Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP John Brittas has written to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and the Railway Board, requesting them to reject the Southern Railway 's move to surrender funds allocated for projects in Kerala in the 2025-26 budget.In separate letters addressed to Vaishnaw and the Railway Board chairman, Brittas has expressed strong objection to a proposal submitted by the Southern Railway through a letter dated May 14 to surrender a substantial portion of the funds allocated in the budget for the Financial Year 2025-26 for the Angamali-Sabarimala and Tirunavaya-Guruvayur railway lines.He has urged for immediate intervention to discard the Southern Railway's recommendation and ensure continued financial support for these crucial projects in the southern state."These projects, envisaged decades ago, remain unfinished due to persistent institutional apathy, despite their strategic, economic, and socio-cultural significance," Brittas said in his letter addressed to Vaishnaw.He termed the move a blatant continuation of the long-standing neglect of Kerala's railway infrastructure and emphasised that the Angamali-Sabarimala line is of national significance given the magnitude of the Sabarimala pilgrimage , while the Tirunavaya-Guruvayur line is vital for improving connectivity in northern Kerala.He pointed out that the Southern Railway has also proposed surrendering funds for projects in Tamil Nadu, revealing a broader pattern of bureaucratic disregard for long-standing railway demands in south India."The decision to surrender funds, ironically justified by citing a 'frozen' status, amounts to a perpetuation of neglect rather than an attempt at rectification. It is pertinent to note that the very status of these projects as 'frozen' is symptomatic of the broader pattern of railway discrimination against Kerala, where critical demands are either delayed or denied," the Left leader said.He requested the minister to issue directions to the board to reject the Southern Railway's recommendations in this regard and instruct the authorities concerned to ensure the continuation, acceleration and proper funding of these long-pending projects."Kerala cannot be expected to wait indefinitely for basic rail infrastructure," he said.

Maoists allege killing of innocent tribals in Bastar; police calls it ‘baseless'
The proscribed Communist Party of India (Maoist) or CPI (Maoist) Darbha Division Committee has accused security forces of killing innocent tribals during recent anti-Maoist operations in Bastar region and demanded strict punishment for responsible officers. The Maoists alleged that members of the central and state governments had carried out 'massacres, looting, and atrocities'. (Representative file photo) In a statement, dated August 10, the Maoists alleged that members of the central and state governments had carried out 'massacres, looting, and atrocities' in Bijapur, Sukma, Dantewada, and other parts of Bastar. The Maoists claimed that on July 29, 2025, a tribal woman named Muchako Ganga was killed in Bijapur's Kader villages by police personnel, describing it as a deliberate murder. 'In Sukma district, 12 innocent tribals were killed in fake encounters and arrests, while 3 people remain in police custody and are being tortured. Across many areas, innocent people have been killed, bringing only pain and suffering to Bastar', the Maoists claimed. From the same village, 17–18 tribal youths were arrested and sent to jail (Bijapur and Dantewada),' the statement reads. The Maoists cited past incidents from 2024 and earlier this year, claiming that dozens of villagers, including women and children, have either been killed or seriously injured during security operations. The Maoists demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all 'innocent tribals' arrested during anti-Maoist drives, and called for a judicial inquiry into the killing of Muchako Ganga. Reacting to the allegations, inspector general of police (IGP) (Bastar Range) Sundarraj P said, 'The ongoing, relentless anti-Naxal operations conducted by the security forces in the Bastar region have dealt a severe blow to the CPI (Maoist) outfit. Continuous pressure, intensified area domination, and precise intelligence-based actions have significantly eroded their organisational strength and influence over the local populace. The Maoist outfit today stands weakened and is facing a deep leadership crisis, declining cadre morale, and shrinking support base.' 'In recent days, the Maoist outfit has resorted to issuing fabricated, misleading, and baseless statements regarding the operational outcomes of security forces. These false narratives are being circulated with the sole intention of sowing doubt, creating confusion, and questioning the credibility of our forces in the eyes of the public,' said the IG. The Bastar Police, along with Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), stand firmly committed to transparency, professionalism, and adherence to the law in all operations, he said. 'We categorically reject such malicious propaganda by Maoists. Right now Maoists have only one choice — to shun violence and join the social mainstream. Otherwise, they must be ready to face serious consequences,' the IG claimed.

Police allow CPI (M) to hold ‘peaceful assembly' at Azad Maidan over ‘Gaza genocide'
MUMBAI: The Mumbai police have allowed the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI (M)) to hold a peaceful assembly at Azad Maidan on August 20 to condemn the ongoing 'genocide in Gaza', the Bombay high court was informed on Tuesday. In the second petition filed on August 4, advocate Rishika Agarwal requested to quash the courts earlier orders and allow the party to hold a peaceful protest at a designated area concerning the Israel-Palestine war. Senior advocate Mihir Desai, representing the CPI(M) said the party wanted to hold the peaceful assembly on August 20 between 3pm and 6 pm. He assured the court that the party will abide by the Draft Regulations of Public Meetings, Agitations and Processions Rules, 2025, under the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951. The rule earmarks Azad Maidan to be the designated area for conducting any assembly, protest, strikes, etc., in a regulated manner. The act also includes some prohibitions and responsibilities during such meetings. Provocative speeches are not allowed, and the gathering must adhere to law and order and must be conducted in coordination with the police. It further encloses certain prohibitions and responsibilities during the conduct such meetings, such as, non-usage of provocative speeches, coordination with the public authority, maintaining law and order, etc. According to the first petition, some members of the CPI (M), under the banner of the All India Peace and Solidarity Organisation (AIPSO), had approached the Azad Maidan police station on June 13 to seek permission for the protest. They highlighted that the protest was being organised by representatives of various political parties and civil society organisations. The police denied their request, stating that the protest was regarding an international issue, and various political, social, and religious organisations had raised objections to it, raising concerns of an adverse law and order situation. On June 18, police personnel also visited the homes of certain CPI (M) members who were organising the protests and detained them, the petition said. They were physically prevented from entering Azad Maidan, and around 30 people were detained at the Yellow Gate police station, it added. The petition stated that while the legal proceedings of the matter were awaiting a conclusion, the police, on July 15, had yet again denied the party the approval for the protest. Further, on July 25, the division bench of justices Ravindra Ghuge and Gautam Ankhad had dismissed the petition, asking the political party to focus on issues in its own country. The latest Israel-Gaza war, which began on October 7, 2023, has resulted in the deaths of over 61,800 people, including approximately 59,866 Palestinians and 1,983 Israelis, according to the Gaza Health Ministry and the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
