Taimoor, Dalia tame rivals to clinch tennis titles
Taimoor Ansari and Dalia Ashraf tamed their respective rivals to clinch the mens and ladies singles titles respectively as the inaugural ISDIN Tennis Championship concluded at the DA Creek Club Karachi on Wednesday evening.
Taimoor was stretched to the limit by Mahateer Muhammed in the final, the two players matching each other stroke for stroke. However, Taimoor, with his superior skills on the day, emerged as the winner with scores of 6-4,0-6, 11-9.
The ladies singles final was also a well contested affair with Eschelle Asif giving a tough time to Dalia Ashraf. Both the players displayed high class tennis before Dalia emerged victorious by 9-7. In the under-13 singles final, spirited tennis was seen from Meer Abbas Bhagat who outplayed Syed Abdullah 4-1,4-1 to win the title. The event was hosted under the auspices of Karachi Tennis Association
Shahrukh Khursheed, Director Operation COSMO Group, was the chief guest at the closing ceremony and distributed cash awards worth rupees 200,000 among the winners and runners up of all the five events.
In his speech, Shahrukh thanked KTA and Managment of DA Creek Club for professionally and excellently organizing the tennis championship.
He added that ISDIN is a world renowned brand and world number one Alcaraz who recently won the men's singles title at French Open is its brand ambassador. He also announced to hold the National Tennis Championship later this year in winter.
Khalid Shamsi, Moulana Hafiz Abdul Majeed and Dr.Quratul Ain, Vice President Sindh Karate Association, also spoke to the sizeable audience at the closing ceremony. They all praised the excellent organisation of the Championship.
Muhammad Khalid Rehmani, SVP STA thanked the sponsors and Creek Club management and media for their fullest support to promote tennis in country. He disclosed that 100 plus entries were received for five events. He added that KTA/STA will hold three Nationals in July during summer vacation and one in the month of August in Karachi. Director Sports, Commissioner Karachi's office, Ghulam Mohammad Khan was also present on the occasion among other guests.

The 18-year-old wild card saved all four break points she faced, and broke reigning French Open champion Gauff three times on the way to a comprehensive victory in just 62 minutes. "I don't even know what to say still, I was kind of shocked about it all," said Mboko, adding that the support of the home crowd had buoyed her late in the second set. "I just remember in the last game when I was up 5-4, the crowd kind of started cheering even louder, and everything got super noisy," she said. "I kind of used that as more fuel for myself and to pump myself up a little bit more. "I think it helped me tremendously, especially in the last game, since they were so encouraging me. It was just amazing." Mboko started the season ranked 333rd in the world and has worked her way up to 85 but the win over Gauff — who she took to three sets in Rome in May — is the biggest win of her career. "Playing Coco is obviously never easy. She's number two in the world, and it has been such a great opportunity for me to play against someone like her," Mboko said. "I was just happy I kept my composure today and I pulled it through." Gauff, who had a combined 37 double faults as she struggled through her first two matches, was caught flat-footed as the Canadian teen raced through the first set in 25 minutes. Gauff buckled down in the second, but she was unable to convert three break chances in the seventh game -- coming up short on a drop shot and smacking a forehand into the net on the first two. She gained anther chance only to hit a service return long, then flew a volley wide to give Mboko a game point, duly converted when Gauff fired a forehand long. Down 15-30 in the ninth game, Mboko leveled at 30-30 with a blistering backhand, then closed out the hold for a 5-4 lead. Serving to stay in the match, Gauff fell in a quick 0-30 hole and double-faulted to give Mboko a match point, on which the American hit a backhand into the net. "She played a really great match, that's basically it," Gauff said.

Tsitsipas brings father back as coach after Ivanisevic split
Stefanos Tsitsipas has brought his father Apostolos back as coach after ending his brief partnership with Goran Ivanisevic, the former world number three said. Photo: AFP World number two Coco Gauff battled into the third round of the WTA Canadian Open on Tuesday by outlasting US compatriot Danielle Collins 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7/2). Gauff won the last six points of the match to capture her opener in her first hardcourt tune-up event on the road to the US Open, which starts on August 24. Top seed Gauff, the reigning French Open champion who also won the 2023 US Open, advanced to a third-round Montreal match against fifth-ranked Veronika Kudermetova, who eliminated Serbian Olga Danilovic 6-4, 6-2. "It was a frustrating match for me just because I felt like I was practicing well and then I don't think I transferred it," Gauff said. "But hopefully I got my bad match of the tournament out of the way and I can come back stronger in the next round." The 21-year-old Gauff, seeking her 11th career WTA title, fired 23 double faults against three aces, but closed out the match with an ace after two hours and 55 minutes. "It was a tough battle out there," Gauff said. "Making serves in the court was the toughest challenge. Maybe if I cut that in half it could be a quicker match for me. I thought I was playing well, except for that part of my game." Gauff converted nine of 16 break chances in her first victory since capturing the title at Roland Garros. "For me to break her as many times as I did, there are some positives to take from today," Gauff said. Collins served for the match leading 6-5 in the final set only for Gauff to break with a backhand crosscourt winner to force a tiebreaker. Gauff fell behind 2-1 but landed an mis-hit lob winner and never dropped another point, Collins hitting a forehand long, double faulting and netting a backhand to 5-2 before Gauff blasted a service winner and ace to end matters. Ito ousts Paolini The day's biggest shocker saw Japanese qualifier Aoi Ito stun Italian seventh seed Jasmine Paolini 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/5). The 21-year-old beat American Katie Volynets in the first round for her first WTA 1000 level triumph then followed with her first victory over a top-10 opponent by rallying from a set and break down to advance after two hours and 27 minutes. World number 110 Ito saved a match point in the 10th game of the second set and outlasted sixth-ranked Paolini to book a third-round match against Spain's 51st-ranked Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who defeated American Ashlyn Krueger 6-4, 6-4. Ito reached the semi-finals last October at Osaka in her WTA debut and claimed a 125-level title at Canberra in January, but until this week had not won a tour-level match this year. In other matches, DC Open champion Leylah Fernandez dropped her opener on home soil, falling to Australian Maya Joint 6-4, 6-1. Washington runner-up Anna Kalinskaya advances, the Russian beating American Ann Li 7-6 (8/6), 0-6, 6-3. Russian fourth seed Mirra Andreeva advanced to the third round in a walkover past Canada's Bianca Andreescu due to a left ankle injury.
