City of Greenville making it easier to redevelop downtown
GREENVILLE S.C. (WSPA) – The City of Greenville is making downtown more accessible for everyone by adding a new ADA compliant ramp behind the new Spinx Market, providing safe, easy access from the city parking lot directly to Main Street.
Greenville City officials said with sky high construction costs, they help private investors, such as the Spinx company, where they can.
The man in charge of the city's economic development, Sam Konduros, explained how going shoulder-to-shoulder on projects with private partners is what has helped Greenville thrive.
'When we think it's a great project and we can contribute in a way that's really investing in our citizens, investing in our city and again hitting numerous goals that we have to enable a project to move forward, it really makes a lot of sense,' said Konduros.
The city's funds compliment the company's $3.5 million redevelopment of the former Cooks Station building.
'It's when a developer or owner presents a great opportunity to the city but needs us to have some level of participation to make it financially feasible,' Konduros explained.
He said that the city pays close attention to public access areas, especially around new developments.
'It's an enhancement of our own infrastructure and again making the city more attractive,' he said. 'It's often the difference in a project going forward or not going forward in our ability to work with them like that.'
He said this project helps everyone enjoy downtown.
'Spinx created an opportunity,' Konduros said. 'Whether people choose to go inside the Spinx retail location or not to, this allows them to better access Main Street, in a wheelchair or not, 24 hours a day.'
He said these are long standing partnerships. He told us Spinx has signed a 35-year lease on South Main Street.

BMW Charity Pro-Am raises over $16 million for S.C. charities
GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) — At the BMW Charity Pro-Am golf tournament, their mission is all about giving back to local charities. For 25 years, the BMW Charity Pro-Am has been in 'full swing,' bringing a fun tournament to the Upstate while raising money for charities across the state. 'Oh, they love it,' Jeff Morris, Executive Director of Folds of Honor for the Palmetto State also said. 'They are calling me as soon as we are finished,' Chrystal Assadzandi, Charity and Volunteer Coordinator for the BMW Charity Pro-Am, said. 'I get a lot of calls saying 'how can we participate? How can we be a part?'' In 2001, the tournament was created to showcase the beauty of the South Carolina Upstate, while bringing locals, celebrities, and professional golfers together. It's aimed to raise money and awareness for South Carolina charities. One of those charities that has been impacted is Folds of Honor. 'I have had many veterans come up to me and they are so grateful to have the opportunity to come watch a golf tournament, come into the hospitality suite, interact with other veterans,' Morris said. 'It is amazing when you hear them, and they just go in there and they swap stories.' Morris said since Folds of Honor's involvement with the BMW Charity Pro-Am began in 2018, their group has been awarded around $250,000. The charity offers educational scholarships to the children and spouses of military and first responders. Funding for Folds of Honor, along with the more than 50 charities involved in this year's tournament, is raised in many ways, including through donations, ticket sales, and volunteer programs. BMW leaders said hundreds of charities have been impacted through this tournament over the past 25 years, and the money raised for them has not slowed down. 'We have given back in the past 25 years over $16 million to charities right here in the Upstate,' Assadzandi said. The BMW Charity Pro-Am will run through Sunday, June 8. Columbus Government issues public meeting notice for major upcoming roadway projects
COLUMBUS, Ga. () — The Columbus Consolidated Government has issued a public meeting notice to provide details and gather feedback on two major infrastructure projects. The meeting will be on Monday, June 9 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Annex Building located at 420 10th Street. Street Rehabilitation – Broadway from 4th to 5th StreetThe project consists of upgrading the sanitary sewer and stormwater collection system. Other local utility systems will be able to upgrade their systems at this time. The existing brick pavers will be removed and replaced as part of this project. Driveways and sidewalks will be reconnected during this project. 8th Street Improvements from Front Avenue to Veterans ParkwayThe purpose of this project is to implement traffic calming measures to make 8th Street more pedestrian friendly. The proposed improvements include raised crosswalks in all four directions at the intersection of 8th Street and 1st Avenue and the intersection of 8th Street and 3rd Avenue. A mini roundabout is proposed at the intersection of 8th Street and 2nd Avenue. Additionally, ADA accessible curb cuts (aka wheelchair ramps) will be installed or modified throughout the project limits, and sidewalk connectivity to bus stops will be added. All work will take place within existing right of way limits, and traffic calming measures will take place within the existing curb lines. Proposed construction materials (i.e. colored concrete, pavers, etc.) will be installed to resemble the colors and patterns of existing materials in the Columbus Historic District.
