Longtime Las Vegas freelance writer is found dead in a container, police say
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The remains of a longtime freelance writer in Las Vegas were found last week inside a container at a downtown business, authorities said.
Las Vegas police said in a news release that they discovered the body of Matthew Kelemen, 56, on May 20 while responding to a report 'of a foul-smelling odor' coming from the container.
Kelemen's cause and manner of death were still under investigation, the coroner's office in Las Vegas said Tuesday.
Police said they identified Kelemen's 63-year-old roommate as the suspect in his death. But the suspect died last week after crashing during a high-speed car chase involving the Utah Highway Patrol, police said.
The car chase was unrelated to the investigation into Kelemen's death, police said, but the department didn't further elaborate in its news release. It also hasn't identified the type of business where Kelemen's body was found or a possible motive.
Kelemen's sister, Mikki Zaferatos, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that her brother had been planning to move out of the room he was renting in a house also occupied by the suspect.
Zaferatos said her brother 'was really uneasy living there' and that he had described his roommate as 'strange.'
For two decades, Kelemen contributed film reviews, profiles, feature stories and more to local publications, including Las Vegas Weekly. A short story he wrote about Donny Osmond's Strip residency published over the weekend in Las Vegas Magazine.
Kelemen moved to Las Vegas in 2003 and had been a staff writer for several years at the now-defunct 944 and City Life magazines, the Review-Journal reported.

PAWSibilities Animal Rescue, located in Skippack Village, has been a safe haven for farm animals and stray cats for years. But earlier this week, a fire swept through their property, destroying their barn and tragically killing more than a dozen cats. Since then, volunteers have been working tirelessly, scouring the area for at least six cats who have yet to be found. They're asking neighbors to keep an eye out and to report any sightings immediately. Despite the heartbreak, the shelter is finding comfort in community support. This Saturday, June 7, PAWSibilities will host a Vigil and Open House from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Paws Adoption Center, at 4045 Skippack Pike. The event is a chance for animal lovers and supporters to come together, reflect, and help the nonprofit take steps toward rebuilding. In addition to the vigil, the shelter calls on the public to help replenish much-needed supplies. A SignUpGenius list outlines specific items the rescue hopes to collect, including cat food, litter, paper towels, and cleaning supplies. Those unable to attend the vigil are still encouraged to donate, share the wishlist, or volunteer. For more information, visit PAWSibilities Animal Rescue on Facebook.

Milford students relieved classmate was released from ICE custody, worried about his future
Many people in the town of Milford, Massachusetts are overjoyed that 18-year-old Marcelo Gomes da Silva is out of ICE custody, but they now worry about what's next. "How can a community after going through such a heartbreak go back to fully normal," a classmate said. Milford High School students are still reflecting on what happened to their classmate, who made a triumphant return home Thursday after six days in ICE detention. "Everyone is just really happy that he's back," said classmate Keira Murphy. "It's great to see that he's come home, we were all really worried about him." And they still worry for the teen who described horrendous conditions in the Burlington ICE facility he shared with several older men. It was where he was released after posting $2,000 bail helped by community donations. "Nobody should be in here," Gomes da Silva said. "Most people in there are all workers. They all got caught going to work. These people have families." Wants to help others being detained And while they shared only crackers together, it was Marcelo who translated papers for other detainees, deportation papers and a family friend says he wants to make sure their stories are told as much as his. "He really wants to make sure that he does right by those people that he was detained with, and he says over and over again, I need people to understand what those people were facing," said family friend Colleen Greco. A day after cheers and hugs outside his Milford home Thursday, a different scene of a family remaining out of sight in the quiet, still uncertain what the future will hold. One friend who expressed concern did not want to be identified. "Especially for his dad, since they have been talking about him a lot. I don't want nothing to happen to his family," Marcelo's friend said. ICE claimed it was the father they were after when they took Marcelo into custody last Saturday as he headed to volleyball practice. He tells WBZ-TV it has been an overwhelming experience, but friends say his strength is remarkable. "He is still traumatized, right, but he's not angry he is just full of gratitude for all the support all the outreach, all the love," Greco said. Marcelo will finish up the school year, including final exams, at his home.
