The 6-4, 6-3 scoreline, however, belies the struggles Alcaraz faced. The first came in the opening set when Zverev found the antidote to his cross-court game, leaving him trailing 2-3 before a late surge helped him regain the lead. The second came at the start of the second set, when Alcaraz committed four double faults in the second game—three of them consecutively—handing the German an early advantage.
The sight left Alcaraz frozen in shock as he walked to his bench during the change of play. His expression quickly went viral on social media.
Zverev, however, failed to capitalize on the advantage as he began feeling unwell and took a medical timeout off court after the third game of the second set.
Zverev, who has retired in only two matches since 2014, returned to finish what was a patchy match from Alcaraz, who had double-faulted four times in the second game of the second set but won the last 12 points with Zverev running on fumes.
'We started well with good rallies, a good level,' Alcaraz said. 'All of a sudden he felt bad, and I was thinking more about how he was feeling instead of playing good tennis. It was tough, and I just wish him all the best.'
Alcaraz will next face rival Jannik Sinner, and the Spaniard admitted he is keen to take his Wimbledon revenge in Monday's unorthodox final.
'We always bring our best tennis. We raise each other's level. I'm ready to take the challenge,' Alcaraz said. 'I will try to adjust my game better and correct what I did wrong in our last match. I want to be ready with my 100%. Mentally, I'll be ready — I'm excited for Monday.'

Iga Swiatek reached the final of the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Open for the first time on Sunday, surging past Elena Rybakina 7-5, 6-3 to book a title clash with Jasmine Paolini. The six-time Grand Slam champion earned a Monday evening final against an opponent with nothing to lose after Paolini managed to "forget" a patch of bad form to claim a 6-3, 6-7 (2/7), 6-3 win over Russian Veronika Kudermetova. The 29-year-old, who was a two-time Grand Slam finalist in 2024, will bid for the fourth title of her career when she faces Swiatek, who is set to compete in her 13th final at the 1000 level as she closes in on a return to world number two. Third seed Iga Swiatek beat Elena Rybakina 7-5, 6-3 on Sunday to reach her first Cincinnati Open final. The Pole had her hands full in the early stages of the 98-minute match but took advantage of a sudden dip in Rybakina's form to win four consecutive games and wrap up the first set before easing through the second. 'That was a tough match. At the beginning the level was pretty crazy, we played so fast that sometimes we couldn't even run to the second ball because we played so fast,' Swiatek said during her on-court interview. 'But I was there to play with intensity and good quality and I am super happy with the performance. I served much better so for sure it helped and I wouldn't change anything.' Ninth seed Rybakina used a cross-court forehand that caught the line for a break and then held for a 5-3 lead in the first set but a laser-focused Swiatek came back from the precipice and attacked the Kazakh's serve to draw level at 5-5.
