Narlikar remembered in film by childhood friend Sai Paranjpye
The film was made after a request from Dr Somak Raychaudhuri, then director of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA). 'He knew about my friendship with Jayant and my work in media and asked me to make something for the occasion. I told him that I don't know anything about astrophysics, so how could I make a film, but he told me to do it my own way.' shared Paranjpye.
Paranjpye and Narlikar have been friends since childhood. 'We've known each other since we were eight years old; I still remember us sitting on a stone elephant as kids,' she said.
Their families were also connected. Narlikar's father, Vishnu Narlikar, was a physicist who admired Paranjpye's grandfather, Raghunath Purushottam Paranjpye, the first Indian Wrangler at Cambridge. This connection led to visits between the families in Banaras, where Vishnu Narlikar worked at Banaras Hindu University.
Paranjpye included a surprise performance by a Marathi Tamasha troupe for the birthday event. Dressed in traditional Marathi attire and accompanied by dholkis, the troupe entered unannounced, briefly confusing the audience. One of the performers addressed the crowd, saying they had come to honour a man who had contributed significantly to science. 'You promote education and expect us to be educated, but when we want to celebrate someone like Dr Narlikar, who's contributed so much to astrophysics, we are stopped. That's not fair,' Paranjpye recalls.
The gesture was well received by the audience, and IUCAA professor and astrophysicist Ajit Kembhavi invited the performers to continue. Their act was a blend of song and dance in traditional dhol-tasha form. It included a 'gurn' song, traditionally sung in praise of Lord Ganesha but adapted for Dr Narlikar. 'Jayant was deeply moved,' Paranjpye shares.
This performance was captured on film. As per Paranjpe, two years ago, the film was then screened at Ashoka University, where Dr Raychaudhuri serves as Vice-Chancellor. 'He insisted we screen the film at the university, and since most of my work is archived there, it felt right to have it shown in that setting.'
Paranjpye described the film as a personal tribute shaped by their shared history. 'It wasn't a documentary; it was a film made in my style, and Jayant truly appreciated it.'

War 2 worldwide box office collection day 4: Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR film beats L2 Empuraan, Raid 2's lifetime haul
War 2 worldwide box office collection day 4: War 2, one of the most ambitious films of the YRF Spy Universe, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, released in theatres on August 14. Despite clashing with Rajinikanth's Coolie, the film has managed to maintain its hold at the box office and has now secured a place among the top five highest-grossing Indian films of 2025. Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR and Kiara Advani's still from War 2. War 2's box office collection in 4 days According to Sacnilk, War 2 earned ₹174.75 crore net in India in four days ( ₹208.25 crore gross). On Sunday, the film earned ₹32.15 crore, down 3.31% from its Saturday haul of ₹33.25 crore. Internationally, the film has earned ₹60 crore gross overseas. This takes the total worldwide collection to ₹268.25 crore in four days. The film, however, is clearly lagging behind Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj's Coolie. With this milestone, Ayan Mukerji's directorial has surpassed the lifetime collections of Mohanlal's L2: Empuraan ( ₹265.5 crore worldwide), Ajay Devgn and Riteish Deshmukh's Raid 2 ( ₹237 crore worldwide), Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par ( ₹267.5 crore worldwide), and the animated film Mahavatar Narsimha ( ₹267 crore worldwide). The film is now inching closer to overtaking Akshay Kumar's Housefull 5 ( ₹288.58 crore worldwide). The film has now emerged as the fifth-highest-grossing Indian film of 2025. Leading the list is Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal, Akshaye Khanna and Rashmika Mandanna, with a massive ₹800 crore worldwide. Saiyaara holds the second spot with ₹547 crore, followed by Coolie at third with ₹385 crore, and Housefull 5 at fourth. About War 2 Helmed by Ayan Mukerji, the film is the sixth instalment in the YRF Spy Universe after Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai, War, Pathaan, and Tiger 3. Apart from Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, the film also stars Ashutosh Rana and Kiara Advani in key roles. The film opened to mixed-to-negative reviews from critics, with many criticising its dull writing and poor VFX. OG War and Pathaan's assistant director Rajvir Shahir also criticised the film and wrote on Instagram, 'This one was just a heartbreaking experience for me. I was rooting for this film, and all it did was upset me to no degree! A mid-first half is followed by a deplorable and overlong second. Neither did it have enough highs nor was it successful in resonating with me emotionally! The most 'anticipated' day turned out to be a 'colossal' disappointment. Weakest film of the universe (YRF Spy Universe)!'

Coolie And War 2 Combined Extended Weekend Worldwide Box Office: Rajinikanth, Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR smash Rs 632 crore together in 4 days
Coolie and War 2 were unquestionably the year's two most anticipated movies. Coolie managed to, more or less, meet the desired weekend expectations while War 2 failed to do so. Coolie had a record Kollywood opening weekend of Rs 375 crore worldwide, but War 2 fumbled, collecting around Rs 257 crore. War 2, being a pricier and more wider appealing movie than Coolie, should have been doing more than Coolie, but that has not happened. Coolie And War 2 Pack A Global Opening Weekend Of Rs 632 Crore; Coolie Contributes 60 Percent Coolie took a lead of Rs 70 odd crore on the opening day itself, and it extended its lead to around Rs 118 crore the weekend. Coolie is trending slightly better than War 2, and that would mean that Coolie will end up with lifetime collections of around Rs 150 crore more than War 2, in the full run. Coolie targets a final number in the vicinity of Rs 500 crore while War 2 may find it difficult to reach Rs 350 crore. The combined collections of the two movies will fail to hit even Rs 900 crore worldwide and that's not good. There's nothing that affects reputation more than under-delivering, and that's what has happened here. Coolie And War 2 Pack The 3rd Biggest Global Weekend Of All Time For New Indian Movies Only 2 times, other than the last weekend where Coolie and War 2 smashed Rs 632 crore between them, did new Indian movies pack a global weekend of over Rs 600 crore. The first time it happened was in 2022 when KGF 2 and Beast, together, managed to smash over Rs 700 crore through their extended opening weekend. KGF 2 propelled the numbers, with contributions of over 70 percent. The second time it happened was when Pushpa 2, singlehandedly raked in around Rs 790 crore over its extended four day weekend. Coolie Targets To Become One Of Kollywood's Highest Grossing Movies Worldwide Both Coolie and War 2 may not be matching their potential. But that doesn't mean that Coolie is a flop or something. Coolie sets its eyes on the top 5 highest grossing Kollywood movies of all time. The top 5 list, currently includes 2 Rajinikanth movies, 2 Vijay movie and 1 film by Mani Ratnam. By the end of the run, Rajinikanth's film will have pushed out The GOAT from the top 5. He will have 3 films in the top 5 list, with 2.0 continuing to stay right on top. Yes, War 2 will likely end up as a flop, and become a rare film to not recover its budget at a time when non-theatrical revenues ensure that most films turn a profit. Lok Sabha discusses Shubhanshu Shukla's space mission: Indian on moon will herald Viksit Bharat in 2040, says Jitendra Singh
An Indian astronaut will herald Viksit Bharat by landing on the moon in 2040, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said on Monday (August 18, 2025) as the Lok Sabha took up the discussion on astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla's space sojourn. Initiating a discussion on 'India's first astronaut aboard the International Space Station — Critical role of the space programme for Viksit Bharat by 2047', Mr. Singh said Prime Minister Narendra Modi undertook space sector reforms after assuming office in 2014. Mr. Singh, the Minister of State in the PMO, said after opening up the space sector for private players in 2020, India's space economy has already reached $8 billion and would touch $45 billion in the next decade. Parliament Monsoon Session: Follow highlights on August 18, 2025 He said India will undertake an uncrewed space mission involving a robot 'Vyommitra' in 2026, followed by its maiden human spaceflight – Gaganyaan – in 2027. "India will set up its own Bharat Antariksh Station in 2035 and in 2040, an Indian astronaut will set foot on the moon," Mr. Singh said. "Modi ji's dream of Viksit Bharat in 2047 will be heralded a few years in advance from the moon. An Indian on moon will announce the heralding of Viksit Bharat," Mr. Singh said. The discussion remained inconclusive as the House was adjourned due to vociferous protests by the Opposition. Also Read | Shubhanshu Shukla returns to India; likely to meet PM Modi All Indians proud of Shukla's space mission aboard ISS: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor Congress leader Shashi Tharoor lauded Grp. Capt. Shukla's feat on Monday (August 18, 2025) and said all Indians are proud of his recent mission that will help serve as a powerful symbol of India's ambitions in human spaceflight. He also said Grp. Capt. Shukla's 'historic flight' has inspired a new generation to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, maths and space studies — all essential for sustaining India's long-term space goals. 'Since the Opposition are not participating in the special discussion, let me say how proud all Indians are of the recent mission of Commander Shubhanshu Shukla to the International Space Station (ISS). It served as a stepping stone to our nation's own human spaceflight program, Gaganyaan. 'Shukla's mission provided ISRO invaluable hands-on experience and data that cannot be replicated in simulations. His first-hand observations on pre-launch procedures, spacecraft systems, and the psychological and physiological effects of microgravity are crucial for de-risking and refining the Gaganyaan mission,' Mr. Thaoor said in a post on X. The Congress leader said the mission allowed for the testing of Indian systems and protocols in a real-life space environment. The numerous scientific experiments, including studies on human health in space and plant growth, will provide technological and scientific validation that will directly help design the life-support and medical systems for Gaganyaan, he noted. 'Shukla's mission, conducted in partnership with international agencies, reinforced India's role in global space diplomacy. It demonstrates India's willingness and capability to engage in multilateral space efforts and opens doors for future joint research and investment. 'Commander Shukla's historic flight serves as a powerful symbol of India's ambitions in human spaceflight. It has captured the nation's imagination, inspiring a new generation to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, maths and space studies — all essential for sustaining India's long-term space goals. Well done!' the former Union Minister said in his post. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju earlier urged the opposition parties to participate in a discussion in the Lok Sabha on Grp. Capt. Shukla's successful mission to the ISS and India's strides in the space sector. 'Our hero astronaut Group Captain Subhanshu Shukla has returned home after a successful mission to International Space Station. Parliament will honour him with a special discussion on his historic milestone and India's growing space ambitions in our journey towards Viksit Bharat,' Mr. Rijiju said in a post on X. He urged the members to participate in the same spirit as they had during a debate on Operation Sindoor. 'I hope that all the members will celebrate the achievements of the scientists in the same manner in which they lauded the valour of the armed forces in Operation Sindoor,' Mr. Rijiju said. The government has proposed a special discussion in the Lok Sabha on the subject, 'India's first astronaut aboard the International Space Station — Critical role of the space programme for Viksit Bharat by 2047' — to mark Grp. Capt. Shukla's space sojourn.
