Temple or cultural centre? BJP questions Bengal's Jagannath Dham project

India Today27-04-2025

The West Bengal BJP on Sunday posed a series of questions to the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government over the construction of a Puri-like Jagannath temple, reigniting a political controversy ahead of its inauguration.Leader of the Opposition in Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, wrote an open letter to West Bengal Chief Secretary HK Dwivedi, seeking clarification on whether a Jagannath temple or a cultural centre was being built at Digha. He pointed out that the invitation card for the opening ceremony lacked clarity and stated that he would attend the event only if his concerns were addressed.Adhikari raised concerns about whether a 'Jagannath Dham Sanskriti Kendra' was being constructed at Digha, as indicated in the invitation. Referring to his invitation to the 'Prana Pratishtha' ceremony, he questioned whether the event was for a cultural centre or a temple. He demanded that the invitation card be reissued with "clear and accurate information".advertisement"The tender documents of West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation reveal that 'Jagannath Dham Sanskriti Kendra' has been built at Digha? You are inviting me to attend the 'Prana Pratistha' Ceremony. Will you clarify whether 'Jagannath Dham Sanskriti Kendra' (cultural centre) is being inaugurated or Jagannath Temple is being inaugurated? You must reprint the Invitation Card with proper clarity. You can also send me a reply clarifying whether HIDCO has built a Temple or a Cultural Centre," he wrote.Additionally, the BJP leader questioned whether the maintenance, management and upkeep of the 'Jagannath Dham Sanskriti Kendra' or Jagannath Temple will be handled by West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (WBHIDCO). Adhikari is the Vice Chairperson of the board.
He also sought clarification on the identity of the chairperson of WBHIDCO, as the website lists 'Janab Firhad Hakim', Urban Development Minister, in the role. If that is indeed the case, he questioned why Hakim's name was not printed on the invitation.advertisementAdhikari further enquired about Hakim's involvement with the structure under construction, pointing to media rumours suggesting that he had been removed from his position as chairperson without ceremony. If this were true, he asked, 'Why is Firhad Hakim's name still listed as the HIDCO Chairman?'A series of questions were raised regarding the donations, specifically whether they would be considered "temple property" or treated as part of the corporation's revenue. Adhikari also enquired about the staff appointments, asking about the qualifications required to become a staff member and whether non-Hindus would be considered for positions. In an attempt to ignite a religious debate, he posed his final question, stating that if Digha's Jagannath Dham was modelled after the Puri Jagannath Dham, then, according to the latter's rules, the entry of non-Hindus would be prohibited.Concluding his statement, he asked, 'Since the WB Government or HIDCO (a Public Sector Undertaking) controls the site, can it discriminate when appointing individuals based on religion?'In December last year, Adhikari had questioned the construction, saying the Jagannath Temple in Puri was one of the Char Dhams and "replicating" it was unacceptable. He argued that public funds should not be used for constructing religious sites.

India has adequate energy supplies for coming months: Oil Minister Puri amid Israel-Iran escalation

The Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri on Friday said that India has adequate energy supplies for the coming months amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. "We have adequate energy supplies for the coming months," said Puri in a post on X. The statement comes after he held a periodic review with Petroleum Ministry Secretary and CMDs of India's energy PSUs. "India's energy strategy is shaped by successfully navigating the trilemma of energy availability, affordability and sustainability under the dynamic leadership of PM Sh @narendramodi Ji," said Puri. Crude prices soared more than 13 percent at one point Friday following the overnight attacks -- reaching the highest levels since January. They later pulled back but were still up by around eight percent around 1300 GMT, with international benchmark Brent North Sea crude at nearly $75 per barrel. Live Events

"Nuclear arsenal was ready; clandestine network was assembling them," Israeli envoy Reuven Azar underlines reason for Iran attack

Israel on Friday launched pre-emptive strikes on Iran under Operation Rising Lion . The action was taken to negate Iran's attempts at assembling a nuclear weapon. Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar highlighted Iran's "illicit military nuclear program," and accused them of accumulating enriched uranium ." In an exclusive Interview with ANI, Azar said, "In the last few months, they have sped up the pace of enriched uranium, and now they have enriched uranium for nine nuclear bombs. But what triggered this in the more immediate context is the fact that there was a clandestine group that had been working on actually assembling the nuclear weapon on a ballistic missile. So that would create a situation in which Israel could be attacked by nuclear ballistic missiles , thousands of them." The envoy said that the International Atomic Energy Agency ( IAEA ) has determined that Iran has breached the safeguards agreement and has been conducting illicit and undeclared nuclear activity. "And we are a state just half the size of Haryana or the size of Mizoram. For us, this is something that we cannot bear. We have also seen that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has determined that Iran has breached the safeguards agreement and has been conducting illicit and undeclared nuclear activity outside of the scope of what they have been agreeing to abide by under the umbrella of the Non-Proliferation Treaty," he said. Azar said that while Israel has no issue with Iran having nuclear power plants for electricity generation, the country cannot be allowed to enrich uranium itself. Live Events "Well, we haven't at any time mentioned that Iran cannot have nuclear power plants for electricity. What we didn't want was for Iran to possess the ability to enrich uranium by itself, because that would be an element in the composition of a nuclear arsenal. You have to understand. You need three components to launch a nuclear attack. You need the missile, which is the vehicle. You need the fissile material, that is the stuff that you need to put in a bomb. And you need a nuclear warhead. So if they have developed the plans, and we have already exposed that with the nuclear information that we have seized. About pairing the warhead with the missile. That since 2003. Iran has been conducting activities to create a nuclear warhead. So if they already have the ballistic missiles and they have the fissile material and they are capable of producing fissile material, then they would have the potential to create a huge nuclear arsenal. And therefore, that fissile material has to be removed from Iran. And the only material that can be used is that which is being imported to create electricity. We haven't said that that's not possible," he said. He also underscored that Israel's military response had come after prolonged restraint. "I think that Israel has been acting very responsibly because we've been postponing this military action for a very long time. Iran has been given many, many chances to retract from this policy. They have been sanctioned, they've been negotiating with, we have seen many, many attempts by different countries in the world to try to divert Iran from this line of action. And the fact that we have reached this point is because it's an imminent moment that we couldn't continue living with. And therefore, we took action. I think people appreciate the degree of our restraint. And I can tell you that many countries in the Arab world feel as threatened by Israel as Israel, if not more, because, you know, what the Iranians are doing is very clear for many countries. Iran wants to take Jerusalem, but it's only a stop on the way to Mecca and Medina. This is what they want to do. They want to control the Islamic world. And they have been attacking other countries in the past. Look what happened more than four years ago in Saudi Arabia when they directly attacked the oil production of Saudi Arabia. So I think that Israel is supported. And people, even if they don't support, they understand why we are taking this action," Azar added. Meanwhile, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed that the Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, the Commander of the IRGC, and the Commander of Iran's Emergency Command were all eliminated in Israeli strikes across Iran carried out by more than 200 fighter jets.

DMK not soft towards AINRC-BJP government in Puducherry, says Opposition leader

Opposition leader and Puducherry DMK convenor R. Siva on Friday denied charges of his party being soft towards the ruling AINRC-BJP government in Puducherry. Addressing a press conference at the Legislative Assembly, he said the party had been in the forefront of organising protests on issues related to power privatisation, New Education Policy, and other anti-people policies of the AINRC-BJP government. 'We have several trump cards against the ruling establishment to remove them from power in the upcoming Assembly elections. We will make it public in the coming days. To begin with, we would be organising a protest in front of the Civil Supplies department next week demanding re-tender for procurement of rice meant for free distribution through ration shops. The government should ensure transparency in procurement and distribution of free rice,' Mr. Siva said. Several misdeeds of the AINRC-BJP government would be made public at the appropriate time, he said adding that the DMK had opposed the anti-people policies of the government. Asked whether the DMK would lead the Opposition alliance in Puducherry, he said electoral strategies were decided by the party leadership in Tamil Nadu. The Puducherry DMK unit would follow the instructions given by the party leadership, he added.
