After dominant victories in their first two Currie Cup matches, the Bulls were brought back down to earth by the experienced Pumas in their clash at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday afternoon.
The visitors bullied their hosts in contact, dominated the scrums, and showed superiority with their driving mauls and counter-mauls to claim a bonus-point 41-7 win in Pretoria.
With the six-try victory, the Jimmy Stonehouse-coached outfit leapfrogged the Lions and Bulls into the lead on the official log, with the Johannesburg side still to play against the Boland Cavaliers on Sunday afternoon.

The Pumas showed why they are one of the favourites in the competition, despite a hiccup last weekend, and their experience paved the way for the victory. Stonehouse will be happy with how his side responded, especially away from home, following the loss to the Cheetahs.
While the first half was a grinding affair as both sides looked to get on top, they would've been frustrated with the errors that crept in and saw them changing sides with the score only at 10-7 in favour of the eventual winners.
The Bulls were first to score a try after an opening penalty from the visitors. That converted try remained the sole points for the home side. They coughed up plenty of opportunities after good plays, and it looked as if they were going to put up a strong fight. The hosts had the visitors under pressure with their ball-in-hand play for a good part of the first half.
However, the experience of the Pumas enabled them to weather the initial storm to claim the upper hand in almost all facets of the game in the final 10 minutes before halftime.

Steve Barker's Stellenbosch FC hold sway over Eric Tinkler's Sekhukhune United in MTN8 semi

Stellenbosch FC Devon Titus celebrates his goal against Sekhukhune United in the MTN8 first-leg semi-final at Danie Craven Stadium. Picture: BackpagePix Steve Barker may have played down the stranglehold he holds over managerial rival Eric Tinkler in the build-up to this MTN8 semifinal first-leg, but Barker was once again the one smiling after Stellenbosch FC comfortably beat Sekhukhune United 2-0 at the Danie Craven Stadium on Saturday evening. The victory was Barker's eighth success over a Tinkler-coached side after previously dominating the iKapa derby when the former Bafana Bafana midfielder was at the helm of now-relegated Cape Town City. But not even a change of teams and cities have been able to improve Tinkler's fortunes. It's hard though to imagine how this first-leg could have gone better for Barker and his Stellies troops. The only disappointment on the night for the home side was Ashley Cupido limping off after just seven minutes due to injury again, but this was compensated for with substitute Lesiba Nku delivering an inspired performance.

Cheetahs secure narrow victory over Western Province in dramatic Currie Cup clash

Cheetahs outside back Cohen Jasper, pictured here against Boland, played a pivotal role in his side's Currie Cup victory over Western Province. Image: BackpagePix The Cheetahs made life difficult for themselves with ill-discipline on Saturday, nearly throwing away a victory against Western Province in their Currie Cup encounter in Bloemfontein. Some desperate defence and excellent lineout steals saved them from embarrassment as they hung on with just 13 players for the final five minutes to seal a crucial 31–24 bonus-point win. The home side scored five tries to Western Province's three, and with the victory, they claimed top spot on the Currie Cup log with three rounds to go. Video Player is loading. They had dominated Province up front, and their slick outside backs enjoyed the space created out wide. First-half tries by fullback Cohen Jasper and loose forward Mihlali Mosi, along with scores from winger Banie Britz, lock Juan Venter, and No. 8 Neels Volschenk, gave the home side a comfortable 21-point cushion. But then the wheels came off, and the game nearly ended in a spectacular draw. Western Province started playing like a proper team, attacking with flair and putting the Cheetahs under immense pressure. Perhaps the shift of fullback Tristan Leyds to flyhalf played a part — suddenly there was rhythm, and space opened up out wide as Leyds distributed the ball beautifully from first receiver. A brave fight back, but not enough as we come up short in Bloemfontein. #CHEvWP #wpjoulekkerding — WP RUGBY (@WP_RUGBY) August 16, 2025

Currie Cup result: Cheetahs survive WP scare, Lions surge past Pumas

The Cheetahs held off a late charge by WP, while the Lions got back to winning ways with a win over the Pumas. The Cheetahs withstood a late Western Province fightback in Bloemfontein, while the Lions beat the Pumas in Nelspruit in Saturday's Currie Cup action. Province looked dead and buried when trailing 31-10 with 20 minutes to go, but hit back with tries from replacements Jared Africa and Enos Ndiao to cut the deficit to seven. The drama intensified when Cheetahs centre Marco Janse van Vuren was shown red after a second yellow card. WP thought they had levelled the scores when scrumhalf Ezekiel Ngobeni darted away to score under the posts, but the TMO ruled a knock-on in the build-up. And while the Cheetahs were reduced to 13 men when hooker Marko Janse van Vuren was sent to the bin, they clung on for a 31-24 win that took them to the top of the Currie Cup log. WP's losing bonus point lifted them off the bottom. Earlier, winger Cohen Jasper opened the scoring for the hosts before flyhalf Jurie Matthee added a penalty. Flank Mihlali Mosi extended the lead when he chased down winger Banie Britz's kick, but Van Vuren's deliberate knock-on saw the Cheetahs down to 14. Province took advantage, with winger Shilton van Wyk crossing just before the break to make it 12-10. The Cheetahs struck back soon after the restart when Britz scored after a quick tap from a scrum free kick, with lock Juan Venter and No 8 Neels Volschenk adding further tries to secure the bonus point and build a match-winning cushion. In Nelspruit, the Lions bounced back from last week's loss to Boland with a 36-28 victory over the Pumas. The sides went into half time level at 21-21 after three converted tries apiece, but two third-quarter tries – including a second for flank Renzo du Plessis – swung the match the Lions' way. The result lifted the Lions to second on the log ahead of Sunday's clash between Boland and the Bulls in Wellington. This story was first published on It is republished here with permission.
