM organization sincerely appreciates the officers' daily sacrifice, dedication to public safety, and efforts to save lives. We deeply value their constant commitment,' Kreslin said, in the release.

Testimony of girls on boat leads to new charge for George Pino, sources say
The testimony of the girls on the boat operated by Doral real estate broker George Pino when it crashed during the 2022 Labor Day weekend prompted Miami prosecutors to charge Pino with manslaughter, sources told the Miami Herald. Prosecutors filed the new charge Thursday. Pino, 54, was already charged with vessel homicide, a nearly identical felony charge that also carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison. Both charges are for killing 17-year-old Luciana 'Lucy' Fernandez, who was starting her senior year at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy. The Sept. 4, 2022, crash seriously injured her classmate, Katerina 'Katy' Puig, 20, a standout soccer player now confined to a wheelchair and still struggling to regain basic motor skills. The new charge reads that Pino 'intentionally committed an act or acts, and/or acted with culpable negligence .... which caused the death of Luciana Fernandez.' Pino's defense attorney Howard Srebnick could not be immediately reached for comment. On the day of the crash, there were 12 teenage girls on the boat; Pino's daughter, Cecilia, had just turned 18 and had invited 11 of her girlfriends to celebrate on the boating excursion with her parents, George and Cecilia Pino. Sources say several of the girls detailed the events leading up to the crash — including how much alcohol was flowing on the boat hours before — in recent interviews with Pino's attorneys. Records reviewed by the Miami Herald confirm at least one of the girls was drinking heavily that day. Puig's toxicology report from Nicklaus Children's Hospital near South Miami, where she was airlifted the night of the crash, shows her blood alcohol level was almost twice the .08% legal limit for driving. Her test was taken at 10:33 p.m., four hours after the crash. The boat had capsized, hurtling the 14 people into the bay. Three girls were unconscious when they were pulled from the water — Lucy, who died the next day in the hospital; Katy, then 17, who suffered traumatic brain injury; and Isabella Rodriguez, then 16, who had a brain bleed but has since recovered. Srebnick, Pino's attorney, has said the empty booze containers were from five boats tied up that day although he hasn't said who were on the other boats. The FWC's training manual and a slideshow presentation prepared by the State Attorney's Office for the FWC list significant injuries and deaths in a boat crash as probable cause for a blood draw in a sobriety test. Investigators on the scene knew that four of the 14 people on the boat were airlifted as trauma alert patients by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, including Lucy. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission also could have contacted the State Attorney's Office, which has a prosecutor on call 24/7 to help officers get a search warrant, arrest warrants and court orders in these types of cases. In fact, the second page of a State Attorney Office's slideshow for the FWC on vessel homicides gives the hotline number for the prosecutors. The FWC didn't call. Entire family — including kids ages 2, 5 and 12 — killed in fiery collision with wrong-way driver on Colorado highway
Two parents and their three young children were tragically killed in a fiery head-on collision with a wrong-way driver in Colorado early Monday morning. The family of five was driving in a GMC Yukon SUV on the southbound lane of a highway shortly after 7 a.m. when the other driver switched over from the northbound lane and crashed with such force that both vehicles burst into flames, KUSA reported.
