Native treasures collected

Dunedin Botanic Garden apprentice Jess Freeman was part of a recent plant collection trip in Central Otago.
Every day at the Dunedin Botanic Garden, staff are involved in the work of plant conservation. This includes not just threatened species, but also more common ones required for public display and education.
The work also extends beyond the boundary of the garden's grounds.
In one recent trip, staff ventured into the Old Man Range, in Central Otago, to find and collect seeds and cuttings to extend the treasures nurtured in Dunedin — in this case for adding to the garden's new mini-mountain display.
There were strict guidelines for the work, set out in a Department of Conservation (Doc) authorisation, which, among other things, placed limits on the quantity and type of material that could be collected.
The team could take a limited quantity of propagation material per species on this visit. Depending on the species it was possible to collect a maximum of 10 cuttings less than 15cm long each, five divisions less than 3cm across, and up to 20 fruit per species. Actual quantities collected, details of the trip and propagation success and conservation implications were required to be reported back to Doc.
Garden apprentice Jess Freeman was part of the team on the trip and says the limits are crucial to ensure the plants can continue to regenerate and thrive in their natural habitat.
"It's great to know that while we're gathering these specimens to grow, we're also being mindful of the long-term health of the ecosystem."
The destination for the trip was the Kopuwai Conservation Area, near Alexandra, in the Old Man Range.
On the day, cloud clung close to the hills, limiting visibility. Even still, as staff made their way up the mountain, changes in the plant habitat were immediately obvious.
Having started in country dominated by tussocks swaying in the chilly morning breeze, the team ascended into a rockier landscape in which plants shrank dramatically in size.
By the time the team reached the summit, the plants were much smaller, their ground-hugging strategies perfectly adapted to the harsher conditions.
"The fog added an eerie, sci-fi movie vibe to the scene, especially as we passed rock tors and expanses of rocky soil. It was the kind of place you'd expect to find aliens or at least a cool plot twist," Freeman says.
At the top, where the 26m rock tor Kopuwai, or the Obelisk, stands, it was time to focus on the business of locating native species.
"We took our time to familiarise ourselves with the range of plants in this rocky, fog-filled wilderness. Sometimes scratching our heads, but that's part of the fun."
One of the most memorable finds was Myosotis pulvinaris , she says, which was producing its little white flowers despite the challenges of the alpine environment.
M pulvinaris , or "mountain forget-me-not," is known for its resilience, adapted for its niche in such rocky and windswept environments.
"I love how it is a little reminder that even in the toughest conditions, nature still finds a way to thrive," Freeman says.
The team's next find was Craspedia lanata , which look like something you'd expect to see at the bottom of the ocean rather than in the mountains, she says.
" Craspedia lanata — also known as woollyhead — has these cute round flower heads, and spotting these in their natural environment felt like finding treasure."
By the time they had exhausted the day, the botanic garden team had managed to collect a more than worthwhile haul of specimens from the area, including divisions, cuttings and seeds.
There were Myosotis pulvinaris divisions, with compact, silvery-grey to grey-green, hairy cushion-forming growth habit; Raoulia grandiflora divisions, a plant with an interesting "piled-up" look to it, like nature's own little rock garden; Raoulia subsericea divisions, a plant known for its fuzzy, silvery leaves; Raoulia hectorii var. mollis seeds, a tough, low-growing species that thrives in the alpine conditions of the region; Craspedia lanata glomerules, with the little flower heads that are so iconic to the species; Celmisia viscosa seed, which shares with other Celmisia species its quite unique, leathery, silvery leaves built to survive some of the harshest conditions. Also collected were cuttings from Veronica buchananii , a small compact plant that adds a pop of colour in the alpine landscape, and Ozomanthus leptophyllus , a bit of a mouthful to say, a plant with small, narrow leaves and delicate flowers.
After a life-saving coffee break in the Old Man Range's blistering cold, the team moved back down the mountain, experiencing the same noticeable shift in habitat, but in reverse. The tussock returned, accompanied by the other plants of the lower slopes.
That being the case, there were more finds to be made.
There were seeds from Melycitus alpinus , a native shrub with small clustered flowers that attract bees and other pollinators.
"I found one growing in between two slate rocks on the ground and about 6cm tall instead of its bushy form. Almost growing like moss would in a gap. Very resilient!" Freeman says.
Had the team not collected Acaena saccatipula seeds, the plant may well have helped collect itself. The plants have prickly seedheads that can stick to clothing — their secret weapon for spreading around.
Another Celmisia species joined the day's collection, this time Celmisia argentea seeds. Its silver leaves make it stand out, like something straight from a frosty wonderland. Argentea means "silvery", so it is well named.
Finally, and very carefully, the garden team harvested some seeds from Aciphylla aurea [commonly known as golden spaniard or speargrass].
"A stunning alpine plant with sharp, spiky leaves and golden flower heads," Freeman says. "It is like nature's own version of a defence system. Wouldn't want to fall into one!"
Each collection was placed in a labelled bag for safe keeping. Clean tools were used during collection as a general precaution against spreading disease in the environment.
Back at the botanic garden, the team prepared a free-draining potting mix similar to what would be used with growing succulent plants in the garden's care.
The mix consists of four parts of the garden's standard pine bark mix, one part sand, one part perlite and one part gravel. The seeds were gently sown on top of the mix in seedling pots and lightly covered with a thin layer of gravel to protect them.
The cuttings and divisions were potted into terracotta pots and placed deep into the garden's outside sand bed, which regulates temperature in a similar way to their natural environment, while the porous terracotta allows water to escape.
The softer and more vulnerable cuttings were planted into tubes, in the same mix, and placed in a propagation house close to the misting bench. They will be potted up when they get established.

They are the straw weights of the animal world. But they are holding their own. Four nationally critical Awakopaka skinks from the Homer Saddle in Fiordland, with fewer than 20 of the animals ever recorded, have been born in a special climate-controlled facility at Auckland Zoo. These highly anticipated babies — one birth captured on video — are the offspring of a pregnant adult female urgently translocated from the saddle last November as part of a collaborative effort by the zoo, Department of Conservation (Doc) and Ngāi Tahu to prevent the extinction of this rare species. Born in late April, the tiny offspring weighed just 0.32g-0.42g — about the same weight as a third of a paperclip — and were about 7cm long. While one has since died, the remaining three have now grown to about half a gram and are progressing well — though remain incredibly delicate at this size. Auckland Zoo ectothems leader Dave Laux said the animals were incredibly small but they were growing every day. "They are super delicate creatures. "They spend a little too long out in the sun and that can really cost them. "So we have to really watch their environmental parameters." They needed to balance constantly keeping an eye on them and giving them confidence. The climate-controlled facility built at the zoo in 2023 mirrored their habitat in Fiordland. "You can be sitting out in the sun in Fiordland with all the heat coming off the rocks and it is very comfortable. "Then the cloud comes over, the rain and wind comes in and it is freezing. "They say you are never half an hour away from death in Fiordland." Auckland Zoo animal care and conservation head Richard Gibson said the species was only discovered in 2014 and was thought to be on the very precipice of extinction. Introduced predators such as the house mouse were a constant threat. They are known from only a handful of hectares of steep, rugged bolder habitat near the Homer Saddle where beech and tussock masts, or heavy seeding events, result in an explosion of mammalian predators including rats and mice. Doc undertakes regular and extensive rodent control across the terrain as part of their ongoing effort to protect skinks in the wild and give the species a fighting chance. Dr Laux did not know the gestation period for the mother. The find of the mother on a bluff has motivated Doc to search other bluffs after the snow retreats this summer. New Zealand has at least 126 endemic species of skink and gecko, of which 92% are either "threatened", or "at risk" of extinction. Dr Laux said animals such as hoihoi and kākāpō got the headlines but skinks were crucial too. They played an important role in the ecology of New Zealand's varied habitats. Mr Gibson said "it was urgent that we recognise and prioritise focused conservation efforts for many, or we risk losing them for ever".

A promising new sausage bait for feral cats is being trialled in the Catlins. Following trials in the St James Conservation Area in North Canterbury last year, and Macraes Flat earlier this year, the bait was dropped across the remote, 4969ha Maclennan Range of the Catlins Conservation Park last week. Although the bait used the familiar 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) as a toxin, the 18g sausage meat medium had been especially formulated to be "highly attractive" to feral cats, Doc national eradication manager Stephen Horn said. "Results from the first trial in the St James Conservation Area (Lewis Pass) show the bait was highly effective at controlling feral cats within the study area. Full results from the Macraes Flat trial are still being analysed but preliminary results show 100% mortality of the 11 collared cats within the treatment area." The bait was particularly effective against feral cats, as native species did not seem to be attracted to it, although it was also effective in eliminating stoats. "The trials involve two applications of bait — the first without toxin to cue feral cats to the sausages and the second using sausages containing small amounts of 1080. They build on earlier research showing the sausage baits are highly attractive to feral cats and not attractive to most native species such as kiwi, or to deer." Feral cats and stoats would be monitored using trail cameras. Several cats had also been caught and fitted with GPS collars to monitor their movement and survival rate through the trial. A sample of baits would be monitored with cameras to observe and record all animals interacting with the sausage bait. Mr Horn said the predations of feral cats were a serious issue across New Zealand and this latest trial would provide data to decide whether the new bait could be effective in targeting key predator-control areas as part of Doc's predator-free 2050 initiative. "The results of the trials will inform Doc's application to the Ministry for Primary Industries and Environmental Protection Authority to register the meat bait. "Once registered, Doc plans to use the bait to help remove feral cats from Auckland Island as part of an ambitious plan to eradicate all pests, including feral pigs and mice, from this large subantarctic nature reserve. "These pests threaten hundreds of native species and have decimated albatross and other seabird populations on the island." He said Doc would apply "normal pesticide precautions" for the Catlins test site during the trial.

Fenced enclosure to protect rare skinks

A new fenced enclosure is being built on the West Coast, aiming to protect the world's last known population of 30 critically endangered Alborn skinks. A recent survey of skink numbers shows the work is urgent and the fence, near Reefton, will be built earlier than planned to ensure the species' survival. Protecting a 5ha area, the fence will be constructed from a durable stainless steel mesh specially designed to keep mice, rats and stoats out. Department of Conservation (Doc) ranger supervisor Gemma Hunt said the fence would hopefully stop the population's decline. "Even though we reduced mouse numbers earlier this year through pest control, there has been a constant threat of mice reinvading from outside the treatment area and continuing to prey on the skinks," she said. "Long-term population monitoring by Doc and Auckland Zoo indicated there were between 40 and 100 skinks early last year, but more recent estimates suggest a worryingly low number of just 30. "We hope to find more skinks when we continue our surveys this spring but in the meantime a predator-proof fence is necessary to secure the population and prevent extinction. "Following the pest control operation earlier this year, we decided to move some skinks to safe housing at Auckland Zoo as a precaution," Ms Hunt said. Doc and zoo staff managed to find three skinks in late autumn before cooler temperatures prevented further collection and these were transferred to the zoo. "When it's cold, the skinks burrow into the ground to protect themselves from extreme low temperatures and move very little. This not only makes it harder for us to find them but makes them easy prey for mice, who can access these same burrows," she said. "New Zealand has one of the highest rates of threatened species in the world, with 4000 species, including the Alborn skink, at risk of extinction. Once these species are gone from here, they are gone for good." Other populations such as Kapitia skinks were doing well in the fenced enclosures Doc had built, she said. It is believed two or three baby skinks are born to females each year so, if those families can be protected from predators, their numbers will steadily grow. The Alborn skink was discovered in the 1990s and has been rarely detected since. Not much is known about them although they are extremely tolerant of moist habitat. Ms Hunt said the aim was to complete the $700,000 fence by November. "We're asking the public to support our work through donations to the New Zealand Nature Fund."— APL
