According to Nath, pilot projects with Vetiver grass in Himachal Pradesh's districts such as Kullu, Mandi, and Kangra have shown a remarkable 60 per cent reduction in soil erosion, providing a proof of concept that could be replicated across other Himalayan states, including Uttarakhand.
What is Vetiver grass?
Can Vetiver prevent landslides?
Vetiver grass prevents landslides with its dense root system, which can grow up to three-four meters deep, even in poor soils. These roots form a strong underground network that binds the soil particles together, increasing shear strength and significantly reducing the risk of slope failure. Unlike many plants whose roots spread horizontally, vetiver's roots grow straight down, helping stabilize steep slopes without competing with nearby vegetation.
How does Vetiver act as natural barrier?
On slopes and hillsides, especially in areas with heavy rainfall or human disturbance, surface erosion can quickly evolve into larger landslides. Vetiver acts as a natural barrier by slowing down surface water flow and trapping sediments. Its hedgerow planting technique is particularly effective: rows of Vetiver planted along contour lines create a filter that prevents water from gaining destructive speed downhill, thereby reducing surface runoff and erosion.
Vetiver is low maintenance and has high resilience
Vetiver is highly resilient—it can tolerate drought, heavy rainfall, poor soils, and even fire. It requires minimal maintenance once established, making it ideal for use in remote or rugged terrain. Its non-invasive nature (it does not spread aggressively or become weedy) makes it a safe ecological choice for long-term slope stabilisation.
How can they be used? The actual process
The process begins with selecting erosion-prone areas such as slopes, riverbanks, or farmland and preparing the land by clearing debris and marking contour lines—these are horizontal lines that follow the natural level of the land to reduce water runoff speed.
Vetiver is then planted in single rows or hedgerows along these contours, with each plant spaced about 10–15 cm apart and rows placed 1 to 2 meters apart vertically depending on the slope.
Once planted, the Vetiver slips are watered and cared for during the initial weeks, ideally before the rainy season for natural irrigation.
As the grass grows, its deep, vertical roots — reaching up to 3-4 meters — anchor the soil firmly, while the dense above-ground foliage slows down surface water, traps sediment, and prevents topsoil from being washed away.
Over time, the hedgerows become thicker and more effective, creating a sustainable, low-maintenance barrier that significantly reduces erosion and helps stabilise the land.
Has Vetiver been used in landslide-prone regions?
Vetiver grass is increasingly used in landslide mitigation projects in hilly and mountainous regions, including parts of India (e.g., the Western Ghats, Northeast India, and Himalayan foothills), Nepal, Southeast Asia, and Africa. It's also applied along road embankments, riverbanks, railway cuttings, and mining sites, where soil disturbance increases the risk of slope failure.

The IMD will set up the wind profilers in 10 locations – Amritsar, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Patna, Varanasi, Lucknow, Mohanbari, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, and Thiruvananthapuram Building on its 'Mission Mausam' to sharpen weather forecasts, the IMD has floated a global tender to procure, install and commission 10 wind profiler systems at multiple sites across India. Wind profilers are like advanced doppler radars that provide the deepest coverage of the atmosphere, collecting data on wind speed, direction, and conditions at various levels above the ground. Each system is expected to last for at least 10 years. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has identified 10 locations for the installation – Amritsar, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Patna, Varanasi, Lucknow, Mohanbari (Assam), Bhubaneswar, Calicut, and Thiruvananthapuram spanning the length and breadth of the country. Once installed, these wind profilers will significantly boost India's atmospheric observation network, improving weather forecasting and climate monitoring capabilities nationwide. The data will also be useful for airline planning and detection of turbulence during flight. These typically work by transmitting electromagnetic waves along the device's antenna systems. In its pre-bid security requirements, the tender document – accessed by News18, mandates pre-dispatch inspections, adherence to technical specifications, and compliance with the Centre's 'Make in India' policy. While the deal is open to both Indian and foreign manufacturers, preference will be given to local suppliers, micro and small enterprises as well as startups. A pre-bid conference will be held at the IMD headquarters in New Delhi, with bid submissions to be made exclusively via the government's e-procurement portals. WHAT IS THE RS 2,000-CRORE 'MISSION MAUSAM'? Last September, the central government launched the Rs 2,000 crore 'Mission Mausam' to make India 'weather ready' and 'climate smart' in wake of increasing extreme events, which have made tropical weather far more erratic and harder to predict. As part of the project, the IMD also outlined plans to add vertical wind profiles and radiometers at 15 locations, as well as increase the number of radiosondes from the existing 54. These instruments provide day and night data for wind direction, temperature, and humidity up to an altitude of 12 km, every 15 minutes. According to IMD director-general Dr Mrityunjay Mohapatra, the mission will improve weather forecasting in cities and have better spatial resolution than the existing 12 km. 'This will also enable IMD to issue Nowcast warnings for rains an hour in advance – up from three hours at present," Mohapatra said. The latest alert, covering southern Washington County and southern Ozaukee counties, has been issued until 8:15 a.m. as heavy rain slowly moves north. According to Country Herald, some areas have already received 5 to 9 inches of rainfall overnight, with additional downpours expected before sunrise. Due to the severe flash floods that impacted the Milwaukee area, the Wisconsin State Fair was forced to close early on Saturday. Flooding affected multiple counties in southeast Wisconsin on Sunday morning, with videos online showing vehicles stranded in high water, fairgoers evacuating, and others enjoying the rain despite the conditions. Officials announced that Tunnel Entrance F was closed due to the storm and advised visitors to use the Main Stage or Turn 4 exits to reach the state fair parking lots. Severe flooding swept across much of southeast Wisconsin from the evening of August 9 through the morning of August 10, with some parts of the metro area receiving over 6 inches of rain in the past 24 hours. Anyone in an impacted area is advised not to travel unless fleeing a flooded area or following evacuation orders.
