What's Next for Sean Combs?

New York Times03-07-2025
The federal trial of Sean Combs ended on Wednesday with the music mogul acquitted of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking, the most serious charges he had faced, but convicted on two counts of transporting prostitutes to participate in drug-fueled sex marathons.
Though Mr. Combs and his lawyers were jubilant after the acquittals on the more severe charges, he still awaits sentencing at a date that is not yet scheduled.
Here is what is next for Mr. Combs:
Before 11 a.m. on Wednesday morning, a jubilant Mr. Combs and his family were clapping and cheering his legal team after what they considered a victory in court. But a question remained: Would Judge Arun Subramanian grant him bail to go free as he waited for his sentencing hearing?
The defense proposed a $1 million bond, co-signed by Mr. Combs, his mother, his sister and Sarah Chapman, the mother of his oldest daughter, Chance. His passport would be surrendered, and his travel would be restricted to the judicial districts around New York, Los Angeles and Miami. He would also agree to drug testing.
'Today, the jury unambiguously rejected the government's allegations that Mr. Combs ran a yearslong criminal enterprise or engaged in sex trafficking — the core of the government's case,' the defense wrote.
In a letter filed by the government, prosecutors argued that Mr. Combs should remain in detention in part because during the trial 'the defendant embraced the fact that he was a habitual drug user who regularly engaged in domestic abuse.'

TSMC Trade Secrets Leak Puts Japan's Tokyo Electron on Hot Seat

A Taiwanese investigation into the possible theft of chip technology at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is putting a low-profile, lesser-known tech linchpin in Japan under unusual scrutiny. Among the six people arrested by Taiwanese prosecutors for allegedly stealing trade secrets from the world's largest contract chipmaker was a former employee at Tokyo Electron Ltd. Now, the Japanese company — one of the world's biggest suppliers of chipmaking tools — is struggling to address the potential fallout with one of its most important customers and with governments in Tokyo and Taipei.

Sean ‘Diddy' Combs wants to relaunch his music career at Madison Square Garden, his attorney says

Disgraced rapper Sean 'Diddy' Combs is plotting a major career comeback following his not guilty verdict last month, according to his attorneys. 'He's going to be back at Madison Square Garden,' his lead attorney, Marc Agnifilo, told CBS News' Jericka Duncan in his first network interview since Combs' highly publicized trial in New York. Duncan asked the attorney whether the mogul had discussed a return to music, despite facing a jail term of 20 years. 'Honestly, he has not. But one thing he said was that he was going to be back in Madison Square Garden. He said, 'I'm going to be back in Madison Square Garden.'' 'Doing what?' Duncan asks. Agnifilo responds, 'I guess being on stage, and I said, 'I'll be there.'' A grand jury acquitted Combs of the two most serious charges against him, sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy, last month, which surrounded allegations that he coerced two long-term girlfriends into drug-fueled 'freak-offs' with hired male escorts. However, Combs was found guilty of two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, a lesser charge that carries a maximum of 10 years in prison for each conviction. Despite facing jail, Agnifilo said the singer was determined to reinstate himself in society and reclaim his musical empire. 'He wants people to know that he has reflected on the blessings that he's been given, the imperfections that I think he sees in himself. I think he wants to get out of jail and reestablish a loving present relationship with all of his seven children. He wants to take care of his mother.' When talking about his return to music, he said, 'I think he is someone who is always going to strive to do something exceptional and probably demanding and challenging.' Agnifilo stressed that Comb's main priorities now were to be reunited with his children and his mother. In a separate interview, Nicole Westmoreland, another attorney working for Combs' defense team, told CNN that 'conversations' had taken place with Trump officials about the possibility of clemency. 'It's my understanding that we've reached out and had conversations in reference to a pardon,' Westmoreland told CNN. When asked previously, the president seemed to consider that a pardon for Combs may be possible, though recent remarks suggested otherwise. 'He was essentially sort of half-innocent, I don't know what, he's still in jail or something,' President Trump said when asked about the Combs last week. 'He's celebrating a victory, but I guess it wasn't as good a victory. Probably, ugh, you know, I was very friendly with him, I got along with him – great. He seemed like a nice guy. I didn't know him well.' 'But when I ran for office, he was very hostile.' Trump said that Combs's comments at the time had 'clouded his judgment' and made the decision more difficult to make. The Independent approached the White House for comment on the matter.

Aubrey Plaza to star as Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss

Aubrey Plaza is set to star as Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss in a new biopic. Titled The Heidi Fleiss Story, the dark comedy will follow the final days leading up to Fleiss' 1993 arrest, when authorities exposed her high-end prostitution ring operating in Los Angeles, Deadline reports. Plaza will star in and produce the film through her company, Evil Hag. The project marks her first major role since the death of her husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena, in January this year. Fleiss rose to prominence in the early 1990s for allegedly running a secretive operation that catered to celebrities, media executives and other powerful figures. She was said to have taken over the business from her mentor, convicted madam Elizabeth 'Madam Alex' Adams, and expanded it into a multimillion-dollar enterprise. That empire collapsed in June 1993, when Fleiss was arrested and later charged with pandering, tax evasion and money laundering. Prosecutors alleged she laundered more than $1.5 million (£1.1 million) through shell companies and false records. The case drew national headlines, fuelled by speculation over a list of high-profile clients. The list remains sealed to this day. Plaza has been gradually returning to public life following Baena's death by suicide. In February, she appeared on SNL50: The Anniversary Special, wearing a pink tie-dyed T-shirt - a subtle tribute to the couple's wedding-day attire. The pair had been together for more than a decade, but had separated in the months before Baena's death.
