600-cr infra grant: Mayor puts the ball in MLA's court

Time of India2 days ago
Mohali: Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu has put the ball into MLA Kulwant Singh's court over a Rs 600 crore development grant, asking the legislator to approach the chief minister for its release.
On Tuesday, the mayor, through his representative, delivered a copy of a letter addressed to the CM to the MLA's office. The letter seeks urgent financial assistance for 15 key projects in Mohali, including resolving the garbage crisis, improving drainage, introducing a city bus service, replacing the old asbestos sewage system, and constructing an auditorium.
Sidhu said the municipal corporation is in dire need of funds, with no independent revenue sources.
He alleged that Gmada, which earns billions from land sales in Mohali, fails to provide the necessary share for city development, leaving crucial projects stalled. The mayor recalled that MLA Kulwant Singh had earlier asked for a detailed expenditure plan for the Rs 600 crore grant. "I have now provided him with the details," he said, adding that he obtained a letter from the MLA's office through Bhim Singh, the legislator's official.tnn
Sidhu challenged the MLA to state when he would meet the CM for the release of the grant. "We are ready to go along with him at any time," he said, adding that the residents of the city cannot wait any longer for basic infrastructure improvements.
The proposal, the mayor said, outlines the urgent works required to expedite Mohali's development, with each project prioritised for immediate execution if funds are approved.

"Are They Maoists?" EPS Slams MK Stalin Over Action Against Sanitation Workers

Chennai: AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) has launched a huge attack on the DMK government in Tamil Nadu led by MK Stalin over the state government's alleged ill-treatment of sanitation workers. At least 900 sanitation workers who had been on a strike for the last 13 days were detained in Chennai. They have objected to the state government outsourcing conservancy services in two city zones. "At the gates of the Ripon Building, in the middle of the night, your administration unleashed oppression - brutally beating and removing sanitation workers who, even during Covid, cleaned up our garbage and kept the city tidy - and detained them at various locations," EPS, who is also Leader of Opposition in the assembly, said in a post on X. "Who are they? Anti-social elements? Gangsters? Maoists? No. They are poor, humble people who work daily to clean and maintain Chennai city. Is it wrong that the sanitation workers, in a lawful manner, protested against you for acting exactly opposite to the promise you gave them?" EPS said. "You happily did photoshoots having tea and coffee with them... Was your friendliness only for that moment? Now, when they are asking you to fulfil your promise, does it make you uncomfortable?" the former chief minister said. EPS reminded Mr Stalin something the chief minister said while the DMK was in the Opposition. "When you were the Leader of the Opposition, in the letters you wrote, didn't you grandstand saying, 'Regardless of any case against them, give these workers permanent jobs.' Do you still remember?" "In the 79 years of independent India, no government has ever unleashed such midnight violence and forced action against poor sanitation workers who serve both our government and our people," the AIADMK leader said. — Edappadi K Palaniswami-SayYEStoWomenSafety&AIADMK (@EPSTamilNadu) August 14, 2025 Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarassu today announced a major welfare package for sanitation workers, outlining new health, housing, education, and social security measures. The announcement came amid the detention of protesting sanitation workers and supporters. Mr Stalin in a post on X highlighted some key details of the package. These include Rs 10 lakh insurance cover for sanitation workers, with families receiving this sum in case of death on duty. — (@mkstalin) August 14, 2025 Despite the welfare package, the state has not withdrawn its plan to hand over conservancy services in Zones V and VI of Chennai to private contractors, nor has it assured permanency of jobs or salary security - the core demands of the striking workers.

From pavement to shopfront: Mohali mechanics get their own market after four decades

A long-pending dream of Mohali's motor and scooter mechanics came true on Thursday when MLA Kulwant Singh handed over Letters of Intent (LOIs) for 224 newly sanctioned 14.22 sq yard shops in a dedicated Motor & Scooter Market — modelled on Chandigarh's iconic motor markets. The new market, located near Kambli village in Sector 65, will house mechanics from Mohali village market and Phase 7, giving them a proper workplace after decades of working under tarpaulins, tin sheds, and makeshift boxes along the roadside. Scooter Market President Gurvinder Singh Sohal could barely contain his joy. 'I applied for the GMADA survey years ago. Now, with our own shops in an open space, our happiness is unbounded. We've gone from roadside box owners to shop owners — thanks to God and to the MLA for giving us such a beautiful gift on the eve of Independence Day. God has rewarded more than 40 years of our hard work. This will benefit city residents and ease the problems of Phase 7,' he said. Mohali Village Motor Market President Amandeep Singh Abhiyana called it 'a historic and commendable step.' 'For years, governments only gave promises, not space. MLA Kulwant Singh worked tirelessly with us to achieve what others never could. Today, our dreams stand on solid ground,' he said. Kulwant Singh had raised the issue in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, pressing for resolution of the pending RERA number that had stalled the project. GMADA has now cleared it, paving the way for construction. Addressing the gathering, the MLA assured that the new market would boost employment and ensure planned city growth. 'Mechanics left out in the first survey will get their rightful place after a re-survey. Build your shops as per GMADA's plan, and I will personally stand with you against any future obstacles,' he said, thanking CM Bhagwant Mann for personally intervening. On Thursday, 25 mechanics received their LOIs on stage, while the rest will get them online.
