Vietnamese, Cambodian, Lao PMs Meet For Working Breakfast At ASEAN Summit
KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 (Bernama-VNA) – Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Monday had a working breakfast with his Cambodian counterpart, Hun Manet, and his Lao counterpart, Sonexay Siphandone, on the sidelines of the 46th ASEAN Summit.
According to the Vietnam News Agency (VNA), the leaders exchanged views on areas of joint cooperation, as well as regional and international issues of shared concern.
They noted that all three countries are making efforts to overcome security, political, and socio-economic challenges arising from global and regional developments.

The prime ministers noted that bilateral and trilateral relations have seen substantial qualitative progress in recent times, adding that the three governments have promptly coordinated to implement practical cooperation plans following the meeting of the three party chiefs and other high-level engagements.
They held that various bilateral and trilateral cooperation mechanisms have proven effective, making tangible contributions to consolidating and strengthening their collaboration.
The three prime ministers affirmed that mutual trust and strategic sharing form the cornerstone of long-term, sustainable cooperation across various fields, with an emphasis placed on trilateral connectivity in such key sectors as the economy, trade, finance, education, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.
The three sides agreed to step up cooperation in developing border areas, focusing on linking the infrastructure of transport, energy, trade, digital transformation, and human resources.
They said it is necessary to optimise the efficiency of land border gates to facilitate cross-border trade and support socio-economic growth in border provinces.
The leaders also concurred to collaborate in exploring the establishment of cross-border economic zones and to review and revise existing agreements for a more enabling legal framework, in order to raise Vietnam's bilateral trade turnover with Laos to US$5 billion and with Cambodia to US$20 billion.

Ireland's Dalata Hotel rejects US$1.5bil buyout proposal from Pandox, Eiendomsspar
KUALA LUMPUR: Ireland's largest hotel group Dalata on Tuesday rejected a 1.3 billion euro (US$1.48 billion) buyout proposal from Scandinavian property companies Pandox AB and Eiendomsspar AS for "materially" undervaluing it. Dalata, which launched a strategic review in March, said Pandox was not participating in its ongoing sale process, which has drawn interest from other potential bidders. The Irish group operates 55 hotels under the Maldron Hotel and Clayton Hotel brands, mostly in Ireland and Britain, and aims to expand its portfolio to 21,000 rooms across Ireland, the UK and continental Europe under its "2030 Vision" strategy. The proposal from the groups had comprised a cash offer of 6.05 euros per ordinary share of Dalata, representing a premium of about 5 per cent to Dalata's closing price on Monday. Shares of Dalata closed up 5.2 per cent at 6.06 euros on Tuesday, their highest since May 2019. It said it continues to engage in "constructive discussions" with other parties who have submitted initial non-binding proposals, without naming who they were. The Pandox-led consortium did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the rebuff by Dalata. Under Irish takeover rules, Pandox and Eiendomsspar had until July 15 to make a formal offer for Dalata or walk away. Norway-based Eiendomsspar is the second largest shareholder in the Irish group with a stake of around 8.8 per cent and in Pandox, in which it has a stake of around 8.5 per cent. Sweden-based Pandox AB specialises in the ownership, development and leasing of large hotel assets in major cities across Sweden and northern Europe. It has been expanding its portfolio through acquisitions and leases in key European cities including Stockholm, Berlin and Brussels. Dalata's adjusted core profit rose 5.1 per cent last year to 234.5 million euros as revenue grew 7.3 per cent to 652.2 million euros, driven by additions to its portfolio over the past two years.

Cops beefing up security for Asean council meet
KUANTAN: Police will step up security ahead of next week's 2025 Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly Advisory Council On Dangerous Drugs meeting. Pahang police chief Comm Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said they are actively carrying out early preparations in terms of security so that the programme, which is scheduled to be held in Kuantan and Pekan, would proceed smoothly. 'We will ensure there are no hindrances when they hold the meeting as well as make sure everything is safe. 'If there is a need for road closures, they will be kept to a minimum and carried out in stages to ensure smooth traffic flow,' Comm Yahaya told reporters after attending an award ceremony at the Pahang police headquarters here yesterday, Bernama reported. He added that security preparations would be further improved after today's meeting with state Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin.

New MMC developments to be announced at Hawana
KUALA LUMPUR: The latest on the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) will be announced during the summit of the coming National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil ( pic ). The Communications Minister said the MMC was set up with the clear mission of defending media freedom, ensuring fair and responsible reporting, and serving as a channel for the people to air grievances against the media in a civil manner. He said the other notable achievement was when the Dewan Rakyat passed the Malaysian Media Council Bill 2024 in February. 'After more than 50 years of discussion, our country has finally succeeded in establishing the Malaysian Media Council, a self-regulatory body that brings together all types of media, including print, broadcast and digital,' he said at the Hawana 2025-Bernama Strategic Partners' Appreciation Ceremony and Official Launch of Bernama-Motorhome at Wisma Bernama here yesterday. Fahmi said with the setting up of the MMC and other initiatives, the government was laying a strong foundation for the future of the Malaysian media. Themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics', Hawana 2025 will be held at WTC KL from June 13 to 15 with the highlight of the celebration to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on June 14. More than 1,000 media practitioners, representatives of local journalist associations and media representatives from Asean member countries have been invited to bring together the professional media fraternity and industry experts while exchanging ideas and forging strategic relationships. Fahmi said the Bernama (Amendment) Act 2024 was gazetted on May 14 covering entities disseminating news via newspapers, publications, radio, TV and other mass communication platforms, including electronic and digital media. 'This amendment also aims to ensure Bernama's structure and functions are in line with developments in information and communications technology, as well as meeting the needs of the increasingly complex media industry,' he said. Meanwhile, May 29 has been gazetted as National Journalists' Day in conjunction with the publication of the first edition of Utusan Melayu newspaper that day back in 1939. At the event, Fahmi also launched the Bernama Motorhome-Mobile Studio, making it the first local media agency to utilise a recreational vehicle with mobile broadcast studio facilities that can be deployed to quickly disseminate news.
