Carlos Alcaraz frozen after 4 double faults in a game; fans roar: ‘Face card so hard, service so bad'

Hindustan Times20 hours ago
Carlos Alcaraz reached his second final at the Cincinnati Open on Saturday after defeating Alexander Zverev in the semifinal. It also marked the seventh consecutive time he reached an ATP Tour final, increasing his season match win total to 53 in a year that already included five titles. Carlos Alcaraz produced 4 double faults in a game
The 6-4, 6-3 scoreline, however, belies the struggles Alcaraz faced. The first came in the opening set when Zverev found the antidote to his cross-court game, leaving him trailing 2-3 before a late surge helped him regain the lead. The second came at the start of the second set, when Alcaraz committed four double faults in the second game—three of them consecutively—handing the German an early advantage.
The sight left Alcaraz frozen in shock as he walked to his bench during the change of play. His expression quickly went viral on social media.
Zverev, however, failed to capitalize on the advantage as he began feeling unwell and took a medical timeout off court after the third game of the second set.
Zverev, who has retired in only two matches since 2014, returned to finish what was a patchy match from Alcaraz, who had double-faulted four times in the second game of the second set but won the last 12 points with Zverev running on fumes.
'We started well with good rallies, a good level,' Alcaraz said. 'All of a sudden he felt bad, and I was thinking more about how he was feeling instead of playing good tennis. It was tough, and I just wish him all the best.'
Alcaraz will next face rival Jannik Sinner, and the Spaniard admitted he is keen to take his Wimbledon revenge in Monday's unorthodox final.
'We always bring our best tennis. We raise each other's level. I'm ready to take the challenge,' Alcaraz said. 'I will try to adjust my game better and correct what I did wrong in our last match. I want to be ready with my 100%. Mentally, I'll be ready — I'm excited for Monday.'

Carlos Alcaraz-Emma Raducanu land top seeds in first round as US Open mixed doubles draw throws up blockbuster

The US Open 2025 threw up a blockbuster clash, as Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz will face the No. 1-seeded team in the first round. The draw was conducted on Sunday, and the two-day event, which pays $1 million to the winning team, will begin on Tuesday. Emma Raducanu-Carlos Alcaraz to face top seeds in US Open mixed doubles Alcaraz and Raducanu, both former US Open singles champions, have generated huge hype around their pairing, even sparking media and fan speculation about a possible romance. They will face the top-seeded duo of Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper, who earned the No. 1 seeding based on the lowest combined singles rankings. Jannik Sinner, the ATP world No. 1, has also found a new partner in 10-time women's doubles major champion Katerina Siniakova. He was earlier slated to team up with Emma Navarro, who withdrew to play the women's tournament in Monterrey, Mexico, next week. Sinner and Siniakova, who received one of the eight wild cards, will open against Alexander Zverev and Belinda Bencic. Both Alcaraz and Sinner head into the mixed doubles after a gruelling week in Cincinnati. They are scheduled to meet in Monday's singles final before a quick turnaround to their openers in New York. Iga Swiatek, despite also reaching the Cincinnati final after beating Elena Rybakina, will feature in the revamped US Open fixture alongside Casper Ruud. However, Jasmine Paolini, who was to partner fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti, withdrew from the event. Other notable pairings added on Sunday include two-time US Open women's champion Naomi Osaka with Gael Monfils, Karolina Muchova with Andrey Rublev, and Caty McNally with Lorenzo Musetti. The event will comprise four rounds. The first two rounds will be played on Tuesday, with the semifinals and final scheduled for Wednesday night. Iga Swiatek Swamps Elena Rybakina, To Face Jasmine Paolini In Cincinnati Final

Iga Swiatek reached the final of the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Open for the first time on Sunday, surging past Elena Rybakina 7-5, 6-3 to book a title clash with Jasmine Paolini. The six-time Grand Slam champion earned a Monday evening final against an opponent with nothing to lose after Paolini managed to "forget" a patch of bad form to claim a 6-3, 6-7 (2/7), 6-3 win over Russian Veronika Kudermetova. The 29-year-old, who was a two-time Grand Slam finalist in 2024, will bid for the fourth title of her career when she faces Swiatek, who is set to compete in her 13th final at the 1000 level as she closes in on a return to world number two. Swiatek, the reigning Wimbledon champion, recovered an early break in the opening set and powered away to beat 2022 All England winner Rybakina -- who had swept past world number one and defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in the quarter-finals. The former world number one from Poland now ranked third, had twice stalled at the semi-final stage at the pre-US Open event, but booked her title chance on her third opportunity. "It was a great match, and at the beginning, I was even surprised that I'm able to keep up with the pace, because we played so fast," Swiatek said. "I wanted to be there when Elena starts making mistakes. It's impossible to play such a good level throughout the whole match." Swiatek recovered from 3-5 down in the opening set, sweeping the last four games. She jumped to a 4-1 lead in the second, sandwiching a pair of love service games around a break of Rybakina's serve. But Kazakhstan's Rybakina made her work for it, fending off three break points in the sixth game and saving a pair of match points in the eighth before Swiatek closed it out a game later. "I was playing with intensity and quality," Swiatek said. "I feel good about my game right now and would not change anything." Swiatek has beaten Paolini in all five of their prior meetings with the Italian winning just one set. But Swiatek said she was prepared for a tough final against a player who beat world number two Coco Gauff in the quarter-finals. "Anyone who is there will have been playing well," she said. 'Keep fighting' Before her 6-0, 6-0 Wimbledon final win over Amanda Anisimova last month, Swiatek had been in a trophy drought with her last prior title coming in June 2024 at Roland Garros. Another victory on Monday would be a strong springboard into the US Open, where first-round play starts on August 24. Paolini looked headed to a straight-set victory but failed to serve out her match at 5-4 in the second set and admitted the lapse left her nervous. "The key was to forget, get back into the fight and stay in the present," Paolini said after wrapping up the win in two and a quarter hours. "I was fighting in the second set and all was fine. But I got nervous and thought I would lose the tiebreaker. "I came back onto court in the third set trying not to think about what had happened. You have to keep going."

Cincinnati Open 2025: Swiatek downs Rybakina to reach maiden Cincinnati final

Third seed Iga Swiatek beat Elena Rybakina 7-5, 6-3 on Sunday to reach her first Cincinnati Open final. The Pole had her hands full in the early stages of the 98-minute match but took advantage of a sudden dip in Rybakina's form to win four consecutive games and wrap up the first set before easing through the second. 'That was a tough match. At the beginning the level was pretty crazy, we played so fast that sometimes we couldn't even run to the second ball because we played so fast,' Swiatek said during her on-court interview. 'But I was there to play with intensity and good quality and I am super happy with the performance. I served much better so for sure it helped and I wouldn't change anything.' Ninth seed Rybakina used a cross-court forehand that caught the line for a break and then held for a 5-3 lead in the first set but a laser-focused Swiatek came back from the precipice and attacked the Kazakh's serve to draw level at 5-5. From there, the Wimbledon champion held serve before wrapping up the opener when she broke for a second time after a Rybakina backhand attempt came up well short. Swiatek faced some push-back from Rybakina three games later but dug deep to recover from 15-40 down to protect her serve and reach 5-2 before wrapping it up on serve when Rybakina sent a forehand return long. Swiatek, who has not lost a set in Cincinnati, will next face the winner of Sunday's other semi-final between seventh seed Jasmine Paolini and Veronika Kudermetova.
