Spain triumph in New York for consecutive SailGP wins

West Australian09-06-2025
Reigning champions Spain have put in a battling performance on the second day of the sixth round of SailGP, beating New Zealand and France in the final race in New York to clinch consecutive wins as the season reached the halfway point.
Coming off their season's first victory in San Francisco in March, Diego Botin's team went five points clear into day two and overcame a slump in race five to make the top three.
With shifting winds in the shadows of the Statue of Liberty on Sunday, Spain took control of the showdown on the Hudson River with an impeccable start, arriving three seconds ahead of New Zealand at gate two and three, and held their lead to clinch the victory.
Peter Burling's New Zealand, winners in New York last year, lost more distance in the final stages and reached the finish line 43 seconds behind the Spaniards.
The win saw Spain move up two places in the championship table on 46 points as they moved above three-times champions Australia, who finished fifth in New York, by one point.
"America is a special place for us and it's amazing to win again here," Spanish driver Botin said.
But it was not all smooth sailing for Spain on the event's final day.
They started off well with a second-placed finish in the day's opening race four, 16 seconds behind Brazil, who won their first-ever fleet race at SailGP since joining the league at the beginning of the season.
The Brazilians, who sat fifth after day one, were hopeful of a top-three finish, and were well positioned for just that when they finished fourth in the next race.
A tricky race five, meanwhile, did a lot of damage to Spain, who were 11th and dropped from top spot to fourth in the event standings.
Botin's crew earned a penalty in the decisive race six but made massive gains and got ahead of Brazil on the second-to-last leg to secure a spot in the event final.
Australia held onto their early lead to win the sixth race, grabbing their second victory of the event after they came out on top in the second race on Saturday.
France, who sailed very consistently on both days, put in a flawless performance to pick up a win in race five.
The season next moves to Europe, first returning to Britain as the fleet races in Portsmouth from July 19-20 before heading to Germany in August for the very first time.

Atletico coach suffers 14-year first to start La Liga

Despite debuting most of their new signings, Atletico Madrid have conceded two late goals to lose their opening Spanish league match for the first time under coach Diego Simeone. Host Espanyol's 2-1 win on Sunday was Atletico's first opening defeat since Simeone took over in late 2011. They hadn't previously lost a day-one La Liga game since 2009. Simeone started the match with five of the club's new signings for the season but it was Julian Alvarez, who scored 17 times in the league last season. who gave Atletico the lead in the 37th minute from a free kick. But they were stunned on the road by goals from Miguel Rubio in the 73rd and Pere Milla in the 84th. "It happens," Simeone said. "The result hurts, but it's going to make us improve and grow. I'm left with all the good things the team did." Last season, Atletico only twice lost a league match they were leading. Elsewhere, Nico Williams led Athletic Bilbao to a 3-2 win over Sevilla. Williams, who had been linked with a move away from his boyhood club and to Barcelona in the off-season, put the hosts ahead by converting a 36th-minute penalty kick. Athletic, coming off a fourth-placed finish last season, added to the lead thanks to Maroan Sannadi in the 43rd before Sevilla rallied with goals by Dodi Lukebakio in the 60th and Lucien Agoume in the 72nd. Robert Navarro put Athletic back in front for good in the 81st. Getafe scored a 2-0 win at Celta Vigo with second-half goals from Adrian Liso and Christantus Uche.

Rahm a winner despite losing LIV Golf playoff

Jon Rahm has successfully defended his LIV Golf season points title without winning an event all year, closing with an 11-under 60 before losing a playoff to Sebastian Munoz on the first extra hole in the Indianapolis event. Munoz won two days after becoming the first player to shoot 59 with a double bogey. The Colombian — with Rahm hitting balls on the driving range — birdied the final two holes in regulation for a 65 to match Rahm at 22 under at The Club at Chatham Hills. Rahm also lost on the first extra hole last week outside Chicago, falling to Dean Burmester in a three-way playoff that included Josele Ballester. On Sunday, Munoz beat the Spanish star with a birdie on the par-4 18th in the playoff. Rahm took the season points title from Chilean Joaquin Niemann, a five-time winner this season. Niemann shot a 66 to tie for fourth at 17 under, his first top-10 finish of the year that he didn't win. Munoz led Torque GC to the team event championship, finishing at 64 under to break the LIV record of 53 under. Cameron Smith (67) was the best-placed Australian at 13 under and in a tie for 14th. Compatriots Lucas Herbert (67) completed his three rounds four under the card, Matt Jones (67) three under and Marc Leishman (73) two over. The all-Aussie Ripper GC came home in 13th, and last, at 18 under. Ian Poulter birdied four of his last five holes for a 67 to tie for 17th and avoid relegation from the tour. Majesticks teammate Henrik Stenson was relegated, missing a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole that would have keep him on the tour and left Poulter out. With AAP.

Battling Australians edge ahead in race to SailGP title

Australia's Bonds Flying Roos have reclaimed top spot on the overall SailGP season leaderboard after a hard-fought second place finish in a gripping podium final against Great Britain and France. The Aussies shone all weekend at the Germany Sail Grand Prix, delivering a podium result in all but one of the seven qualifying fleet races to enter the winner-takes-all podium final as the top team on event points. Tom Slingsby's Australian crew summoned their noted resilience and hunting tactics to recover from third place after a challenging start to take down the British in the fifth leg of the race at Sassnitz, on the Baltic. That set up a nail-biting sprint to the finish line against France, with the Aussies pushing them all the way before ultimately crossing in second, securing their third podium of the 2025 SailGP Season. Tom Slingsby, the Bonds Flying Roos' driver, CEO & co-owner, said: "It was a tough day to predict but it felt good to get back into the final. We enjoyed it, and had a lot of fun out there." "Since the wing collapsed in San Francisco, we feel like we haven't been able to get back in there so this weekend, we're really glad with how we sailed. A big thanks to Sassnitz and Germany for putting it on," he added. The Aussies now top the season leaderboard on 61 points, with fierce rivals the Black Foils in second though with the same number of points. Emirates GBR are third on 58. Bonds Flying Roos strategist Tash Bryant said: "There were moments of frustrations today but the team dealt with it really well. We just kept building and looking for the next best thing. "In the Final, we had an unfortunate starting situation but we never gave up and kept fighting until the end. It was anyone's game the whole time, and I'm really proud of everyone on the team." Three events remain before the Grand Final in Abu Dhabi in November. The next round is in Saint-Tropez from September 12-13.
