NEW AFFORDABLE RENTAL HOMES COMING TO GIBSONS Français
The announcement was made by Patrick Weiler, Member of Parliament for West Vancouver–Sunshine Coast–Sea to Sky Country, on behalf of the Honourable Gregor Roberston, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada.
The second project will bring 33 new rental homes for people with moderate to middle incomes in Gibsons. The four-storey building is a partnership between the Government of Canada, through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), the Province of BC, through the BC Builds program administered by BC Housing, the Town of Gibsons and the Sunshine Coast Affordable Housing Society (SCAHS). The homes include a mix of bachelor, one-, two-, and three-bedroom units, with seven units completely accessible and all common areas are barrier free. The SCAHS will own and operate all the homes for both projects.
O'Shea Place will include a childcare centre with 25 childcare spaces for 30 months to school age and 18 before and after school spaces. The centre is made possible through almost $2.9 million through ChildCareBC's New Spaces Fund, which is jointly supported through federal and provincial investments under the 2021-22 to 2025-26 Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement.
Construction is expected to be complete in mid 2026.
Construction on the first project Shaw Place is complete with 40 homes open for families, seniors and individuals. It opened in 2024 and funding was announced in November 2022.

The National Housing Strategy (NHS) is a 10+ year, $115+ billion plan to give more Canadians a place to call home. Progress on programs and initiatives are updated quarterly on the Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada (HICC) website. As of March 2025, the federal government has committed $65.84 billion to support the creation of over 166,000 units and the repair of over 322,000 units. The Affordable Housing Fund (AHF) provides funding through low-interest and/or forgivable loans or contributions to partnered organizations for new affordable housing and the renovation and repair of existing, affordable and community housing. This is a $14.6 billion program under the National Housing Strategy (NHS) that gives priority to projects that help people who need it most, including women and children fleeing family violence, seniors, Indigenous Peoples, people living with disabilities, those with mental health or addiction issues, Veterans, and young adults.
As of March 2025, the Government of Canada has committed $11.99 billion to support the creation of over 46,000 units and the repair of over 174,000 units through the Affordable Housing Fund.
Funding provided for 915 O'Shea Road is as follows:
$9.6 million from the federal government, through the National Housing Strategy's Affordable Housing Fund
$4.2 million BC Builds grant provided by the Province through BC Housing
The Town of Gibsons is also providing the land, valued at approximately $3 million

Under Trump, almost 80% of Canadians disapprove of the U.S., data shows
Amid ongoing economic tensions between Canada and the United States, a survey released Thursday shows patience is wearing thin among Canadians, with almost 80 per cent disapproving of the current leadership in that country. The survey, conducted by Gallup in May and June of 2025, shows Canadians have a 15 per cent approval rating for the U.S. leadership — the lowest U.S. President Donald Trump has received, and down from 17 per cent in 2020 and 16 per cent in 2018 during his first term. The Gallup World Poll, which started in 2005, measures the attitudes, behaviour and well-being of people across more than 140 countries. Of the five major global powers in the study, Canadians' disapproval rating of the U.S. (79 per cent) fell roughly in line with that of Russia (82 per cent) and was worse than that of China (64 per cent). With strike looming, jobs minister asks union to respond to Air Canada's arbitration request
With Air Canada expected to address its negotiations with its flight attendant union this morning, the federal jobs minister says she has asked the Canada Union of Public Employees to respond to the airline's request for binding arbitration. I have met with both parties throughout the bargaining process and strongly urged them to come to an agreement, Minister Patty Hajdu wrote on X. Air Canada submitted a request that I make a referral under Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code to send the parties to binding arbitration. I have asked the union to respond to the employer's request. Earlier this week, Air Canada sent a proposal to CUPE that the parties use binding interest arbitration to come to an agreement as they negotiate the renewal of a 10-year collective agreement for more than 10,000 flight attendants. CUPE declined to use arbitration, a process in which an outside arbitrator would hear proposals from each side about specific agenda items that haven't been agreed upon and then make a decision that would bind both parties. Air Canada said earlier this week that it would start cancelling flights on Thursday to mitigate the impact of a potential strike that could start on Saturday just before 1 a.m. ET. Canadian travellers have been anxiously waiting for news of cancelled flights. But as of 10 a.m. ET, both Air Canada's daily outlook and the flight tracking website FlightAware didn't show mass cancellations. Government of Canada launches Cyber Security Cooperation Program 2025 Français
OTTAWA, ONT, Aug. 14, 2025 /CNW/ - Today, the Honourable Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Public Safety, announced a new call for proposals under the 2025 Cyber Security Cooperation Program (CSCP), to strengthen the country's cyber resilience and address evolving cyber threats. Originally launched in 2019, the CSCP provided funding to projects that improved the security of Canada's vital cyber systems. CSCP 2025 will build on the success of its last call for proposals to provide up to $10.3 million over five years to support initiatives that promote cyber security innovation, knowledge sharing, and capacity building. The CSCP is a key component of Canada's new National Cyber Security Strategy. The new call for proposals will help support the Strategy's goals by funding grassroots and institutional efforts for a secure and resilient Canadian cyberspace.
