Microsoft tests aggregated gaming library for Xbox app on Windows 11: All details
Microsoft has rolled out a new feature for Xbox Insiders that brings together games from multiple PC storefronts into a single, streamlined library within the Xbox app on Windows 11.
Currently available through the PC Gaming Preview programme, the feature is being tested ahead of a broader release planned for later this year, just in time for the holiday season. It will also be available on handheld devices such as the ROG Xbox Ally and the upcoming ROG Xbox Ally X. You may be interested in
The update introduces anaggregated gaming library, allowing users to access and launch titles from a variety of platforms, including Xbox, Game Pass (membership required), Battle.net, and other major PC stores, without having to open each store's launcher separately. Once a game is installed from a supported storefront, it automatically appears in the 'My Library' section of the Xbox app. It also shows up in the 'Most Recent' sidebar, making it easier for players to resume their last sessions.
Users have the option to manage their library visibility by heading into the Xbox app's settings. From there, under 'Library & Extensions', they can choose to hide titles from specific storefronts if they do not wish to see them displayed. This level of control is designed to keep the interface clutter-free and tailored to individual preferences.
While the initial phase supports a limited number of storefronts, Microsoft has indicated that the list will expand over time. The move reflects a growing trend of consolidating digital game libraries across ecosystems to improve user experience, particularly for players who use multiple services.
Those not currently enrolled in the Xbox Insider Programme but interested in trying upcoming features can join by downloading the Xbox Insider Hub app on either Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or Windows PCs. Support and discussions are facilitated through the Xbox Insider subreddit, where users are encouraged to contribute feedback and report any issues encountered, stated Microsoft in its blog post.

OpenAI goes after Google Docs, Microsoft's Word for web with new ChatGPT features
OpenAI has developed features that let people collaborate on documents and communicate via chat in ChatGPT, The Information reported, citing two people who have seen the designs. Designs for collaboration features suggest OpenAI could even consider developing related productivity features such as file storage, the report said. These features compete with rival Google 's Docs and Word for the web by Microsoft , OpenAI's biggest shareholder and business partner. OpenAI has already eaten into traffic for Google's flagship Search, with ChatGPT becoming popular for web searches. Google recently rolled out its 'AI Mode' for Search in India, after announcing the feature during its I/O event last month. The feature employs Gemini 2.5 to improve Google search results and experience. Meanwhile, the AI major has been hurting business for Microsoft's Copilot AI with its ChatGPT Enterprise , Bloomberg reported. The two tech companies also compete for customers of AI coding assistants and AI models accessed via application programming interface (API) by more advanced developers. Notably, Microsoft's multibillion investments in OpenAI were crucial in making the latter a forerunner in the AI space. It's still not clear if OpenAI will release these features, The Information reported. But in the event it does, it will open a new front in the rivalry with Google, and further complicate its ties with Microsoft. OpenAI is trying to secure Microsoft's blessings for a restructuring plan for its for-profit unit that oversees ChatGPT. Last week, Financial Times reported that Microsoft is prepared to abandon its high-stakes negotiations with OpenAI over the future of its alliance. OpenAI says it has increasingly generated revenue from ChatGPT Team, and even offered discounts on such subscriptions recently. The company has projected roughly $15 billion in revenue from business subscriptions to ChatGPT in 2030, up from $600 million in revenue in 2024 In the works OpenAI product chief Kevin Weil and other company executives first discussed and showed off designs for the document collaboration feature nearly a year ago, the report said. Not much came of it due to workforce limitations and other priorities. The feature got a second wind in October with OpenAI's Canvas, a ChatGPT feature to draft documents and code with AI. More recently, OpenAI developed but hasn't launched software allowing multiple ChatGPT customers to communicate about their shared work in the app, The Information said. Last week, OpenAI announced the rollout of ChatGPT Record mode for ChatGPT Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users. The feature, however, has limited utility since ChatGPT doesn't offer file storage or other productivity features.

Big bets: OpenAI nabbing Microsoft customers, fuelling partners' rivalry
Last spring, drugmaker Amgen Inc. announced plans to buy Microsoft Corp's Copilot AI assistant for 20,000 employees. It was a timely endorsement of the software company's multibillion-dollar bet on generative artificial intelligence, and Microsoft touted its new Copilot customer in three separate case studies. Thirteen months later, Amgen employees are using a rival product: OpenAI's ChatGPT. Amgen expanded its use of ChatGPT earlier this year after seeing the technology improve and hearing from employees that it helped with such tasks as research and summarizing scientific documents. 'OpenAI has done a tremendous job making their product fun to use,' said Senior Vice President Sean Bruich. Copilot is still a 'pretty important tool,' he added, but more so for use with Microsoft products such as Outlook or Teams. OpenAI's nascent strength in the enterprise market is giving its partner and biggest investor indigestion. Microsoft salespeople describe being caught flatfooted at a time when they're under pressure to get Copilot into as many customers' hands as possible. The behind-the-scenes dogfight is complicating an already fraught relationship between Microsoft and OpenAI. Since investing almost $14 billion in OpenAI, Microsoft has backed rival AI startups, started building its own AI models and is balking at signing off on its partner's restructuring plan. OpenAI has inked deals with rival cloud computing partners and spent much of the past two years building out a suite of paid subscription products for businesses, schools and individuals. The startup recently agreed to acquire AI coding assistant Windsurf, which competes with Microsoft's GitHub Copilot. It's unclear whether OpenAI's momentum with corporations will continue, but the company recently said it has 3 million paying business users, a 50 per cent jump from just a few months earlier. A Microsoft spokesperson said Copilot is used by 70 per cent of the Fortune 500 and paid users have tripled compared with this time last year. Gartner analyst Jason Wong said many companies are still testing Copilot with relatively few employees, leaving room for various software vendors to win customers. But for now, he said, it's 'kind of a showdown' between OpenAI and Microsoft. This story is based on conversations with more than two dozen customers and salespeople, many of them Microsoft employees. Most of these people asked not to be named in order to speak candidly about the competition between Microsoft and OpenAI. Both companies are essentially pitching the same thing: AI assistants that can handle onerous tasks — researching and writing; analysing data — potentially letting office workers focus on thornier challenges. Since both chatbots are largely based on the same OpenAI models, Microsoft's salesforce has struggled to differentiate Copilot from the much better-known ChatGPT, according to people familiar with the situation. Asked about ChatGPT's traction, Microsoft's chief of workplace AI initiatives, Jared Spataro, said 'awareness in the consumer space doesn't necessarily translate into fit for use in the commercial space.' Microsoft's 'sweet spot,' he added, is taking the best technology available and fine-tuning it for business use. An OpenAI spokesperson said his company is benefiting from customers' desire for direct access to the latest expertise and technology. Microsoft's ubiquity should theoretically give it an advantage. The Windows operating system dominates the workplace, and the firm is baking AI into the world's most widely used suite of productivity apps.

Microsoft is offering free Windows 10 security updates till 2026, but there's a catch...
Representative Image Microsoft has announced that it will offer free Windows 10 security updates until 2026 for certain users. With this move, the tech giant is expanding options for users beyond its paid Extended Security Update (ESU) program. This move comes just a few months before the original October 14, 2025, end-of-support date for Windows 10. Users can now receive an additional year of Windows 10 security updates for free by opting into Windows Backup, an app that backs up settings and files using a Microsoft account. Alternatively, users can gain ESU updates by redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, earned through activities like Microsoft account purchases or Bing searches. While these offers do not formally extend Windows 10's official end-of-support date, they effectively provide an extra year of free updates for users. This is particularly relevant for those who prefer not to migrate to Windows 11 or whose PCs do not meet the upgrade requirements. Windows 10 remains installed on a slight majority of the world's Windows PCs, according to StatCounter data. The original ESU program, announced last fall, costs $30 per PC for one year of additional security updates. Microsoft will begin offering Windows 10 users access to its Extended Security Updates (ESU) program through system notifications and the Settings app, with testing starting now in the Insider Preview channel and full rollout expected by mid-August. Consumers can receive free security updates until October 13, 2026, while businesses and schools will need to pay for up to three years of coverage. Accessing these updates requires a Microsoft Account, part of Microsoft's broader push toward account integration and eventual migration to Windows 11. It's an easy way to help you safely and securely transfer your data, personal files, and most settings and applications, so everything's ready for you the moment you sign in.' While the free updates are a welcome option, Microsoft continues to push Windows 11 upgrades and new PC purchases, maintaining the 2025 end-of-support date for Windows 10. Windows 11 adoption is growing steadily, now surpassing Windows 10 usage in the US and among Steam gamers, signalling a shift despite earlier stagnation. However, the need to manually opt in to the ESU program may leave some less tech-savvy users unprotected. Questions remain about how enrollment works across reinstalls or multiple devices, with more details from Microsoft still awaited.
