Delhi mega cleanliness drive: Over 3,500 km of MCD roads cleaned, encroachments removed
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Friday released its zone-wise progress report on the 20-day mega cleanliness drive which was launched by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on May 1.
All 12 zones of the corporation were covered under the drive that comprised cleaning, encroachment removal, and issuing of challans.
As part of the drive, the MCD has cleaned over 3,500 kilometers of roads — the highest amount of cleaning was done in the Rohini Zone, followed by Najafgarh, Karol Bagh, and South Zone, Gupta said in a statement.
'The 'Swachh Delhi' initiative by the Delhi government is receiving tremendous support from the citizens of the capital. The latest figures released by the MCD shows that this comprehensive cleanliness campaign is delivering remarkable results on the ground,' Gupta had said in a statement.
A total of 11,131 challans were issued against encroachments, with West Zone recording the highest number of 2,994 challans. Additionally, 5,932 illegal materials were seized, and 186.5 kilometers of roads were cleared of encroachments.
Gupta said that to address water-logging issues during monsoon, comprehensive cleaning of the MCD drains was carried out — 19,892.38 metric tonnes of silt has been removed so far.
As of May 21, the Irrigation and Flood Control Department removed 13,72,276 metric tonnes of silt from 27 drains in Delhi, with instructions to complete the removal of the remaining silt by May 31.
Gupta shared that several stray animals have been transferred to various gaushalas and stray dogs vaccinated against rabies, while unauthorised dairies were sealed in Najafgarh and Keshav Puram.
The CM shared that, on an average, 33,809 sanitation workers and other related personnel participated actively in the campaign daily.
The government has also identified 4,139 dark spots and rectified them, repaired 4,140 streetlights and installed 285 new lamps to ensure proper lighting.
Additionally, 283 Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) were engaged through interactive meetings aimed at empowering citizens' participation in cleanliness.
In busy commercial areas, a night-time cleanliness drive was conducted in 418 major markets and removed 37,628 illegal posters, 8,399 banners and 3,917 hoardings from public walls, poles, and hoardings. Besides, 30 walls have been beautified with cleanliness based artwork and cultural themes.
Efforts such as grass cutting, removal of unauthorized encroachments, elimination of illegal posters, and repair of damaged roads, management of construction and demolition (C&D) waste were amongst the tasks carried out in a similar cleanliness drive that was carried out in all 14 circles of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC).

Delhi govt believes in working for people: CM Gupta
She said that in the last 100 days, her government has not just made promises but delivered results on the ground. Gupta was addressing a public meeting under the '100 Days of Trust' campaign in west Delhi's Janakpuri. The event also marked the 11 years of the Modi government at the Centre. New Delhi, Jun 8 (PTI) Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday said her government only believes in working for people and not in publicising their achievements. The chief minister said that this is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'sankalp se siddhi', and the government is wholeheartedly working with the same spirit to serve the people. She made an appeal to the public to continue supporting their elected representatives, emphasising that now the central, state, and municipal governments are working together in Delhi. 'The days of passing blame — 'this is not my responsibility' — are gone. Now, the work is everyone's responsibility,' she said, taking a dig at previous governments. She alleged that the previous government 'spent more on publicity and doing little on the ground'. Gupta said her government is a government of work, not of names, and it believes in service, not showmanship. Listing out her government's achievements in the past 100 days, she said they have installed 1,000 water sprinklers to control pollution and removed 20 lakh metric tonnes of sludge from drains flowing into the Yamuna. Dismissing the odd-even scheme as 'publicity stunt', she emphasised that real, long-term solutions are now being implemented. She announced that anti-smog guns have been installed on the rooftops of all high-rise buildings in Delhi, and claimed that cloud seeding (artificial rainfall) will soon begin for the first time in the capital. The previous AAP regime had alleged that the Centre was not cooperative on the cloud seeding proposal. Gupta stressed that instead of announcing flashy mega-projects, her government has prioritised basic amenities such as drains, sewage, pothole-free roads, and drinking water, because these are the real needs of the people. For slum redevelopment, a separate budget of Rs 700 crore has been allocated for infrastructure such as drains, toilets, bathing areas, and paving works. She assured residents that until they are given permanent housing, no slum will be removed and all basic amenities will be made available where they currently reside. The chief minister said the present government follows the mantra of 'seva (service), not mewa (rewards).' Calling minister and Janakpuri MLA Ashish Sood a dedicated public servant, she said, 'We must bring Janakpuri to the top among Delhi's 70 assembly constituencies.' She said under her team's hard work and PM Modi's leadership, Delhi will transform, grow, and take a leading role in the nation's development. 'This is not a government of ministers or chief minister, it is a government of the people of Delhi, and every decision we make reflects that commitment,' Gupta said. Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Bittu Cautions Ludhiana West Voters Not to Waste Their Votes on Congress, AAP.
Ludhiana: Central ministerial council member Ravneet Singh Bittu on Saturday alleged while campaigning for BJP's Jiwan Gupta in Ludhiana West that industrialists' backing AAP and violating the byelection's model code of conduct by funding party events hinted at a quid pro quo relationship between them and the state govt. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Urging voters to reject the Congress as well as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), while throwing his full weight behind Gupta, Bittu argued that a victory for the AAP would just be its supremo's ticket to the Rajya Sabha, a personal ambition not worthy of public's mandate. He also alleged a misuse of public funds during chief minister Bhagwant Mann's Ludhiana visit, since he had "stayed at a five-star hotel while campaigning for AAP's candidate". Speaking during a press conference at Shehanshah Palace on Ferozepur Road, Bittu, Union minister of state for railways and food-processing industries, warned the assembly seat's voters against backing "internally fractured" opposition parties. He argued that supporting Congress or AAP would only fuel instability and derail local development. "A vote for AAP or Congress is a vote wasted," Bittu said, urging residents to consider Gupta as the only candidate capable of delivering sustained growth in Ludhiana West. Bittu accused both major rival parties of internal chaos. He said the Congress was riddled with factional infighting, citing tensions between Punjab Congress president, Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, and supporters of party's local candidate, Bharat Bhushan Ashu. "Anyone supporting Ashu is punished by Warring — and vice versa," Bittu, who used to be Ludhiana's Lok Sabha member from the Congress before joining the BJP, claimed. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Turning his fire on AAP, Bittu said its Ludhiana candidate, Sanjeev Arora, lacked full support from his own party's MLAs. He referred to chief minister Bhagwant Mann's public admission that Arora was not assured a cabinet position — even if he won. Drawing a parallel to AAP member Mohinder Bhagat's sidelining in Jalandhar, Bittu alleged that AAP's focus was not governance, but simply "sending Arvind Kejriwal to the Rajya Sabha". Highlighting BJP's track record, Bittu pointed to high-profile infrastructure projects under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including the Chenab river bridge in Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory and the Statue of Unity, which he claimed now drew more tourists than the Statue of Liberty. He accused both Congress and AAP of lacking patriotic commitment, recalling their past criticism of military operations such as the Balakot airstrikes and the recent Operation Sindoor. "They question our forces instead of standing behind them," he said. "Development cannot thrive under parties riddled with conflict or driven by self-interest," Bittu said, and concluded: "Only the BJP has the vision and unity to move Ludhiana forward." box Demands Probe Into 'Smart City Graft' Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu has called for an independent investigation into alleged corruption within Ludhiana's municipal corporation, raising concerns over the integrity of officials linked to the city's high-profile Smart City projects. Speaking at a public event, Bittu criticised the Punjab govt's claims of fighting corruption, citing a recent case involving superintending engineer Sanjay Kanwar. The officer is accused of demanding a 10% commission from a contractor in exchange for awarding a beautification project at the city's Rose Garden. "This is the same officer who handled key Smart City Mission projects. What's the guarantee he didn't engage in similar practices earlier?" Bittu said. He further alleged that Kanwar had named a senior municipal officer as part of the commission demand, yet no action has been taken against the higher official. Bittu urged authorities to investigate whether any political leaders from the ruling party were also complicit in the scheme. "This is not an isolated incident," he added. "The silence over the involvement of senior officials raises serious questions. The public deserves to know whether this was part of a larger pattern of corruption under the guise of development. " The case has added pressure on the state government to demonstrate its commitment to transparency as Punjab continues to push forward with Smart City infrastructure initiatives. Centre Approves Rs 24,000 Crore Projects For Delhi, Rs 3,500 Crore Tunnel Project Included
Last Updated: Among the key initiatives is a 5-km underground tunnel connecting Shiv Murti-Mahipalpur on the Dwarka Expressway to Nelson Mandela Road in Vasant Kunj. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday announced that the central government cleared infrastructure projects worth Rs 24,000 crore aimed at easing traffic congestion and curbing pollution in the capital and its adjoining areas. Among the key initiatives is a 5-km underground tunnel connecting Shiv Murti-Mahipalpur on the Dwarka Expressway to Nelson Mandela Road in Vasant Kunj. The project, to be executed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), is estimated to cost Rs 3,500 crore. Gupta said the tunnel plan was finalised during a recent meeting with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, and construction is expected to begin early next year. The tunnel will feature two underground tubes, each with three lanes, providing a six-lane signal-free corridor linking South Delhi with Dwarka and Gurugram. Designed with state-of-the-art safety and monitoring features — including electro-mechanical systems, fire safety, CCTV surveillance, control rooms, emergency exits, and cross-passages — the tunnel is expected to significantly decongest traffic on key stretches such as Rangpuri, Dhaula Kuan, Rao Tula Ram Marg, and NH-48. It will also enhance connectivity between Central and East Delhi and major expressways like the Delhi Expressway (NE-5), NH-44, NH-10, the Delhi-Jaipur Highway (NH-48), and the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway (NH-709B), via the Urban Extension Road and Dwarka Expressway. Calling the tunnel project 'the foundation for the Delhi of the future," CM Rekha Gupta said it would reshape the city's infrastructure landscape and offer long-term relief to millions of daily commuters.
