HM Amit Shah in Chhattisgarh: Forensic education, Maoist crackdown on agenda
Raipur: Union Home Minister Amit Shah begins his two-day visit to Chhattisgarh on Sunday, with a packed itinerary focusing on forensic science education and internal security operations.
HM Shah is scheduled to arrive at Raipur Airport around 1.40 p.m. He will head directly to Naya Raipur, where he will attend a 'Bhoomi Pujan' ceremony at 2 p.m., followed by the foundation stone laying of the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) campus at 3.15 p.m.
The upcoming NFSU Raipur campus will be constructed on a 40-acre site at an estimated cost of Rs 350 crore. Although the permanent infrastructure will take time to complete, academic sessions are expected to begin in 2025-26 from a temporary facility, for which HM Shah will lay the foundation today. Originally established as the Gujarat Forensic Sciences University in 2008, NFSU was upgraded to a national institution through an Act of Parliament in 2020.
It offers specialised courses in forensic science, investigative techniques, and criminology. Notably, in 2023, it expanded its global footprint by opening its first overseas campus in Uganda.
Union Home Minister Shah is also scheduled to chair a meeting in Raipur with Directors General and Additional Directors General of Police from neighbouring states to review inter-state security coordination. Later in the evening, he will also hold a review meeting on the anti-Maoist campaign in Chhattisgarh.
On June 23, he will travel to Narayanpur, where he is expected to meet personnel at the BSF (Border Security Force) camp at 1.45 p.m. to review anti-Naxal operations. His return to Raipur is scheduled for 3.20 p.m., with departure set for 4.30 p.m.
HM Shah's visit underscores the Centre's focus on strengthening forensic capabilities and reviewing on-ground security efforts in Naxal-affected regions.
The Union Home Minister's two-day tour of Chhattisgarh signals renewed political and operational focus on the state's long-standing battle against Naxalism.
Following key engagements on Sunday, HM Shah is slated to visit the Abujhmad region on June 23, where he will interact directly with local villagers -- an area symbolically and strategically significant in the government's anti-Naxal campaign. This visit comes barely three months after his previous appearance in the state, when he attended the Pandum closing ceremony in Bastar and chaired a crucial meeting in Raipur with top officials of the CRPF, BSF, and police to assess counterinsurgency progress.
HM Shah has maintained that Naxalism will be eradicated from the country by March 31, 2026 -- a deadline now less than a year away. With the BJP government under Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai intensifying its operations, the past few months have seen a notable surge in encounters, with over 400 Naxals reportedly neutralised since the government took charge.

Chhattisgarh: Two Surrendered Maoists Abducted, Murdered in Bijapur District
The shadow of insurgency deepened once again in Chhattisgarh's conflict-hit Bijapur district, as Maoist rebels executed two civilians, who had surrendered earlier. The two were murdered in a late-night assault on Saturday. Both the victims were recently surrendered Maoists. They had laid down arms only months ago in hopes of rebuilding a peaceful life. The attack occurred in Empur village under the Pamed police station area, where a group of armed Maoists abducted the men from their homes. "Their bruised and lifeless bodies were later found in the nearby area. The victims have been identified as Samaiya, a former Maoist who surrendered earlier this year, and Veko Deva, a resident of Empur village," Chandrakant Governa, Additional Superintendent of Police, Bijapur, told IANS. Both men were abducted from their homes in the Naxal-affected villages of Sendrabor and Empur by a group of armed Maoists, the officer said. According to local sources, they were brutally assaulted before being executed. Their bodies were later dumped in the village, triggering panic among residents. A group of armed Maoists stormed the residence of a surrendered cadre late Saturday evening. The victim, along with another villager, was forcibly taken away and later executed on suspicion of being a police informer, they said. "The bodies were discovered early Sunday, prompting the Bijapur police to dispatch a verification team to the site," the police officer said. This latest act of violence comes amid intensified anti-Maoist operations across the state. Security forces have recently launched coordinated offensives such as Operation Black Forest and Operation Kagar, resulting in the elimination of several high-ranking Maoist leaders, including CPI(Maoist) General Secretary Nambala Keshava Rao alias Basavaraju. This marks the fifth targeted killing in the district in just seven days, underscoring a dangerous escalation in retaliation tactics as Maoists react to intensified security operations in the region. These successes, however, appear to have provoked retaliatory attacks by the insurgents, who have increasingly targeted civilians and surrendered cadres. The killings also coincide with Union Home Minister Amit Shah's two-day visit to Chhattisgarh, during which he is expected to review the state's counterinsurgency strategy and meet with security personnel in Narayanpur. Police officials have reiterated their commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice and ensuring the safety of civilians in conflict-affected zones. Maoist killed in Bijapur encounter was a mid-day meal cook in Chhattisgarh govt school, say Basta police
RAIPUR: One of the seven Maoists killed during an anti-Naxal operation earlier this month in Bijapur district of Bastar division worked as a cook in a govt school, police revealed on Saturday. Seven Maoists were killed in multiple encounters by a joint team of security personnel during an anti-Naxal operation in Indravati National Park area of Bijapur between June 4 and June 7. While one of them was identified as Mahesh Kudiyam, who served as an active party member of the national park area committee of Maoists, it was later known that he was working as an assistant cook at a primary school in Irpagutta village too. The matter came to light on Saturday when few villagers from Irpagutta claimed before a scribe that Kudiyam was not associated with the Maoist organisation, rather worked as a cook in a village school for preparing mid-day meal. It was found that Kudiyam also got remuneration in his bank account and was appointed by the village school management committee. 'The circumstances under which Mahesh Kudiyam came in contact with senior Maoist leaders including Central Committee member Gautam and State Committee member Bhaskar, are currently under investigation. Following exchanges of fire between security personnel and Maoists, the bodies of seven cadres were recovered. Among the deceased were two senior Maoist commanders Narasimha Chalam alias Sudhakar - a Central Committee member of CPI (Maoist) carrying cash reward of Rs 40 lakh and Bhaskar Rao, a State Committee member who carried Rs 20 lakh reward. One of the other recovered bodies was identified as Mahesh Kudiyam who worked as a cook and continued his association with Maoists. He carried Rs 1 lakh cash reward. Police have once again urged all individuals directly or indirectly associated with the banned organisation to immediately sever all such ties. 'Continued association with this extremist outfit poses a serious threat not only to public safety and regional peace but also to the lives and future of those involved,' police said.

Gujarat unveils electronics component manufacturing policy, offers Rs 12.5-crore aid for centres of excellence and research
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Sunday announced an electronics component manufacturing policy aimed at transforming the state into a global hub for electronics manufacturing by focusing on bridging the talent gap, promoting innovation, and offering support for research and development initiatives. A media release from the chief minister's office said that recognised institutions based in Gujarat would be eligible for assistance of up to Rs 12.5 crore from the state government to establish centres of excellence, finishing schools, or applied research laboratories, adding that the policy would boost investment in key segments such as multi-layer and HDI printed circuit boards, lithium-ion cells, SMD (surface mount device) passive components, display and camera modules, electronic parts, and the additional machinery required for their production. Under the policy, projects approved and supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) will be eligible for 100 per cent central assistance when established in Gujarat. 'Hence, MeitY-approved projects set up in the state will receive dual incentive benefits, one from the Central Government and another from the State Government,' the release read. Applications to avail of benefits under the policy, to be implemented by the Gujarat State Electronics Mission, must be submitted by July 31. The release added that the Gujarat Electronics Component Manufacturing Policy 2025 (GECMS-2025) is thoroughly aligned with the central government's electronics component manufacturing scheme, with which the state scheme will also share its duration. Projects under development or proposed in Gujarat will also be eligible for incentives under this policy. The policy will apply to units other than those receiving assistance under Gujarat Electronics Policy 2022-28. Units availing of benefits under the latest policy will not be eligible under the Gujarat Electronics Policy 2022-28. 'Gujarat's GECMS-2025 ensures a 100 per cent top-up on central support and guarantees timely disbursement of assistance. Also, once a project receives approval under the ECMS from MeitY, it will automatically become eligible for the same grant-in-aid in Gujarat. The State Government will disburse its incentive within 30 days of the Central Government releasing its assistance,' the release read. 'Gujarat has established itself as a leading manufacturing and automobile hub in India's industrial landscape. With four semiconductor plants now operational in the state, the newly announced policy will further strengthen the upstream industries. This development will reduce import dependency and improve technological resilience. The policy aims to attract over ₹35,000 crore in new investments and create substantial high-skilled employment opportunities within the state's electronics component manufacturing sector,' the release stated. Additionally, turnover-linked incentives will be provided for six years.
