What is sleep tourism and why is it on the rise?
Scrolling through social media over a morning coffee, you're just as likely to see someone sharing their sleep tracker data as a sunrise yoga session or breakfast smoothie. Amid the so-called sleep epidemic — in the UK, 74% of adults report sleeping badly, and research suggests that 5-7% are seeing their GP to complain about fatigue — a solid eight-hour sleep has become a sought-after luxury and something we're all keen to shout about. With travel and wellbeing so intrinsically interconnected, it's no wonder our collective desire for a successful snooze has driven a new and booming category of travel: sleep tourism.
Sleep tourism is a burgeoning area of travel where getting a good night's kip is the number-one priority. While hotels have long boasted about their ability to offer just this, sleep tourism is far more than high thread count sheets and extensive pillow menus. It's all about creating a travel experience where improving sleep is at the core, whether that's a week-long, one-off retreat to learn the art of sleeping well, a medical-led stay where issues are diagnosed and treated or a relaxing break with daily sleep-inducing spa treatments. Most notably, it's a trend that's here to stay. In fact, a 2024 report by HTF Market Intelligence found the worldwide sector is worth more than $690bn (£544bn) and is forecast to grow by another $400bn (£315bn) between 2024 and 2028.
The growth comes as part of a wider shift towards viewing health from a 360-degree perspective. 'People have long been looking at their diet and physical health via fitness, but the next chapter is sleep,' explains Charlie Morley, a sleep and dream expert who has written four books on the topic. Morley has partnered with a number of hotels on sleep and dream programmes including Nômade in Tulum, Mexico and Kimpton Fitzroy in London. 'Hotels have realised that people are using these trips, where they're away from work or their children, as a chance to really prioritise good sleep,' Morley adds.
Within this ever-evolving category of travel, approaches vary hugely. On one end of the spectrum, the rise in medicine-led spas is paving the way for science-backed programmes that aim to get to the bottom of ongoing and life-impacting issues. Take the medical spa, SHA Wellness Clinic in Andalucia, Spain, where in-house sleep medicine specialist Dr Vicente Mera creates the clinic's Sleep Well package for guests who have difficulty falling asleep, suffer with interrupted sleep or don't feel properly rested upon waking.
'We conduct a thorough assessment to identify issues such as snoring, nocturnal movements or breathing difficulties. This includes examining the airways, heart and neurological system,' Dr Mera explains. From this, the team create a personalised treatment plan that includes lifestyle modifications, dietary adjustments, supplements and therapies like CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) for sleep apnea or phototherapy to improve the body's response to light. 'Our goal is to gradually restore natural, restorative sleep and energy levels,' she adds.
Expert-led approaches are being adopted around the world, with sleep experts being brought in to up the ante on in-house wellbeing programmes. Longueville Manor in Jersey partnered with psychotherapist and sleep specialist Lydia Falle to create a Sleep Easy experience for guests, while Post Ranch Inn in California's Big Sur collaborated with 'The Sleep Doctor', Dr Michael Breus, one of the US's most renowned sleep experts.
Other destinations take a more holistic approach. The Maldives may be synonymous with a relaxing break, but at Soneva's locations (Jani and Fushi), guests can sign up for the Soneva Soul Sleep Programme for either seven or 14 days. 'Many guests arrive from fast-paced environments where their sleep patterns are frequently disrupted. They crave an experience that contrasts completely with the chaos they're used to,' Dr Lilly-Marie Blecher, chief medical officer at Soneva, explains.
The 360 approach encompasses nervous system rebalancing via mindfulness and meditation practices, daily movement through yoga and exercise classes and personalised sleep rituals such as herbal baths. Alongside this, guests are encouraged to prioritise morning sunshine to reset their circadian rhythm and barefoot walking to balance their body's electromagnetic field.
In a similar vein, many hotels are leaning on ancient wisdom to enhance sleep. At Lefay Resort & Spa's five-night sleep programme in Lake Garda, Italy, traditional Chinese medicine treatments focus on stimulating specific acupuncture points while Sri Lanka's Santani Wellness Kandy offers ayurvedic sleep treatments as part of its five-night programme.
While there is a correlation between our reliance on technology and its impact on our ability to sleep, developments in this area are simultaneously driving interesting innovation. For example, Charlie Morley's latest collaboration with Kimpton Fitzroy saw him design a Room To Dream package, which gives guests a chance to experience lucid dreaming with the help of AI. The art of being conscious of your dreams is induced by Morley's guided meditation via a VR headset and a specific herbal tea. In the morning, guests can then send the description of their dream to an AI artist, who subsequently creates a visual interpretation of it.
Looking to the future, Morley sees technology expanding the possibilities of sleep tourism, not just in terms of dreams, but for sleep quality, too. 'The gamification of sleep will continue to grow and this will be maximised by the travel industry with innovations like smart beds. These types of bed will be able to measure the quality of your sleep, allowing you to see what tools or techniques work for you,' Morley says. 'Soon, hotels really will be able to back up their claims of offering a great night's sleep with some pretty solid data.' In the meantime, our quest for deep rest and sound sleep will continue to be one of the key reasons travellers book a break.

A new generation of well-travelled chefs is adding international flavours to Estonian cuisine, which traditionally blends Russian, German and Nordic influences. The country's distinct seasons shape a deeply cyclical menu that centres on locally sourced produce. Fermentation is crucial in preserving food during long winters, while the forests, lakes and waterways fanning out from the Estonian city provide prized ingredients like pike from Lake Peipus, venison, foraged berries and mushrooms, along with trout from the Baltic Sea. 1. Kurze at The Kurze Housed in three shipping containers by the railyards, The Kurze feels like a rustic cabin, with mismatched furniture and homemade lemonade served in enamel cups. The kurze themselves — ridge-sealed dumplings from the Russian republic of Dagestan — are the stars of the menu. Founder Nuriyan Navruzova, a former journalist who fled her home there during the Second Chechen War, began selling them in 2018. Demand exploded and now her cosy restaurant offers five varieties — lamb, beef, potato, pumpkin and cheese, all coloured with vegetable dyes for a photogenic touch and served with a tomato dip. 2. Chanterelle hummus at Barbarea Chef Kenneth Karjane leads the kitchen in Barbarea, a repurposed boot factory in the up-and-coming Kopli district. Hummus is always on the menu, but made with seasonal ingredients rather than chickpeas. In warmer months, that means chanterelles from the boundless Estonian forests, blended silky smooth with tahini and spices, topped with roasted mushrooms, dill and black pepper oil. Served with sourdough pitta from the onsite bakery, 'it tastes like Estonian summer,' according to Karjane. 3. Reuben sandwich at Sai! Sai!, Tallinn's go-to spot for sandwiches, is located in a cellar overlooked by a portrait of former president Lennart Meri. Owner Daanius Aas, winner of the Michelin Young Chef Award in 2023, takes inspiration from the late-night cravings he gets after work. His take on the classic reuben respects the original but features local produce: tender Estonian brisket pastrami, sauerkraut from a local farm and marble rye bread made in a Tallinn bakery. It's best enjoyed with a side of fried pickles, and is a budget-friendly favourite with students and homesick Americans. 4. Fish soup at Lore Bistroo In summer, Estonians typically crave two things: sea views and a bowl of fish soup. At Lore Bistroo — in the Noblessner district, where submarines were built in tsarist times — both things are in abundance. It's a surprising rarity in Tallinn, a maritime city with few waterfront dining spots. Chef Janno Leppik's fish soup is a classic island-style dish, made with fresh trout from the Baltic waters around Saaremaa island, along with cod and garden vegetables, generously sprinkled with the national obsession: dill. It's light yet comforting, bringing loyal locals from all over town. 5. Cauliflower at Rado Rado has a refreshingly straightforward chalkboard menu, listing dishes in single words — picanha (beef), tuna, cauliflower — but the flavours are far from simple. Slovakian chef Radoslav Mitro honours his mother's cooking with the cauliflower offering: a boiled piece of the brasscia, generously coated in parmesan sauce with thyme, then crowned with grated parmesan. It's so beloved the patrons won't let Mitro take it off the menu, no matter how many times the rest of the chalkboard changes. 6. Kouign-amann at Sumi Estonians have always had a soft spot for pastries, and now French bakeries are popping up all over town. The latest darling for the sweet-toothed is Sumi in North Tallinn, where American pastry chef Hannah Holman creates a tempting array of hand-crafted treats. The kouign-amann is a crowd-pleaser, the idea drawn from vintage Breton cookbooks from her grandmother's generation — a golden pastry made from leftover baguette dough, laminated with butter and sugar in the last two folds. The resulting rich flavours belie the simplicity of the ingredients and it's a crisp, yet melt-in-your-mouth delight. Experience a slice of the Italian Riviera in this Welsh village

It's a fairytale folly of pastel cottages, soaring spires and classical statuary; a slice of the Italian Riviera on the north Welsh coast. The passion project of amateur architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, Portmeirion was built in stages between 1925 and 1975 — not for residents but as an experiment to prove that buildings could enhance, rather than spoil, nature's beauty. The result is as eclectic as it is colourful, the village's shops, cafes and restaurants reflecting baroque, gothic and Arts and Crafts influences. The setting is equally enchanting. Portmeirion sits on a cliff side overlooking the tidal estuary where the River Dwyryd meets the sea, and beautiful coastal views can be enjoyed throughout the village. Enclosing it is the Gwyllt, a woodland stocked with gargantuan, exotic trees that thrive in Portmeirion's balmy microclimate. Portmeirion has no permanent residents, with day-trippers required to depart by 6.30pm in summer and 5.30pm in winter, leaving overnight guests to amble the grounds during golden hour. Grab a drink on the Portmeirion Hotel's terrace and watch dusk cast the sandbanks and coastal caves of the Dwyryd Estuary aglow. The hotel itself is a luxurious property with an art deco feel — particularly evident in the mosaiced bathrooms and sleek bar and restaurant. There's also a heated outdoor pool. Alternatives include the looming Castell Deudraeth, a faux fortress whose crenellations shelter suites and guest rooms are decked out in local oak and slate. The cosiest options, however, are the Village Rooms and self-catering cottages scattered among Portmeirion's distinctive buildings. What's there to do in Portmeirion? Top of the list is an architectural walking tour. Fans of cult 1960s sci-fi programme The Prisoner, which was filmed in Portmeirion, will enjoy spotting locations from the series, like the towering baroque-style Campanile Bell Tower; the Dome, also known as the Pantheon, topped with an elegant cupola; and the Town Hall, with its carved ceiling depicting the labours of Hercules. Just as captivating as the village itself is the forest that surrounds it, known as Y Gwyllt Woodlands. This subtropical forest has been planted with red-flowering Himalayan rhododendrons and ginkgo trees, woven through 19 miles of footpaths. Hidden in the forest, you'll find a serene Japanese Garden and a dog cemetery, a resting place for beloved canine companions originally created by Adelaide Haig, who lived here before Portmeirion was built, on the Victorian estate of Aber Iâ. Beyond the village and the woods, the Dwyryd Estuary is a lovely place for a walk, with shifting sandbanks and a golden beach. Note that strong currents mean it's best not to swim here. The village's flagship restaurant is The Dining Room at the Portmeirion Hotel, open for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Welsh lamb is often on the menu, as is laverbread, a coastal classic made from foraged seaweed. The Dining Room overlooks the estuary and sits adjacent to the stone boat Amis Reunis, a Portmeirion landmark created by Williams-Ellis. It's a replica of his own wooden vessel, a trading ketch which was stranded on an offshore sandbank. The other main restaurant is the Brasserie at Castell Deudraeth, at the entrance to the village. This has a more casual feel, but a menu with a similar fusion of European and Welsh influences — highlights include aged Bala beef and succulent Anglesey oysters, while chalk stream trout is served en croute and local mussels are used for moules frites. You'll find more informal options in the form of Caffi Glas Italian cafe and Caffi'r Angel gelato shop. The salted caramel is superb. Its beautifully preserved cars — built variously between 1910 and the 1950s — take passengers past handsome baroque buildings, the gleaming windows of 19th-century Porta Nuova station and the Renaissance-era Duomo. Settle in for the full loop, around an hour, or hop on and off for gallery visits and pit stops at art nouveau cafes — its circular route is perfect for laid-back sightseeing and a bargain, too, priced the same as a standard Turin transport ticket. Tickets from €1.90 (£1.60). Matera by luxury train In April, Orient Express launched its La Dolce Vita service, putting Italy at the forefront of a new age in luxury rail travel. Effectively a high-end boutique hotel on tracks, its seven passenger carriages are replete with nods to mid-century Italian design, from polished metallics to exquisite fabrics in juicy hues. Kick back in the dining car — order a negroni or a dish from a menu designed by lauded chef Heinz Beck — while watching the scenery slip by on the way to the mountaintop, UNESCO-listed city of Matera, home to ancient cave dwellings cut from tufa stone. Emilia-Romagna by Ferrari This region is famously the home of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, Parma ham and balsamic vinegar — unless you're a petrolhead, in which case you'll know it as the birthplace of the Ferrari. Supercar fans flock to the city of Maranello to visit the official Ferrari Museum (€27/£23), while 12 miles north is the Autodromo di Modena (two laps from €704/£607) circuit, where you can get behind the wheel yourself. Even better is the chance to test drive a Ferrari in the Modena Apennines, feeling the guttural roar of the engine as you tackle hair-raising hairpins and pass forested hamlets in a blur. 10km (just over six miles) test drive from €190 (£163). Capri by yacht Beloved by a 1960s jet set that included Grace Kelly and Sophia Loren, the sunny island of Capri — off the southerly Amalfi and Sorrento Coasts — has long been a byword for glamour. Its rugged coastline and hidden caves, framed by glittering waters in variegated blues and greens, are best explored by yacht — but you needn't be in possession of an A-list budget. Aosta Valley by cable car Floating above the plunging valleys, Alpine meadows and ashen peaks of the Aosta Valley, Skyway Monte Bianco sets out from Courmayeur to ferry visitors to Italy's highest accessible point — Punta Helbronner, an eye-watering 11,370ft above sea level — and views to the snow-capped summit of Mont Blanc, just over the French border. On your way back, stop at the halfway Pavilion station to visit boundary-pushing Cave Mont Blanc, home to some of Europe's highest vineyards and an experimental high-altitude winery.
