Hong Kong triathlon star excels in Malaysia to send National Games warning
Oscar Coggins sent an early-season warning to his 2025 National Games rivals after 'cruising' to a second-placed Asia Triathlon Cup finish in Malaysia on Saturday.
Tokyo Olympian Coggins came home in 53 minutes and 18 seconds, 55 seconds behind Max Studer, of Switzerland, who completed the closing five-kilometre run in a breakneck 15:07.
Coggins' fellow Hongkonger Jason Ng Tai-long was seventh after suffering a quadriceps cramp 2 kilometres from the finish line.
Head coach Andrew Wright, who attributed Ng's cramp to the 25-year-old 'not being fit enough for the pace they were running', said Coggins had 'exceeded expectations' in his season-opening event.
'He was back to his usual self,' Wright added. 'We knew he was fit and in good form, but to beat some very good athletes and come second in that field, while he was relatively cruising, is pretty impressive. Coggins and Ng's performances secured their spots for April's Asia Sprint Championships (ASC) in Hong Kong, which will double as a selection race for November's National Games.

National Games ticketing to start in August for Hong Kong, 3 months before event
Tickets for the National Games will be available in Hong Kong from August, three months ahead of the event, to synchronise with sales in Macau and on mainland China, the head of the local coordination office has said. Yeung Tak-keung, head of the National Games Coordination Office, said on Tuesday that the tickets would be sold on a unified platform to ensure easier management. 'We are preparing to sell souvenirs from July, and in August, tickets will go on sale in the three places at the same time,' Yeung told a radio programme. Further details would be announced in due course, he said. Ticket sales will open about three months before the 13-day top national sports event starts on November 9. It will be held in Hong Kong, Macau and parts of Guangdong province. This year's Games mark the first time Hong Kong has co-hosted the event. The city will hold eight of the 34 sporting contests, including the men's under-22 basketball, track cycling, fencing, golf, men's handball, rugby sevens, the triathlon and beach volleyball. Asked whether the launch of ticket sales was too close to the start of the Games, Yeung said a similar arrangement was done in the past.

Hong Kong tourism sector urged to provide packages, discounts for National Games
Hong Kong's tourism sector should consider offering promotional packages including hotel discounts to spectators at the coming National Games, which the city will co-host in November, authorities have said. Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui said on Monday that a unified ticket sales platform would be used for all Games events to be held in Guangdong province, Hong Kong and Macau, with more details to be announced soon. She said once the Guangdong Provincial Executive Committee had finalised ticketing policies, her bureau would encourage the tourism sector to develop various packages, with a view to attracting mainland Chinese and overseas visitors to attend the Games and explore Hong Kong. 'We have already got in touch with the tourism sector and hope that it can introduce some packages or discounts,' Law told a meeting of the Legislative Council's home affairs, culture and sports panel. 'When the ticketing arrangements are announced, all host cities will work together to tackle issues such as demand exceeding supply and scalping.' Tickets will be available via the official website and mobile applications, as well as offline channels such as official outlets and booths at venues.

Photo: RTHK Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law on Monday said all television stations in Hong Kong will broadcast the upcoming National Games. At a Legco panel meeting, sports sector lawmaker Kenneth Fok asked if local broadcasters would be able to televise the events. Law said the programmes will be produced by China Central Television (CCTV), but all television stations in the SAR could broadcast the events live. "For Guangdong and Macau, CCTV will be producing the shows. Hong Kong is not an exception," she said. "According to the plan, all television stations in Hong Kong will broadcast the events. I know that they have their work plans, and they are working to show more events to the public." Law added that Hong Kong-themed merchandise for the National Games is expected to be launched later this month and will be available at stores from July. Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong will be co-hosting the Games, and Hong Kong will stage eight competition events.
