Wall Street's main indexes jumped to around one-month highs on Thursday, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq leading gains, as strong quarterly results from heavyweights Microsoft and Meta pointed to a resilient outlook for the technology sector.
Microsoft surged 9% to its highest level since late January, driven by an upbeat quarterly growth forecast for its cloud-computing business Azure. The jump helped the stock surpass Apple to became the world's most valuable company
Meta Platforms gained 5.6% after posting higher-than-expected revenue on the back of a strong advertising performance.
The ongoing tech earnings represent a "critical inflection point" for the market, said Joe Tigay, portfolio manager of Rational Equity Armor Fund.
"Microsoft, Amazon, and their peers aren't just reporting numbers, they're revealing whether businesses are doubling down on cloud and IT or pulling back amid trade wars and economic uncertainty."
The fallout from erratic shifts in US trade policy has been the dominant theme this earnings season, with many companies slashing or withdrawing their profit outlooks. Still, S&P 500 first-quarter earnings are seen growing 12.9% on an annual basis, per LSEG data.
Results from megacaps Amazon.com and Apple are due after markets close. Amazon shares were up 2.9%.

Wall Street mixed with focus on US-China trade talks

NEW YORK: Wall Street's main indexes were mixed on Monday as investors watched a fresh round of US-China negotiations aimed at mending a trade rift that has rattled financial markets for much of the year. Top officials from both countries have kicked off discussions at London's Lancaster House, looking to get back on track with a preliminary trade agreement struck last month that had briefly cooled tensions between the world's largest economies. 'I think it'll be a watered down deal, but it'll be a deal, and that would alleviate some of the fear factors over tariffs,' said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Spartan Capital Securities. Hopes of more trade deals between the US and its major trading partners, along with upbeat earnings and tame inflation data, helped US equities rally in May, with the S&P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq notching their best monthly gains since November 2023. The S&P 500 remains a little more than 2% below all-time highs touched in February, while the Nasdaq is about 3% below its record peaks reached in December. At 11:39 a.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 63.46 points, or 0.15%, to 42,699.41, the S&P 500 gained 4.89 points, or 0.08%, to 6,005.25 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 59.40 points, or 0.30%, to 19,589.36. Among market movers, shares of McDonald's fell 1.4% after Morgan Stanley downgraded the stock to 'equal-weight' from 'overweight'. Five of the 11 major S&P 500 sub-sectors fell, with the financials sector, down 0.8%, declining the most. On the flip side, information technology stocks advanced 0.4%. Most megacap and growth stocks were up. Nvidia gained more than 1%. Tesla was down marginally after brokerage Baird downgraded the stock to 'neutral'. Warner Bros Discovery shares jumped 7.3%, the most on the S&P 500, after the company said it would separate its studios and streaming business from its fading cable television networks. Robinhood Markets fell 4.5% after S&P Dow Jones Indices left S&P 500 constituents unchanged in its latest rebalancing, following recent speculation that the online brokerage would be added to the benchmark index.

Apple unveils new softwares

Apple said on Monday it will open up the underlying technology it uses for Apple Intelligence and announced an overhaul of its operating systems. The tone and content of the presentations at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference focused more on incremental developments, including live translations for phone calls, that improve everyday life rather than the sweeping ambitions for AI that Apple's rivals are marketing. Apple software chief Craig Federighi said the company is opening up the foundational AI model that it uses for some of its own features to third-party developers. "This work needed more time to reach our high quality bar," Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering, said of the delays of some features such as improvements to the Siri virtual assistant. In an early demonstration of how partners could improve Apple apps, the company added image generation from OpenAI's ChatGPT to its Image Playground app, saying that user data would not be shared with OpenAI without a user's permission. Apple is facing an unprecedented set of technical and regulatory challenges as some of its key executives kicked off the company's annual software developer conference on Monday. Shares of Apple, which were flat before the conference, slipped 1.5% after executives took the stage in Cupertino, California. Federighi also said Apple plans a design overhaul of all of its operating systems. Apple's redesign of its operating systems centered on a design it calls "liquid glass" where icons and menus are partially transparent, a step Apple executives said was possible because of the more powerful custom chips in Apple devices versus a decade ago. Federighi said the new design will span operating systems for iPhones, Macs and other Apple products. He also said Apple's operating systems will be given year names instead of sequential numbers for each version. That will unify naming conventions that have become confusing because Apple's core operating systems for phones, watches and other devices kicked off at different times, resulting in a smattering of differently numbered operating systems for different products.

Handheld 'ROG Xbox Ally' devices unveiled

Microsoft on Sunday unveiled its first Xbox-branded handheld gaming devices, touting them as a way to play its vast library of titles anywhere, as reported by AFP. Two ROG Xbox Ally models made in a partnership with Taiwan-based ASUS will be available by the year-end holiday season, Xbox president Sarah Bond said during an online event showcasing games heading for the platform. "The Xbox Ally is an Xbox you can hold in your hands, bringing together the power of Xbox and the freedom of Windows," Bond said. "On this Xbox, you can play games across your entire library, including all the Windows PC game stores from Xbox and to Steam, GOG (Good Old Games platform) and Ubisoft Connect." The peek at Xbox Ally came just days after the release of Nintendo's Switch 2, the handheld console that could score record early sales for the Japanese Super Mario creator. The Nintendo device, which features a bigger screen and more processing power, is an upgrade to the Switch that became a global phenomenon with hit games such as "Animal Crossing." Microsoft promised to disclose pricing and release date details for Xbox Ally in the coming months. Both Xbox handhelds appeared similar to Microsoft console controllers in terms of buttons, toggles and grips but looked elongated to provide room for center screens. "When you power on your Xbox Ally, you'll boot directly into the Xbox full screen experience, a new feature optimized specifically for handheld gaming," Microsoft said in a release. "The Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X are perfect for players looking to take an approachable gaming experience with you during travels – – whether it's between airports, or between the comfiest chairs in the living room."
