Children hurt as fairground car crashes off ride

Yahoo12-05-2025
A funfair in Edinburgh has closed early after three children were injured when part of a ride came loose and crashed into a speaker.
Operators of the Galactic Carnival at Westside Plaza in Wester Hailes said they had taken the decision to shutter the attraction following the incident on the waltzer ride on Saturday evening.
The children, aged seven, 12 and 13, were taken to hospital for treatment on minor injuries but were subsequently released.
Police Scotland and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are investigating.
The children's father said the ride was going at "full pelt" when the car carrying the siblings detached.
He said the carriage crashed against the one behind, which he was in, before going off the side of the track and colliding with a large speaker.
He said: "Thankfully there was a heavy, large speaker that they collided with or they would have been through the whole thing and then the ending would have been a different story, a thought I can't stop thinking about."
Galactic Carnival apologised to the family involved and said the event would be "closed to assist in any investigation".
The said all rides underwent "extensive safety testing" and were inspected by the Amusement Device Inspection Procedures Scheme (ADIPS).
They said: "We are truly sorry for the distress caused by the incident at our event. Public safety at our events has always been, and continues to be, our top priority.
"This incident is now being investigated by third party inspection bodies and the HSE.
"We have decided to close the event to allow for investigation to take place."
Tickets for future dates will be refunded automatically.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said inquiries were ongoing.
In a statement, the HSE added: "HSE is aware of the incident and making inquiries."

Cops announce 'police plan' for Kneecap gig in Glasgow

Police Scotland has announced that they have a plan in place to ensure the safety of anyone attending the Kneecap concert in Glasgow this week. The controversial rap group are due to perform at the Glasgow O2 Academy tomorrow night, July 7. Cops had previously expressed concern about Kneecap playing at the TRNSMT festival in Glasgow Green this weekend and they were taken taken off the bill. They said: "To the thousands of people who bought tickets, flights, and hotels to see us play, we are sorry ... it is out of our hands. "Glasgow has always been a huge city for us. We've played there many, many times, with no issues – ever. "Make of that what you will. To try to make up for it, we will be at your O2 Academy on Tuesday, July 8." Police confirmed they have launched a probe following Kneecap's set at Glastonbury was filled with expletives and calls to "free Palestine" and "f*** Keir Starmer." Police Scotland say there are a number of artists playing in the city this week and confirmed they have a plan in place for them all. Superintendent Paul Douglas said: 'We are aware of a number of events and concerts due to take place in the Greater Glasgow area in the week beginning Monday, 7 July, 2025. 'A proportionate and considered policing plan is in place within the city and we are working with a number of stakeholders to ensure the safety of all those attending these events and where possible minimise disruption to the people of Glasgow.' Billie Eilish's "Hit Me Hard and Soft" tour at the Hydro comes to Glasgow for the next two nights, while Kendrick Lamar and SZA's "Grand National Tour" at Hampden will be on at the same time as the Kneecap gig tomorrow.

Police have ‘proportionate and considered' plan ahead of Glasgow Kneecap gig

Police Scotland say they have a 'proportionate and considered policing plan' ahead of Kneecap's gig in Glasgow, which replaces their cancelled slot at the TRNSMT festival. Kneecap were axed from the line-up of TRNSMT in the city amid a row over an investigation by counter-terror police into rapper Mo Chara, who is accused of terrorism offences related to a Hezbollah flag he allegedly held up on stage. The satirical Belfast rap group, who perform in Irish, have been outspoken critics of the war in Gaza and said the prosecution – following an investigation by the Met Police – is linked to their views on Palestine. TRNSMT cancelled Kneecap's performance at the end of May over safety concerns by Police Scotland. On Tuesday, they are set to perform a sold-out gig at the O2 Academy in Glasgow, days before TRNSMT begins on Friday. As well as Kneecap, Billie Eilish and Kendrick Lamar are also performing in Glasgow on Tuesday. Police Scotland say they will aim to minimise disruption in the city. In May, First Minister John Swinney urged for TRNSMT to cancel the performance on July 11, saying that 'organisers of TRNSMT have got to consider that issue.' Mo Chara, also known as Liam Og O hAnnaidh was charged under the name Liam O'Hanna by the Metropolitan Police in May, over the alleged display of a Hezbollah flag at a gig, and appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on June 18. The furore led to calls from Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch for Glastonbury to cancel a performance from the Belfast rappers on June 28, which the festival organisers did not do. Despite being cancelled from TRNSMT, Kneecap are still due to perform scheduled shows at 2000trees rock festival on July 10, Wythenshawe Park in Manchester on August 15 and Belfast Vital on August 29 – nine days after O hAnnaidh's next court appearance. At the last hearing, prosecutor Michael Bisgrove said: 'It's not about Mr O hAnnaidh's support for the people of Palestine or his criticism of Israel. 'He's well within his rights to voice his opinions and solidarity, as is anybody else. 'The allegation in this case is a wholly different thing and deals with a video recording showing that, in November of last year, Mr O hAnnaidh wore and displayed the flag of Hezbollah, a proscribed terrorist organisation, while saying 'up Hamas, up Hezbollah'.' Kneecap have said they have 'never supported' Hamas or Hezbollah, which are banned in the UK. Superintendent Paul Douglas said: 'We are aware of a number of events and concerts due to take place in the Greater Glasgow area in the week beginning Monday July 7 2025. 'A proportionate and considered policing plan is in place within the city and we are working with a number of stakeholders to ensure the safety of all those attending these events and where possible minimise disruption to the people of Glasgow.'
