Why These Market Forecasters Expect Stocks To End the Year at Record Highs
Deutsche Bank analysts led by Chief US Equity & Global Strategist Binky Chadha on Tuesday raised their year-end S&P 500 target to 6,550. That suggests about 10% upside from Tuesday's close. And it would be nearly 7% above the index's record close from earlier this year. Investor positioning, they said, is close to neutral and assumes tariffs will be a slight drag on earnings growth this Wall Street forecasters see stocks closing out 2025 at record highs—despite a shaky start to the year. Deutsche Bank analysts led by Chief US Equity & Global Strategist Binky Chadha on Tuesday raised their year-end S&P 500 target to 6,550, a number suggesting about 10% upside from Tuesday's close. That would be nearly 7% above the index's record close from earlier this year. Investor positioning, they said, is close to neutral and assumes tariffs will be a slight drag on earnings growth this year. 'However, if there is confidence that tariff impacts will be modest and temporary, we expect discretionary investors to look through any slowing in growth and turn overweight in anticipation of a rebound,' they wrote. The analysts expect robust corporate demand to shrink the supply of stock on public markets. They forecast companies will spend $1.1 trillion on stock buybacks this year, thanks to resilient earnings. Deutsche Bank raised its estimate of the S&P 500's aggregate full-year earnings per share to $267 from $240. The firm entered the year forecasting index-level earnings of $282 per share. But it slashed that outlook in mid-April shortly after President Trump paused 'Liberation Day' tariffs for 90 days and lifted rates on Chinese goods to 145% at a minimum. Earnings, they estimated, would suffer from a prohibitively high effective tariff rate and the lingering possibility of a prolonged trade war. The outlook improved last month when the U.S. and China agreed to slash their respective tariff rates while officials negotiated a more comprehensive trade deal. Tensions between the world's two largest economies linger: This weekend each party accusing the other of violating their tentative agreement. Still, the White House's approach to tariff negotiations has some market watchers feeling optimistic. Deutsche Bank's analysts take the White House's decision to pause 'Liberation Day' tariffs just hours after they took effect, 'before the emergence of any legal barriers or economic or political pain,' as a sign that 'if negative impacts of tariffs do materialize, we will get further relents.' As such, Deutsche Bank expects this year's rally to 6,550 to benefit investors who bet on Trump relenting. 'Despite the rhetoric to the contrary, the 2018-2019 dynamic of repeated cycles of escalation and de-escalation predicated on the market looks to be alive and well.' Wall Street strategists see another 10% rally for the S&P 500 in 2025
After the S&P 500's (^GSPC) feverish return to near-all-time highs, a growing crowd of Wall Street strategists argues that the benchmark index has more room to run higher. On Monday, Deutsche Bank chief global strategist Bankim Chadha boosted his year-end S&P 500 target to 6,550 from 6,150. Chadha had previously downgraded his target to 6,150 from 7,000 amid Trump's tariff escalation. But now with the estimated US effective tariff rate moving lower from its April peak, Chadha sees fewer headwinds weighing on S&P 500 earnings growth this year than when he previously listed nine different ways tariffs could hurt the fundamental outlook for stocks. Chadha now predicts earnings per share for the S&P 500 hitting $267 this year, up from a prior forecast of $240, as "the direct and indirect drags from tariffs on earnings have shrunk significantly." The S&P 500 upgrade also included a nod to the belief among investors that should tariffs weigh on the markets, the administration will likely dial back tariffs — in the same fashion as they've done over the past month to stabilize markets. This newfound confidence was recently dubbed the "TACO" trade, an acronym for "Trump Always Chickens Out. "The administration relented earlier than we had anticipated, driven primarily by market reaction, and before the emergence of any legal barriers or economic or political pain," Chadha wrote. "This reinforces the view that if negative impacts of tariffs do materialize, we will get further relents." After 11 strategy teams cut their S&P 500 target amid the initial tariff launch, Deutsche Bank is now the fourth team to raise its target as Trump has dialed back his aggressive tariff stance. Read more: The latest news and updates on Trump's tariffs Chadha is one of several Wall Street strategists that has been defending a call for a roughly 10% rise in the S&P 500 over the past several days. FundStrat head of research Tom Lee believes stocks will rally to 6,600 by the end of the year. In recent research, Lee has cited the market's resilience to tariff headlines, as seen by rising stocks on Monday despite boiling trade tensions with China and increased tariffs on steel and aluminum. Lee also points out that investor sentiment, as measured by the American Association of Individual Investors, hasn't fully rebounded. With more than $7 trillion in money market funds that could be deployed into the equity market, Lee argues the rally has further to run as more investors join the march higher. Morgan Stanley chief investment officer Mike Wilson also believes the S&P 500 will rally roughly 10% and end 2025 at 6,500. Wilson highlighted that analysts' revisions to their earnings estimates have started inflecting higher, meaning analysts are no longer slashing their outlook for corporate profits as they were at the peak of the recent tariff escalation. Read more: How to protect your money during turmoil, stock market volatility In a research note on Sunday, Wilson detailed in a chart that when revisions to earnings estimates are inflecting higher, as they are right now, the S&P 500 has typically increased by 13% in the next 12 months. Wilson also believes that while trade policy uncertainty will remain, its impact is diminishing. When the estimated effective US tariff rate shot from a little over 2% to more than 25% in April, the rate of change in tariffs was massive. Now, as Trump has scaled back tariffs, the moves in the estimated effective US tariff rate are no longer as aggressive. Wilson showed this by looking at how market volatility, as measured by the CBOE Volatility Index, or VIX, has moved lower in tandem with Bloomberg's US Trade Policy Uncertainty Index, which analyzes news articles for mentions of trade policy and uncertainty. "The bottom line is that while uncertainty remains high around the eventual tariff outcome, the rate of change on policy headwinds has become much less onerous." Wilson wrote. "This has reduced recession risk and is giving corporates and consumers more confidence in the forward looking outlook." Josh Schafer is a reporter for Yahoo Finance. Follow him on X @_joshschafer.

How the Smart Money Flies With Southwest Airlines (LUV) Stock Options
Investors with a shorter-term outlook may find an opportunity in Southwest Airlines (LUV). Last week, Deutsche Bank upgraded LUV from a Hold to a Buy rating and raised its 12-month price target significantly, from $28 to $40. This reflects growing confidence in the airline's strategic initiatives and their potential to drive meaningful growth. Easily unpack a company's performance with TipRanks' new KPI Data for smart investment decisions Receive undervalued, market resilient stocks right to your inbox with TipRanks' Smart Value Newsletter From an investment perspective, the current narrative surrounding Southwest may offer sufficient justification for considering exposure to LUV stock. Notably, the $40 price target allows for flexibility over a standard 12-month horizon, giving the investment thesis time to develop. Additionally, equity investments do not expire; while they can decline in value, they retain their intrinsic potential over time. With options, it's a whole different ballgame, which is why I don't think it's helpful to consider narratives or even financial performance and projections. The investing ecosystem focuses mainly on the 'why' of an opportunity. With options, the focus is on the 'how' — how much, how fast, how likely. Probabilities represent the most crucial aspect of trading derivatives, as options eventually expire. Therefore, whatever thesis you have must be positionally accurate within the allotted time period. As such, consistently successful options strategies require specific, granular data. In this regard, traditional analytical methodologies can be distracting. Still, if you're willing to let go of convention, a bullish options strategy on LUV stock is currently in play. What's most important about understanding the discipline of trading is that the market represents a dependent event; that is, future price action depends on prior price behaviors, volume, news, positioning, sentiment, liquidity stress, and a host of other catalysts. Essentially, the price of LUV stock or any other security is influenced by a prior chain of events. As such, it's imperative that traders treat the market not as a fresh shuffling of the cards, as though every trade setup is an independent event. Rather, the deck is already in motion, reflecting the news and catalysts that have been publicly revealed or exposed. Subsequently, market participants who keep track of the count (so to speak) have a tremendous advantage. Regarding LUV stock, over the past two months, the security printed a '6-4-D' market breadth sequence: six up weeks, four down weeks, with a net negative trajectory across the 10-week period. Using an AI-based algorithm, I'm able to determine that this sequence occurred 48 times in the trailing 10 years. More importantly, in nearly 67% of cases, the following week's price action results in upside, with a median return of 3.19%. Given that LUV stock closed at $33.38 on Friday, if the 6-4-D pattern's implications pan out as projected, the security may hit $34.44 in short order, perhaps within a week or two. If the bulls maintain control of the market, a push above $35 wouldn't be unreasonable. What makes the above setup so compelling is that, as a baseline, LUV barely features a positive bias. On any given week, the chance that a long position will be profitable is only 51.2%. That's calculated by taking the number of positive weeks divided by the total number of weeks in the dataset. Basically, the 6-4-D sequence improves the odds from a coin toss to a 67/33 wager in favor of the bullish speculator. If you're a numbers person, you're incentivized to take a shot here. Those interested in rolling the dice may consider buying the 33.50/35 bull call spread expiring June 20. This transaction involves purchasing the $33.50 call and subsequently selling the $35 call, for a net debit paid of $66. Should LUV stock rise through the short strike price at expiration, the maximum reward is $84, a payout of over 127%. Fair warning, this trade will be tight. Based on prior trends, the median positive performance from the 6-4-D sequence will have LUV stock trading around $34.70. That's more than enough to exceed the aforementioned trade's breakeven price of $34.16. However, it does fall a bit short of the $35 target. Granted, median performance also means that LUV stock can perform better than expected or worse. The risk here is multi-dimensional. While the chance of upside is higher, the magnitude of upside represents more of a guessing game. What could break the deadlock is that the $35 level is almost certainly a psychologically significant price target. Therefore, it wouldn't be surprising for the bulls to attempt to push toward that level, making the 33.50/35 bull spread attractive. Turning to Wall Street, LUV stock carries a Hold consensus rating based on six Buys, seven Holds, and four Sell ratings acquired over the past three months. The average LUV price target is $31.38, implying almost 6% downside risk over the next twelve months. Southwest Airlines is emerging as an increasingly compelling investment opportunity. For traders focused on shorter-term gains, however, LUV stock may be even more attractive in the near term. While its baseline probability of upside performance is only modestly above average, current market breadth indicators point to a potential strengthening trend. Given these signals, bullish investors may find added incentive to initiate a position. Disclaimer & DisclosureReport an Issue
