Malayalam director Sanal Sasidharan alleges plagiarism in Mohanal-starrer 'Thudarum'

India Gazette9 hours ago

New Delhi [India], June 17 (ANI): Malayalam filmmaker Sanal Sasidharan has accused the makers of Mohanlal film 'Thudarum' of allegedly plagiarising the screenplay of his yet to be released film 'Theeyattam'.
'Thudarum' directed by Tharun Moorthy is considered among the successful Malayalam films of this year.
In a lengthy Facebook post, director Sasidharan accused the makers of Thudarum of plagiarising the screenplay of his film Theeyattam, which he wrote in 2020.
His social media post, written in Malayalam, loosely translates as 'I saw the movie Thudarum. It's made by stealing the skeleton of my screenplay, Theeyattam, which I wrote in 2020. The core of it remains safe, either because they (the makers of Thudarum) lacked the intelligence to understand its essence or because they deliberately avoided it in their attempt to rewrite it unrecognisably.'
Sasidharan claimed that his story revolved around an auto-rickshaw driver named Ambi who was framed by the police after someone committed murder inside his vehicle. This plot, he said, bears similarity to Mohanlal's 'Thudarum'.
Providing evidence for the alleged plagirism of his screenplay, the director said that makers of 'Thudarum' 'unnecessarily' used one of his dialogues in the film, which he considers a major 'slip-up' from the makers.
'A crucial dialogue from my screenplay, 'Konnaal paapam thinnaal theerum' (a proverb meaning, 'the sin of killing is absolved on eating') is used in this film despite being completely unnecessary. Even expert thieves, skilled at stealing without leaving a trace, can forget themselves due to certain whims. I felt the use of this dialogue was one such slip-up,' he explained as he levelled allegations against the makers of 'Thudarum'.
The 'S Durga' director also claimed that he had allegedly pitched his story to Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas and Sudheer Karamana.
Sanal Kumar Sasidharan also claimed that he had pitched his story to Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas and Sudheer Karamana to play crucial roles. However, the film was shelved for unknown reasons.
The filmmaker said that he will share his 'Theeyattam' screenplay on Facebook so that people can see the similarities.
'All of them have read the screenplay. Since five years is a long period, it's possible that they may have forgotten about it. I will be publishing my screenplay here soon,' he concluded his note.

Sanal Sasidharan is known for his films, including S Durga, Chola and Vazhakku.
As for 'Thudarum', the film was a blockbuster at the box office. This minimal budget film earned over Rs 150 crore worldwide. (ANI)

Accident videos to promote road safety

Kolkata: Kolkata traffic police has started uploading accident footage on their Facebook page to make people aware of the consequences of flouting norms. The accidents were recorded on CCTV cameras installed at major crossings across the city. The move comes at a time when three bikers and pillion riders lost their lives in just three days last week. Although used off and on since 2015, Lalbazar hinted at plans for a sustained online campaign using real-time accident footage. The fresh video to be uploaded shows a biker jumping the red light and crashing into another bike. The impact was such that both bikers were flung off their respective bikes. The video ends with a message to follow the red light and save lives. It has been viewed 5.4K times and shared 1K times, attracting over 250 comments. "We have found that the shock value of these footage can instil more traffic sense than hours of presentations on the values of safe driving," said a top officer at Lalbazar. Police sources said the whole idea was to explain the role of the real culprit. "We will highlight the exact traffic violation and the violator who did it," said a source.

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 17 (ANI): The Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoned former Congress MP DK Suresh for questioning in connection with an alleged fraud case involving Aishwarya Gowda. Gowda, who claimed to be Suresh's sister, was arrested by the ED on April 24 for her alleged involvement in a money laundering case. The ED officials had initially asked Suresh to appear at their office on Thursday, June 19, at 11 AM, but Suresh has requested to defer his appearance to June 23. Earlier, the probe agency stated that its officials had conducted searches at 14 locations related to the accused woman, Aishwarya Gowda and her accomplices and seized various incriminating materials valued at approximately Rs 2.25 crore. In a post on X dated April 26, the probe agency posted, 'ED Bengaluru has arrested Ms Aishwarya Gowda, under PMLA, 2002, on April 24, for being found involved in the offence of money laundering. After the arrest, she was produced before the Special Court (PMLA), and the Court was pleased to grant ED custody of the accused for 14 days.' The ED further mentioned that the searches, carried out on April 24 and 25 under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, led to the seizure of incriminating documents, digital devices, and cash. 'ED also conducted search operations at 14 locations related to Aishwarya Gowda and her accomplices on April 24 and 25, 2025, under the provisions of the PMLA, 2002. During the search operations, various incriminating documents, digital devices, and cash to the tune of approximately Rs 2.25 crore have been found and seized,' the post further read. Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai flags 48 new vehicles for Transport department

Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], June 17 (ANI): Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Tuesday flagged off 48 new government vehicles for the Transport Department, all bearing CG-02 registration numbers, marking a significant upgrade from the earlier reliance on rental vehicles. 'Today is a matter of pride for the Transport Department, as it has been provided with 48 new government vehicles, all with CG-02 registration numbers, in one go. Earlier, the department used rental vehicles and such, which didn't generate much excitement. But now, with these brand-new CG-02 numbered vehicles--48 in total--being handed over to the Transport Department, we extend our heartfelt congratulations,' Sai said. The initiative aims to strengthen road safety campaigns and improve emergency medical transport across the state. 'Certainly, these vehicles will help raise awareness about road safety and help reduce road accidents. They will also be effectively used to transport people to hospitals on time and save lives. So, many congratulations once again,' he added. Responding to a reporter's question about the notification for the 2026 census, Sai credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for fulfilling a long-pending commitment, contrasting it with the Congress party's inaction during its tenure. 'This is a very good decision, Honourable Prime Minister. The Congress party always talked about a caste-based census, but despite being in power for a long time, it could never carry it out. That task has now been completed by our Honourable Prime Minister -- thank you,' he said. On Saturday, CM Sai launched a scathing attack on the opposition Congress, accusing it of large-scale corruption during its tenure, in connection with the alleged Rs 2,000 crore liquor scam. Speaking to the media, CM Sai asserted that central and state agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate (ED), are conducting a comprehensive investigation into the case, and assured that strict action will be taken against those found guilty. 'For the entire 5 years, they have done corruption. Now, central and state agencies are investigating it, and action will definitely be taken against the culprits. If they feel that injustice is being done to them, then they can definitely go to court. And what can they do? They can do this only because they are in the opposition,' he said. This comes after the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Raipur Zonal Office provisionally attached three immovable properties worth Rs 6.15 crore under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in connection with the Chhattisgarh Liquor Scam case.
