High-speed train services resume in northern France after Eurostar cancellations

The Suna day ago
PARIS: High-speed train travel in northern France has resumed after an electrical fault led to the cancellation of multiple Eurostar services and severe delays on Monday.
Seventeen Eurostar trains connecting Paris with London and other European destinations were cancelled due to an overhead cable fault on the line in northern France.
'The repair work was completed according to schedule, and this morning we are resuming normal traffic on the high-speed line,' a spokesperson for French rail operator SNCF confirmed.
While three Paris-London services remain cancelled on Tuesday, delays have eased compared to Monday's severe disruptions. Trains that operated on Monday were rerouted onto slower tracks, prolonging travel times for passengers.
The exact cause of the fault on the line between Moussy and Longueil remains unclear. This incident follows previous disruptions, including cable thefts in June that caused two days of service issues.
Eurostar has faced criticism over high ticket prices, particularly on the Paris-London route, during peak travel seasons. SNCF holds a majority stake in Eurostar, with minority shares owned by Belgian railways, Quebec's CDPQ, and US-based Federated Hermes. - AFP

Tawau Airport to get RM120.9mil upgrade

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah-based major road infrastructure construction player Azam Jaya Berhad has received a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from the Transport Ministry for a RM120.9mil contract to upgrade Tawau Airport. Under the LOA, Azam Jaya, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Pembinaan Azam Jaya Sdn Bhd, will undertake the project on a design and build basis. This includes preliminaries, design, and construction of terminal buildings and associated works. The contract spans three years, commencing on Aug 22, with completion expected by Aug 17, 2028. According to the company, the upgrading works at Tawau Airport represent a strategic initiative by the government to enhance the airport's capacity, operational efficiency, and overall service delivery. Located on the southeast coast of Sabah, Malaysia, Tawau Airport serves as a vital gateway for both domestic and international travellers. As one of only two airports in the state equipped with immigration counters for international arrivals, Tawau Airport plays a crucial role as a key transit hub in the region. In 2024, the airport ranked the eighth busiest in Malaysia, handling close to two million passenger movements, reflecting its growing significance in the nation's aviation network. The company stated that with passenger traffic increasing significantly in recent years, the ongoing upgrades are timely. These improvements are expected to elevate the comfort and experience of travellers while supporting the region's tourism growth and economic development. This latest contract will further strengthen Azam Jaya's unbilled order book, which stood at RM1.42bil as of March 31, 2025, providing healthy earnings and cash flow visibility through to 2028. Executive Director of Azam Jaya, Datuk Jessica Lo, said as a proud Sabah-grown company, they were honoured to be entrusted with this important project that supports the state's ongoing infrastructure development. She noted that the upgrading of Tawau Airport will not only enhance regional connectivity but also help accommodate the increasing demand for international travel to Sabah's east coast. "This contract is a valuable addition to our project portfolio and reinforces the trust placed in our ability to deliver large-scale developments," she said, adding that it also complements their ongoing involvement in the Pan Borneo Highway and further strengthens their footprint across Sabah. "With funding allocation for Sabah remaining a priority under Budget 2025, we believe there will be more opportunities to support the state's development," Lo added. In October last year, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that the upgrading of Tawau Airport would begin early 2025 at a cost of about RM130mil, with completion expected in three years. Sixteen companies were shortlisted for the project at that time, with the government in the process of selecting a main contractor.

HONG KONG: Cathay Pacific has announced a US$8.1 billion deal to purchase 14 Boeing 777-9 aircraft. The airline confirmed the order in a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange. Advertisement Cathay also secured the option to buy seven additional Boeing 777-9 jets. The new aircraft are expected to be delivered by 2034. Cathay currently operates a fleet of over 230 mostly passenger planes. This marks the airline's first major order with Boeing in more than a decade. Advertisement Boeing stated the deal brings its 777-9 order book to 35 aircraft. The 777-9 is described as the world's largest twin-engine airplane. Boeing highlighted the aircraft's fuel efficiency and lower emissions. Hong Kong's aviation sector faced severe challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic. Strict travel restrictions kept the city isolated until late 2022. Cathay reported a slight profit increase to US$1.27 billion in 2024. The airline confirmed flights had returned to pre-pandemic levels earlier this year. First-half 2025 attributable profit rose to HK$3.65 billion (US$4.65 million). Total revenue grew 9.5 percent to US$6.92 billion in the same period. Cathay declared an interim dividend of HK$20 cents per share. Chairman Patrick Healy praised the company's solid financial performance. He cited higher passenger volumes and lower fuel costs as key drivers. Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Express have added 19 new destinations in 2025. The airlines now serve over 100 passenger destinations globally. Direct flights to Brussels recently resumed after a pandemic-induced hiatus. However, profit margins dipped by 0.6 percent in the first half of 2025. Healy noted short-term challenges for budget carrier HK Express. Bookings have not yet returned to normal levels, he said. Cathay's share price dropped nine percent following the earnings announcement. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
