#SHOWBIZ: Maher Zain to return to Malaysia after six years
PETALING JAYA: After a six-year hiatus from Malaysia, internationally renowned Swedish-Lebanese singer Maher Zain, 43, is set to return for his highly anticipated 2025 Southeast Asia Tour, with concerts scheduled in both Malaysia and Singapore this August.
Speaking via video conference to reporters gathered at a press conference held at Ruang Ruma, Maher expressed his excitement about performing once again for his Southeast Asian fans.
"It's been six years since I last visited Malaysia, and thank God, I'll be returning this August for the 2025 Southeast Asia Tour," he said.
"I'm truly happy and excited to reconnect with fans in Malaysia and Singapore through my music – songs that I hope still resonate with many. Thank you to all my fans for your continued support."
Currently based in Turkiye, Maher also touched on his Malay-speaking skills, admitting that he needs some practice after such a long absence.
"I need to relearn and practise my Malay because it's been a while. But God willing, I'll pick it up again in the next two months," said the singer, who has several songs recorded in Malay.
"It's important for me to speak Malay when I'm in Malaysia; it's a way of connecting with the audience. I just hope all preparations go smoothly."
Maher rose to prominence in Malaysia through his spiritually inspired songs such as 'Insya Allah', 'Thank You Allah', 'The Chosen One', and 'Palestine Will Be Free', all featured on his 2009 debut album.
His last performance in Malaysia was during the Maher Zain Malaysia Tour 2019, with shows at major venues including Axiata Arena Bukit Jalil, Pasir Gudang (Johor), SPICE Arena (Penang), and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

#SHOWBIZ: Sofyank teams up with HK superstar Louis Koo in viral promo
KUALA LUMPUR: A surprise collaboration between Hong Kong screen legend Louis Koo and Malaysia's very own VFX prodigy Sofyank has taken local social media by storm, following the release of a promotional video for Koo's film Behind The Shadow. The impressive 50-second spot racked up over a million views in just 12 hours, and for Sofyank, the experience was surreal. "Louis is one of the first Hong Kong actors I've ever worked with. I grew up watching his movies — to now share the screen with him feels like a dream come true," shared Sofyank. Despite Koo's packed schedule, the video shoot was completed in 20 minutes. "He looked really serious at first, but he was incredibly down-to-earth. In fact, it was he who suggested some comedic moments — including the popcorn bit," added Sofyank. The video features Sofyank walking through a cinema hallway holding popcorn, before accidentally bumping into a crowd and dropping it. Koo "steps out" of a movie poster and hands him a fresh box — while dropping some Bahasa Malaysia lines in his Cantonese-accented voice: "Jom sapot!" (Let's support!). Netizens praised their pairing as refreshing and heartwarming. "We asked Louis if he'd be willing to try speaking in Malay, even though it's not a language he's familiar with — and he was totally up for it," said Sofyank. Behind The Shadow was shot entirely in Malaysia, with a cast and crew of nearly 100 local talents. Koo previously shared his admiration for Malaysia's film industry, noting its professionalism, quick pace and strong creative energy. "I was impressed by how committed and responsive the Malaysian crew were. It was great to see how they handled spontaneous scenes so well," he said. Sofyank said: "This film proves that it's not just Western studios, but also those in Asia, that now recognise Malaysia's potential. I hope to bring Malaysian creativity to the global stage. And I'm thrilled to see more international filmmakers acknowledging our local talent." Behind The Shadow stars Koo as a detective entangled in a mysterious crime filled with suspense and unexpected turns. The film is set in recognisable Malaysian locations — from bustling night markets and food courts to schools, pedestrian bridges and urban backstreets. Behind The Shadow officially opens in cinemas today.

Multi-platinum singer Maher Zain returns to Malaysia with two shows in August — but first, a BM refresher
KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Swedish-Lebanese Islamic singer Maher Zain has expressed his excitement about returning to Malaysia for not just one, but two shows as part of his 2025 South-east Asia Tour. It has been six years since his last tour around Malaysia in 2019, when tickets sold out across four cities within minutes. Known for his uplifting music and messages of hope, unity, and faith, Maher will serenade fans this August 16 at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil, followed by another show on August 23 at Universiti Malaysia Sabah Chancellor's Hall in Kota Kinabalu. Before the Sabah concert, the multi-platinum artist will also perform at The Star Theatre in Singapore on August 21. Return to Malaysia Speaking to local media via an online session during his South-east Asia Tour press conference yesterday, Maher shared his excitement about returning to Malaysia — a country he described as an 'exceptionally important chapter' in his career. Malaysia was among the first countries to embrace him and his music — so much so that his 2009 debut album Thank You Allah went multi-platinum in both Malaysia and Indonesia. 'I'm so happy and I'm so excited because Malaysia is always very special and dear to my heart. 'Since the beginning actually. 'It is always a pleasure to feel welcomed whenever I come to Malaysia for sure,' Maher said. With just two months before his return, the 43-year-old also mentioned that he needs to start practising his Bahasa Malaysia (BM). 'Please don't ask me to sing or speak in BM right now because I need to work on it a little bit. I need to refresh my memory,' he joked during the press conference. Over the course of his career, Maher has released an extensive discography, which includes several hit songs in BM, such as Insha Allah, Sepanjang Hidupku (For the Rest of My Life) and Ku MilikMu. Using his platform to voice out Maher, who believes music can bring people closer together, is also using his platform to speak up about the plight of Palestinians — a theme he frequently includes in his concerts. 'I always try to use my platform to speak and to raise awareness. 'We cannot forget — it's very easy to just, like, move on (from the issues), we can just turn off our phones but our brothers and sisters in Palestine, they cannot just turn off their phones and go about with their lives. 'It's the least we can do and I'm doing it in my own ways and I urge everyone, the media, writers, content creators, whoever, to keep spreading the word and speak up on what's going on there,' Maher said. He added that it's sometimes difficult for him to perform his songs of solidarity for Palestine live, as they often remind him of the situation there. Aside from his BM and solidarity songs, Maher will also perform some of his latest singles during his Malaysia shows, including Qalbi Fil Madinah, Maly Siwak, and Rahmatun Lil'Alameen. Tickets for Maher Zain's Malaysia shows are priced from RM158. They will go on sale today from 12pm for pre-registered buyers, while public sales will begin on June 13 from 12pm onwards.
