Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy hits a shot during the pro-am prior to the BMW Championship, on Aug 13.
WASHINGTON - Masters champion Rory McIlroy said on Aug 13 he rejected the suggestion he could serve as playing captain at a Ryder Cup 'sometime soon,' saying he thinks combining roles is too onerous.
'I've been asked to do that, and I've turned it down,' the Northern Ireland star said, as he spoke to reporters prior to the US PGA Tour BMW Championship in Maryland.
McIlroy will spearhead the European challenge against the United States when the match play showdown is held at Bethpage Black in New York Sept 26-28.
Luke Donald will captain the Europeans and the US captain is Keegan Bradley, whose strong form in 2025 has the 39-year-old in 10th place in the qualification standings.
After he won the Travelers Championship, Bradley acknowledged he would consider casting himself as the first playing captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963.
But McIlroy says the demands on the captain are too great to mesh with a playing role.
'The idea of me being a playing captain sometime soon coming up has come up, and I've shot it down straight away,' McIlroy said.

'Because I don't think you can do it.
'I just think the commitments that a captain has – you think about the extra media that a captain has to do, you think about the extra meetings that the captains have to do with the vice captains, with the PGA of America, in Keegan's case, preparing your speech for the opening ceremony.
'Just there's a lot of things that people don't see that the captain does the week of the Ryder Cup, especially now that the Ryder Cup has become so big.'
McIlroy said the captain would also have less flexibility to play every session over the three days, which could rob a team of an in-form player for some sessions.
'Would you rather not have a player that has the flexibility to go twice if he's playing well?' McIlroy said.
'It's just my opinion, but I think it would just be very difficult to do.'
But McIlroy said he is as intrigued as anyone to see whether Bradley will take on the dual role.
'I definitely think he's one of the best 12 American players right now,' McIlroy said.
'That's why everyone is so interested and it's such a compelling case.
'I'm just as interested as everyone else to see how it all plays out.' AFP

Hutchinson agreed a five-year contract with the English Premier League club on the eve of their season opener against Brentford on Aug 17. The 21-year-old played 32 times for Ipswich as they were relegated from the Premier League last season, scoring three goals and providing two assists. 'I'm really excited to be here and can't wait to get started. I've played at the City Ground a few times and it's always felt like a hostile atmosphere, so I'm looking forward to playing here with the fans behind us,' Hutchinson said. 'I'm going to give it my all and I'm looking forward to the challenge as it's a new chapter for me, but I feel ready.' Since the end of last season, Forest have signed Switzerland international Dan Ndoye and Botafoga duo Igor Jesus and Jair Cunha. They also convinced captain Morgan Gibbs-White to sign a long-term contract amid reported interest from Tottenham. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. But the move for Hutchinson and a flurry of late transfer activity should ease his concerns ahead of a campaign that will feature Forest in Europa League action. Forest are close to an expected £30 million deal for Manchester City midfielder James McAtee, with Rennes forward Arnaud Kalimuendo also reportedly in London for a medical ahead of a £26 million move. The Tricky Trees are also working on a deal to sign midfielder Douglas Luiz in a permanent move from Juventus. Elsewhere, Brentford signed Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth for a reported £42 million ($58 million) on Aug 16 in a deal that could free up Yoane Wissa to leave the Bees. Ouattara, 23, scored 11 goals in 88 appearances for the Cherries, since joining from Lorient in 2023. Brentford confirmed the transfer is a club-record fee, surpassing the £30 million they spent on Igor Thiago in 2024. 'We're really happy to get Dango in. He's someone that we were aware and surprised could be available and, once we knew that signing him might be a possibility, we really focused on trying to get him in,' said Brentford boss Keith Andrews. 'We liked his Premier League experience, even at his young age, and he just hasn't found the rhythm yet because of a lack of consistent game time.' Brentford have lost of all of their manager, top scorer and captain from last season after finishing 10th in the Premier League. Thomas Frank left to manage Tottenham Hotspur, Bryan Mbeumo was snapped up by Manchester United and Christian Norgaard signed by Arsenal. Wissa could join that exodus with Newcastle United reportedly interested in the DR Congo international, who scored 19 Premier League goals last season. AFP

Tottenham Hotspur need to use ‘exceptional' Richarlison smartly, says Thomas Frank

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Tottenham Hotspur's Richarlison shaking hands with manager Thomas Frank after being substituted following his two-goal heroics on Aug 16. LONDON – Richarlison demonstrated how crucial he is to Tottenham Hotspur with a sublime brace in their 3-0 English Premier League home win over Burnley, with manager Thomas Frank saying it was vital to manage the Brazilian smartly to continue getting the best out of him. The forward struck in the 10th minute, converting a cross from Mohammed Kudus, before the pair combined again on the hour mark for a spectacular second goal, as Richarlison showcased his aerial prowess with an acrobatic effort. 'To have a striker who takes those two chances helps us to win the game. He deserves a lot of praise... Today, he was exceptional,' Frank told reporters. 'His work rate, driving the team, link-up play, hold-up play, just dominating. And then the two finishes. I'm so happy for him. Again, the performance department and medical department have done a top job to build him up... 'I'm a little bit disappointed that it's so early that we've had the goal of the season, but it must be a contender!' In just one match, Richarlison has netted half as many league goals as he managed in the 2024-25 season, when he made only 15 league appearances and spent extended spells on the sidelines due to calf and hamstring injuries. 'I think it's fair to say that he hasn't played every game in the last three or four seasons because of injuries, so I think we need to be smart with him,' said Frank, who was appointed Tottenham manager in June. I don't know. That can be getting out earlier, that can be coming from the bench, that can be various ways, that can be playing five games in a row. 'We need to get to know him as well. That's the next thing. I don't know him.' After conceding just 16 times in 46 games in the Championship last season, the opening game of Burnley's top-tier return showed things will be much tougher for them defensively. Manager Scott Parker told the BBC: 'We were in the game, we started tentatively. We edged into it in the first half and there was a threat. For 60 minutes we're in it. 'We missed a big chance at 1-0 and then that's the ruthlessness of the league that they score again. Overall a lot of positives and something to work on for us... 'Early stages for us. The pressure rises every time you stand in this position. We've got a big challenge this year.' REUTERS
