Rybakina advances to WTA Canadian Open semis
The top five seeds and seven of the top 10 seeds were ousted before the quarter-finals at Montreal, opening the door for such upstarts as 18-year-old Mboko, who eliminated top seed Coco Gauff.
Rybakina, seeded ninth, seeks her third WTA title after Rome and Indian Wells in 2023. She has not reached a final since last year at Miami.
Rybakina broke 24th-seeded Kostyuk to open the match and led 2-1 when Kostyuk received medical treatment on her right wrist and forearm.
Kostyuk netted a backhand to surrender another break in the fifth game and Rybakina broke again to claim the first set in 37 minutes when Kostyuk sent a forehand long.
In the second set, Rybakina held twice before Kostyuk retired after 54 minutes due to her wrist issues.

"Failure taught me what success never could. It humbled me. It forced me to look inward, to ask hard questions, to rebuild with more intention and clarity. "Every mistake I made sharpened my understanding of who I am and who I'm not. And while I once feared those mistakes, I now see them as some of my greatest teachers." Badosa has won four WTA titles, the most recent coming last August in Washington. Her departure allows Swiss Jil Teichmann to reach the women's main draw for the Grand Slam showdown, which starts August 24. France's Alize Cornet moves into the first alternate spot for the main draw.

Ter Stegen responds after Barcelona strips him of captaincy
"In recent weeks, many things have been said about me - some of them entirely unfounded," he wrote on Instagram. "Therefore, I feel it is necessary to express my version of events respectfully, yet clearly." The club started disciplinary action on Tuesday and stripped the German of the club captaincy on Thursday. The dispute centres on the German's fitness after he underwent back surgery at the end of July. Local media reported earlier in the week that the 33-year-old had refused to cooperate and release his medical details so the club tried to have him classified by La Liga as a long-term injury, which would allow Barcelona to deduct part of his pay from their official wage bill. "I am fully willing to collaborate with the club's management to resolve this matter and to provide the requested authorisation," Ter Stegen wrote. With the new Liga season approaching, Barcelona are again struggling to satisfy Spanish financial fair play rules. If they cannot, they may not be able to register new players. Ter Stegen said if the club was in a financial bind, it should not blame his back problems. "I would also like to clarify that all of the club's signings and contract renewals were completed prior to my surgery," he wrote. "The decision to undergo surgery was fully approved by the club, and always with the intention of prioritising my health and long-term sporting career which of course are fully aligned with those of FCB to have myself available on the pitch as soon as possible to keep winning trophies." He added that his new surgery should not interfere with the "registration of other colleagues whom I greatly respect and look forward to share locker room with for many seasons". "My commitment to these colors remains absolute." Ter Stegen's place is under threat from one of the summer signings, 24-year-old Joan Garcia, and 35-year-old Wojciech Szczesny, the Polish veteran who has been rewarded with a contract extension for taking over during last season's Liga title-winning campaign. If the club pursues it's disciplinary action, Ter Stegen, the last remaining member of Luis Enrique's 2015 European champion team, could faces heavy penalties under La Liga regulations, including the termination of his contract.

Montreal protagonists Mboko, Osaka out of Cincinnati Open
Mboko, the 18-year-old Canadian who electrified Montreal with her run to a first WTA title, cited the wrist injury she suffered in the semi-finals while four-time Grand Slam winner Osaka blamed a "schedule change" for her absence. Cincinnati tournament officials said the pair had received byes into the second round due to their performances at the previous event. The withdrawals vaulted four lucky losers from qualifying into the first round of the main draw of the last major event prior to the August 25 start of the US Open. After defeating Osaka 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 to win the Montreal title, Mboko revealed that the swelling in her wrist had been bad enough on Thursday morning to prompt her to have an MRI exam before the evening final. "I woke up this morning, and I actually had my wrist a little bit swollen from (Wednesday's) fall," she said. "We quickly went to the hospital for an MRI and an X-ray before I came to the courts to practice." Mboko said she and her team eventually "got the green light that nothing too serious was going on in the wrist." But she said Thursday night that she expected to give Cincinnati a miss. "I'm not planning on playing Cincinnati at the moment. I just want to take care of my wrist a little bit right now," she said. "It's just very close and sudden for me to go there and play again (in), like, two days. "I think I'm just going to sit out on that one and prepare for the upcoming tournaments." Osaka was less definite, but said she was "teeter-tottering".
