Indonesia seeks to end rice imports in 2025 as output jumps

The Star09-05-2025

JAKARTA: Indonesia is set to stop importing rice this year for the first time in decades, thanks to surging production and stockpiles in one of the world's top growers of the staple food.
Domestic output is expected to increase to at least 33.8 million tonnes in 2026, up from a target of 32.8 million tonnes this year, said Vice Minister of Agriculture Sudaryono.
National rice reserves more than doubled to 4 million tonnes in May from 1.7 million tonnes in January, as production improved following a drought-induced slump last year, according to ministry data.
The plan supports President Prabowo Subianto's ambition to reduce reliance on other countries. Since taking office in October, he has been championing food self-sufficiency in the world's fourth-most populous nation, where 280 million people consume around 30 million tonnes of rice annually.
Prabowo's campaign has gained momentum amid rising global tensions and climate disruptions. Indonesia imported 4.65 million tonnes of rice in 2023-24, the highest since 1997-98, due to crop damage from El Nino, according to US Department of Agriculture data.
The nation has bought rice every season since at least the 1960s, the agency's figures show.
"Having food security is like preventing people from getting sick,' Sudaryono, who like many Indonesians uses one name, said in an interview on Wednesday. "It is cheaper than curing them.'
The expanded reserves could even allow for exports, a rare phenomenon in the nation. At least two neighbouring countries, Malaysia and the Philippines, have asked to buy rice from Indonesia, said Sudaryono.
Currently, about 1,000 tonnes is being prepared for shipment to Malaysia's Sabah and Sarawak, he said.
Indonesia produced 8.61 million tonnes of rice in the first quarter, a 53% jump from the same period last year, thanks to more favourable weather during the rainy season.
With additional efforts taken to boost output during the dry season of May through July, production may beat the target, he said. Indonesia's rice output is forecast to increase 11% in the first half, according to the statistics bureau.
Sudaryono said that around 37,000 of the ministry's so-called agriculture extension workers have been deployed across the nation to help farmers lift their output. The ministry also sought help from the military to assist with the process.
"Each of them monitors two or three villages to identify what needs to be done and what we can provide to help them boost production. Every day, they report to the officials in Jakarta who will then take proper actions,' he said.
The government also plans to convert more swamps into rice fields this year by installing a drainage system so that water can be evenly distributed.
Swamp areas are mostly under water and become suitable for planting only during the dry season, when water levels drop, he said.
The target is to convert 500,000 hectares of swamps into farmland this year, up from 350,000 hectares in 2024. - Bloomberg

Billionaire Razon enters Philippines' booming online gambling platform

A photo taken on Sept 16, 2016, shows billionaire Enrique Razon, chairman of International Container Terminal Services Inc and Bloomberry Resorts Corporation, during an interview in Manila. -- PHOTO: BLOOMBERG MANILA (Bloomberg): Tycoon Enrique Razon's Bloomberry Resorts Corp. launched its online casino platform in the Philippines' booming internet gambling sector, taking aim at market leader DigiPlus Interactive Corp. Revenue from electronic games overtook those from large brick-and-mortar casinos for the first time in the Philippines last year, marking a shift in Asia's second-largest gambling hub, according to the nation's gaming agency. Bloomberry's gaming site is accepting bets of less than $1 for games such as slots, baccarat and roulette, as the company targets mass consumers. Razon, with a net worth of $11.3 billion according to Bloomberg's Billionaires Index, told stockholders in April that his online gaming foray would diversify the company's revenue streams. Bloomberry runs two integrated resorts in the metropolitan Manila region under the Solaire brand, and a casino in Jeju in South Korea. Bloomberry shares rallied as much as 18.8% on Monday, marking its largest intraday gain in more than six weeks and making it the top-performer among Philippine blue chip stocks. While the Southeast Asian nation's expanding online gaming market has room for another player like Bloomberry, the company will face tough competition from entrenched DigiPlus. "Competing with DigiPlus, an established player with 40 million registered users, presents notable challenges for Bloomberry,' said Toby Allan Arce, an analyst at Globalinks Securities & Stocks Inc. in Manila. DigiPlus attracted 40 million registered users in 2024, double its 2023 numbers, according to the company. It is already looking at other markets after securing a license in Brazil, where the company will offer sports betting. It is also setting up a Singapore unit to drive international growth. -- ©2025 Bloomberg L.P.

Indonesia to develop oil palm plantation in South Papua to boost biodiesel production

JAKARTA (Bernama) -- Indonesia plans to develop oil palm plantation in Boven Digoel regency, South Papua province, to strengthen economic resilience and energy independence, the Defence Ministry said. The project supports a national strategy initiated by President Prabowo Subianto to increase biodiesel production, reduce fuel imports, and underscore Papua's strategic role in national stability and development. Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin visited the proposed site on Sunday for an aerial survey, joined by military officials, infrastructure advisers, PT Agrinas Palma Nusantara executives, and the Governor of South Papua. Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman, Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni, and Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo were also present. "The government reaffirms its commitment to national energy self-sufficiency while enhancing sovereignty from both security and economic perspectives,' the defence ministry said. It also highlighted the importance of cross-sectoral synergy between defence, agriculture, forestry, and energy for sustainable energy sovereignty. The visit reflected the Indonesian government's intent to stabilise Papua and integrate the resource-rich region through defence-led infrastructure amid separatist tensions, it added. Meanwhile, Sjafrie and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati also visited conflict-prone zones in Papua on Sunday, including Timika and Nduga, where they were briefed on local security conditions, the Defence Ministry said. In a separate statement, both ministers stressed the importance of aligning defence and financial strength to support national stability. "Defence requires financial support to be realised, and conversely, a strong defence supports the economy, thereby strengthening national finances,' they noted. The visit, which included engagements with local officials and communities, underscored cross-ministerial efforts to enhance infrastructure and security in Papua despite ongoing challenges. - Bernama

Taiwan exports to US hit record high as tariff threat looms

Taiwan's trade surplus with the US is the seventh highest of any country, reaching US$73.9 billion in 2024. (EPA Images pic) TAIPEI : Taiwan's exports to the US hit a record high in May, official data showed today, as the self-ruled island seeks to strike a deal with Washington to avoid hefty tariffs. US President Donald Trump slapped a 32% toll on Taiwanese products in April. It was later paused for 90 days, but a global 10% levy is still in place. As Taipei and Washington negotiate a trade deal, American companies have ramped up orders of Taiwanese-made high-tech products in case the higher tariff takes effect next month. Taiwanese shipments to the US soared 87.4% in May from a year ago to US$15.5 billion, finance ministry figures showed. Both figures were a record high, Bloomberg News reported. Taiwan's total exports hit US$51.7 billion – also the highest ever. Shipments of information, communication and audio-video products soared 111.1% and electronic parts were up 28.4%, the data showed. The overall growth 'was impressive but I would caution that a lot of it is because of export frontloading as the US may still apply tariffs on chips and exempted electronic products,' Michelle Lam, Greater China economist at Societe Generale SA, was quoted by Bloomberg as saying. 'We are bound to see a slowdown later in the year,' Lam said. Taiwan's government has sought to avoid Trump's threatened levies by pledging increased investment in the US, more purchases of US energy and greater defence spending. Its trade surplus with the US is the seventh highest of any country, reaching US$73.9 billion in 2024. Around 60% of Taiwan's exports to the US are information and communications technology products, including semiconductors.
