"44 MLAs Agreed To Form Government": Manipur BJP MLA After Meeting Governor

NDTV28-05-2025

Guwahati/Imphal:
In a big political development in Manipur, BJP MLA and former minister Thokchom Radheshyam on Wednesday said "all 44 MLAs" have agreed to form the government as per the wishes of the people, but the final decision will be taken by the central leadership.
Mr Thokchom made the statement after he along with nine other MLAs met with Governor AK Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal.
"All 44 MLAs have agreed to form a popular government as per the wishes of the people. MLAs are ready to form the government. We have conveyed this to the Governor. We also discussed what solutions can be there for the issues," Mr Thokchom told reporters.
He said the 10 MLAs met the Governor as representatives of all other MLAs to explain their position.
"The Governor noted what we informed and will initiate actions in the best interests of the people," the MLA from Heirok assembly constituency said.
On when would the BJP MLAs stake claim to form a government, Mr Thokchom said a decision will be taken by the central leadership.
"We are a national party. However, to inform you that we are ready is similar to staking a claim to form the government. The Speaker has individually and jointly met with all the MLAs as well. There is no one who opposes the formation of a government," Mr Thokchom said.
He said people are facing too much hardship.
"In the previous term, two years have been lost due to Covid and in this term, another two years lost due to the conflict," the MLA said.
Former chief minister N Biren Singh also met the Governor on Tuesday.
BJP Rajya Sabha MP from Manipur, Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba, earlier this month expressed hope that a popular government would be formed in the state within the next two months. He asked all political leaders to unite in dealing with the challenges the state has been facing.
"The President's rule alone cannot resolve the prevailing issues. A popular government can function closely in tandem with the people and find a solution to the present ethnic crisis," he had told reporters.
The BJP's northeast In-charge Sambit Patra earlier this month visited the state's Kangpokpi and Churachandpur districts and met Kuki BJP MLAs Vungzagin Valte and Nemcha Kipgen.
Ms Kipgen was the only woman minister in the then Biren Singh government.

Bengaluru stampede: CM Siddaramiah, PM Modi, RCB, BCCI express grief

Eleven individuals lost their lives and 33 were injured in a stampede outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium, where a large crowd had gathered to see the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team following its first Indian Premier League (IPL) title win. According to reports, thousands had assembled outside the stadium, and police attempted to manage the situation. Force was used as crowds surged against the entrance gates. Eyewitnesses stated that fans arrived in large numbers at the felicitation venue. Visuals showed police personnel moving the injured and unconscious to nearby hospitals using ambulances. An RCB fan outside the stadium said, "I don't know what we did had tickets." Another, Prashant Shetty, said, "We came to watch our stars. I bought tickets for the function but was not even able to enter the stadium. Police suddenly blocked all the roads and closed all the entrances to the venue, and suddenly they started lathi-charging near the main gate." RCB extends condolences to the affected families, ''We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings all over Bengaluru in anticipation of the team's arrival this afternoon. The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us. RCB mourns the tragic loss of lives and extend our heartfelt condolences to the affected families. Immediately upon being made aware of the situation, we promptly amended our program, and followed, the guidance and advice of the local administration. We urge all our supporters to please stay safe.'' IPL chairman Arun Dhumal said, "We spoke to the management when we got to know about the situation and they assured that they will finish the ceremony quickly. This is definitely sad and tragic. RCB officials assured me that they will wind up the celebrations now." He added, "... Officials inside weren't aware about what happened outside. They assured me they will wrap it up inside. It is very sad and tragic. Heartfelt condolences... We are not even aware whether someone has planned this event - how come such a huge crowd came to the stadium?" "I am not in a fault finding mission at this moment without knowing the complete fact. Whenever these kinds of events are being organised, if you take the example of how BCCI organised such victory celebration after India won the T20 World Cup in West Indies last year, there was a thorough planning with local cricket association. Not a single untoward incident occurred because all the protocols were duly followed.", BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told NDTV. Saikia added, "When one organises a victory celebration of this and security measures need to be taken." BCCI vice-president and Congress MP Rajeev Shukla said, "This can happen in any state, and the ruling party should not be blamed for it. It should not be politicised. If this happens in a BJP-ruled state, we should not blame them. The crowd was huge. I spoke to the franchise, and they also did not think that such a huge crowd would come, and this incident happened suddenly. Efforts are being made to provide maximum help to the families of the deceased." PM condones the incident Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences in a post shared by the Prime Minister's Office on X: "The mishap in Bengaluru is absolutely heartrending. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that those who are injured have a speedy recovery." Karnataka CM expresses grief Chief Minister Siddaramaiah posted, "Deeply shocked by the tragic loss of lives in the stampede during the RCB victory celebrations near Chinnaswamy Stadium. A moment of joy has been eclipsed by sorrow. I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. Precautionary measures were taken by not allowing a victory parade, but the crowd surge near the stadium led to this tragedy. I urge everyone to always prioritise safety — above excitement, celebration, or crowd fervour." Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge posted, "I am deeply saddened by the tragic stampede in Bengaluru during the celebrations of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL 2025 victory. The loss of precious lives and the injuries sustained by many in this unfortunate incident are profoundly distressing. My thoughts and prayers are with the families who lost loved ones, and I wish a speedy recovery to the injured." Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on X: "My condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. Wishing a swift and full recovery to all those injured. In this hour of grief, I stand with the people of Bengaluru. The Karnataka government must provide all possible support and relief to the affected families. This tragedy is a painful reminder: no celebration is worth a human life. Every safety protocol for public events must be reviewed and strictly enforced -- lives must always come first." Senior Congress leader BK Hariprasad said, "The incident in which more than 11 people, including women, died in a stampede during the RCB cricket team's victory parade in Bengaluru is extremely shocking and regrettable. The condition of some of the injured in the stampede is serious, and the government should take immediate action to provide them with appropriate treatment." Opposition slams state govt The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticised the Congress-led government in Karnataka, demanding that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Home Minister G Parameshwara accept responsibility for the incident. Former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said on X: "It is extremely painful to see innocent lives lost even before the celebrations could begin. The primary reason for this massive tragedy is the lack of proper planning and complete failure to take precautionary measures. The state government, led by @INCKarnataka, must take full responsibility for this disaster."

The Covid connection behind rising measles cases across the US

Post-Pandemic Drop in Vaccination Live Events Where Measles Is Spreading — and Why A Preventable Threat (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel Measles cases are surging across the United States in 2025, and a new study from Johns Hopkins University pinpoints a clear reason: childhood vaccination rates have dropped significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic — especially in counties now facing active to the study published in JAMA this week, nearly 80% of more than 2,000 U.S. counties analyzed showed a decline in routine measles vaccination among children. These declines are particularly concerning because herd immunity against measles requires at least 95% vaccination coverage to prevent the highly contagious virus from spreading."In national-level data, the problem looks small. But when you zoom in, it becomes obvious that many communities are dangerously under-vaccinated," said Dr. Lauren Gardner, infectious disease modeler at Johns Hopkins and lead author of the study. Gardner also led the university's renowned COVID-19 data of early June, more than 1,000 measles cases have been reported nationwide — the highest total in decades — with three confirmed deaths. Experts warn that if the trend continues, 2025 could become the worst year for measles in over 30 Johns Hopkins study compared kindergarten vaccination rates from the 2017–2020 school years to those from 2022–2024, revealing sharp post-pandemic declines in many areas. In places where kindergarten data wasn't available, comparable statistics were measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, ongoing international and domestic travel, coupled with declining vaccination rates, has allowed the disease to schools generally require two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine before kindergarten. But non-medical exemptions have reached record highs in the 2023–2024 school year, weakening community is currently one of the hardest-hit states, with 742 cases since January, mostly in the western County, the state's epicenter, has 411 cases. Though its vaccination rate increased slightly after the pandemic, it still sits at 82.4%, well below the herd immunity County (60 cases) and Yoakum County (20 cases) both fell under 95% nearby Lubbock County (53 cases), the rate dropped from just below 95% to 91.8% after the El Paso County, with relatively high coverage at 96.5%, saw a 2.1-point is also facing outbreaks in counties where vaccination has County, with 25 cases, saw a dramatic fall from 94% to 71%.Haskell County dropped from 83% to 65%, while Stevens County declined slightly to 90.5%.In Colorado, a measles outbreak linked to an international flight has affected six County, home to two cases, saw vaccination decline to 88.4%.El Paso County, with three cases, dropped nearly four points to 80%.North Dakota data was only available from 2022 onward, but some counties have seen troubling County, where the outbreak began, rose to 87.7% in 2023 but dropped again to 83.5% in County remained steady at around 92.7%, while Grand Forks County fell from 95.4% to 93.4% — just under the herd immunity officials emphasize that measles is entirely preventable through vaccination. The MMR vaccine is safe, effective, and has been proven to protect against outbreaks for decades. "We must show our language which is entirely different from BJP": RJD MP Manoj Kumar Jha on Rahul Gandhi's remark

New Delhi [India], June 4 (ANI): Commenting on Rahul Gandhi's statement in Madhya Pradesh, RJD MP Manoj Kumar Jha on Wednesday said the Opposition leaders must not avoid using the same language as the BJP, adding that they are currently in a fight with the ruling party on multiple fronts. Speaking to ANI, RJD MP Jha said, 'I believe there is a LoP who is also the main face of the INDIA alliance... We are fighting with the BJP on many levels. We are fighting ideological, political, theoretical, linguistic, and emotional battles with them. So, we must show that our language and expressions are entirely different from those of the BJP. Otherwise, the same things happen... 'Bhains, Mangalsutra or Mujra.' 'This is my personal opinion that criticism is the most central discussion of politics,' he added. The row began when, addressing a convention of Congress workers in Bhopal, LoP Rahul Gandhi said, 'Now, I understand RSS-BJP well. They run away out of fear if slight pressure is put on them. When Trump called Modiji- Modiji kya kar rahe ho, Narender-Surrender and with 'ji hazooor', Narenderji followed Trump. In the 1971 war, the Seventh Fleet (which came from the US), India Gandhi said I will do whatever I have to do. This is the difference. This is their character; all of them are like this. Since the Independence movement, they have had the habit of writing letters of surrender.' This was followed by attacks from BJP leaders. Senior BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said, 'Rahul Gandhi has proved again that he does not have the ability and maturity to handle a post like the Leader of the Opposition and has shown his lack of wisdom and low standards,' said Trivedi. Reacting to Rahul Gandhi's remark on the BJP-RSS, Trivedi said, 'This is the same BJP and the same organisation that has reduced the once-invincible Congress to irrelevance in many states.' The BJP MP went on to list what he termed a series of 'surrenders' by Congress governments over the years. 'You said on 15 July 2011 that terrorism cannot be controlled -- that was a surrender to terrorism. After the 26/11 attacks, your government did not permit military retaliation. That, too, was a surrender. In 1971, despite having 93,000 Pakistani soldiers in custody, Indira Gandhi's government failed to reclaim PoK. In 1948, Nehru took the Kashmir issue to the UN and surrendered half of it. At Independence, one-third of the country was surrendered to Jinnah and the Muslim League,' Trivedi stated. BJP MP Sambit Patra said that Rahul Gandhi's speech in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday does not befit any 'civilised politician or any leader of the opposition.' On the other hand, Congress MP Pramod Tiwari defended Gandhi and said, 'Rahul Gandhi's arrow directly hit the target.' (ANI)
