ANOTHER bank to offer Smart ID and passport services in SA
As reported by BusinessTech , Capitec Bank has confirmed plans to introduce Smart ID and passport services at select branches starting later this year.
The rollout will begin with 10 branches and expand to 100 by early 2026.
The announcement follows Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber's confirmation that both Capitec and FNB have joined the Department of Home Affairs' (DHA) digital transformation initiative.
Initially, the service will only be available in-branch, but Capitec says customers can expect app-based applications and home delivery options in the future.
The bank also plans to prioritise locations currently underserved by the DHA and other banks.
At present, most Smart ID services offered through partner banks are concentrated in major urban centres. Capitec's expansion aims to reach communities outside these hubs as more branches come online.
From October this year, select Capitec branches will follow this process: Photo capture – If the DHA does not have a suitable ID photo on record, customers can use a dedicated Smart ID terminal at participating branches. Biometric verification – Customers enter their ID number, have their photo taken, and the system verifies their identity against the DHA database in real time. Collection – Smart IDs will be ready for collection at the same branch within a few weeks.
Future updates will include passport renewal services, app-based applications, and home delivery options. Capitec says further details on this will be released in the coming days.

PSA proposes steps for government to take to tackle unemployment crisis
South Africa's rising unemployment is a crisis that demands co-ordinated, bold and inclusive action. The Public Servants' Association (PSA) made this comment after the latest unemployment figures released by Stats SA this week showed a rise in the official unemployment rate to 33.2% in the second quarter of 2025, up from 32.9% in the previous quarter. This marked the third consecutive quarterly increase and brought the total number of unemployed South Africans to 8.4-million. 'This situation underscores the persistent structural challenges facing the country's labour market,' the PSA said. It said while employment gains were recorded in sectors such as construction, mining and private households, these were overshadowed by significant job losses in finance, agriculture, community and social services, and transport. 'The PSA is particularly alarmed by the decline in employment in the financial services sector, traditionally a key driver of economic growth and job creation.' The union noted the disturbing statistics regarding youth unemployment and the 'not in employment, education or training (NEET)' rate, which remained above 43% for people aged 15-34. 'This reflects a growing disengagement of young people from the labour market and education system, posing long-term risks to social stability and economic development.' The union urged the government to accelerate labour-intensive public infrastructure projects to absorb unemployed youth and low-skilled workers. Support was also required for small and medium enterprises through targeted funding and regulatory reform to stimulate job creation. 'It is critical to strengthen vocational training and skills development programmes, particularly in rural and underserved communities.' There was also a need to ensure transparency and accountability in the implementation of employment stimulus packages. 'The PSA calls on Stats SA to expedite its planned revisions to the labour force survey methodology to better capture informal-sector employment. This may provide a more accurate picture of economic activity and inform more effective policy responses.'

South African retail sales rise, but caution dampens expectations
Statistics South Africa data shows retailers in textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods led the gains in second quarter retail sales. Retail trade sales saw growth of 1.6% year-on-year in June, a figure that is far outpacing economic growth of 0.1% as of the first quarter yet is below expectations. The disappointing number has been attributed to the fact that, while South Africans continued to spend on clothing and home improvement items, their caution in the face of economic uncertainty kept overall momentum in check. Statistics South Africa data shows retailers in textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods led the gains at constant 2019 prices, which strips out inflationary effects. This was followed by hardware, paint and glass stores. However, general dealers – the largest segment of the market – weighed on the headline number, as did food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores. On a quarter-on-quarter, seasonally adjusted basis – the method used in gross domestic product calculations – retail sales recorded a more modest rise in the second quarter, suggesting the sector will still likely make a positive contribution to overall economic growth for the period, said Investec economist Lara Hodes.

The party has called on all beneficiaries of Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) to defend the gains made under democracy. This comes after the DA announced a set of reform proposals aimed at empowering state-owned entities (SOEs), which it claims offer a better alternative to B-BBEE, employment equity, and the Expropriation Act, policies the party insists must be scrapped. Speaking at a media briefing in Johannesburg, DA leader John Steenhuisen said the three laws are major obstacles to economic growth. 'BBBEE and racial quotas have failed, and together with expropriation without compensation, create an environment that deters investment, growth and job creation for the majority of South Africans,' he said. Steenhuisen added that the DA is not against transformation, but argued that current empowerment policies have failed ordinary South Africans. 'These policies are simply not fair. They don't help the millions of South Africans who just need the government to get out of the way. These policies must go,' he said. He called for the replacement of B-BBEE and employment equity with measures based on need and merit. In response, the ANC said that transformation policies must be continuously evaluated and discussed by all South Africans to ensure they remain aligned with the goals of democracy, social justice, and equality, as outlined in the Constitution. 'The ANC recognises that these conversations and debates must be held among all South Africans, particularly to address concerns that such policies may be unintentionally creating a new form of elitism,' said ANC spokesperson Mhlengi Bhengu-Motsiri. 'To effectively tackle any unintended consequences, the ANC believes that the discussion must be guided by scientific findings.' The ANC said it supports the BEE Commission's call for focused evaluation studies to assess the impact of B-BBEE, stating that such research will help ensure the policy achieves its intended purpose of building a more equitable society. The party highlighted the recent findings of the 2023–2024 Analysis of Major B-BBEE Transactions report, which it says confirms that B-BBEE is delivering measurable benefits to ordinary South Africans. According to the ANC, companies invested R7.2 billion in enterprise development, enabling thousands of black-owned and managed small businesses and cooperatives to grow. Supplier development reached R40.7 billion, while R64 billion was spent on skills development, with a focus on young people, women, and rural learners. Bhengu-Motsiri said B-BBEE is rooted in the democratic framework and is designed to benefit 'black South Africans, that is Africans, Coloureds and Indians, and further extends benefits to white women, who were also historically marginalised in economic participation.' 'These empowerment measures have opened pathways for millions of South Africans into business ownership, corporate leadership, and skilled employment,' she said. 'We call on all South Africans who have benefitted from these measures, including those appointed to various positions in the private sector, to stand in defence of their own gains and reject any political agenda aimed at reversing the progress made.' As the leader of society, the ANC added that it will continue to evaluate all transformation policies to ensure they serve their intended purpose. 'Where these policies are found not to benefit those who were previously oppressed and marginalised, they will be reviewed and strengthened,' the party said.
