‘Not feasible': Madras HC dismisses plea to conduct excavation at Maruthur dam
The litigant S Kamaraj alias Muthanlankurichi Kamaraj stated in his petition that Maruthur dam was constructed 1,500 years ago on the rubble of an ancient temple built by a Pandya king. Citing that there were stone inscriptions in the dam, the origins of which can be traced back to the 13th century, Kamaraj requested the court to direct the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the state archaeology department to conduct excavations at the dam using scientific methods and publish a report of the findings.
The government counsel, representing the archaeology department, submitted a report stating that the inspection was conducted by the officials of the department, and it was found that the subject site was not feasible for excavation.
The case was heard by a bench of justices S M Subramaniam and A D Maria Clete. They observed that no further adjudication is necessary in the petition and dismissed the case.

Report sought on plans for letting devotees into Kanagasabai at Chidambaram temple
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has directed the commissioner of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department to constitute a committee to hold inspection and find out how the arrangements, made by the Podhu Dikshidars, for allowing devotees to offer worship from the Kanagasabai in the Natarajar Temple in Chidambaram, are working. A division bench of justices R Suresh Kumar and S Sounthar issued the orders recently when the petitions against a 2022 HR&CE order to allow worship from Kanagasabai came up for hearing recently. The bench said the inspection shall be held for three days and a report shall be filed on or before August 20. The order was passed after senior counsel CS Vaidyanathan, appearing for the Podhu Dikshidars, submitted that a scheme for allowing devotees into Kanagasabai through its western entry has been evolved and this arrangement has been followed since March this year. However, special government pleader for HR&CE NRR Arun Natarajan contended that the current arrangement, as submitted, is not a complete answer to the issue and it cannot be treated as an alternative to the government order. He further stated it may not be practically possible to permit more number of devotees through just one entry. The bench adjourned the matters to August 21.

SC junks Madras HC order banning use of CM name in schemes
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday quashed the Madras High Court's interim order that restrained the Tamil Nadu government from using Chief Minister M K Stalin's name and image in the 'Ungaludan Stalin' welfare outreach programme. Terming the plea by AIADMK MP C Ve Shanmugam 'totally misconceived' and an abuse of process of law, the apex court imposed a Rs 10 lakh fine on him, to be paid to the state within a week. A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India B R Gavai, and comprising Justices K Vinod Chandran and N V Anjaria, said the practice of naming welfare schemes after political leaders is common across the country, and selectively challenging one such scheme reflects political motive rather than genuine concern. 'We do not appreciate the anxiety of the petitioner to choose only one political party and one political leader,' the bench observed. 'If the petitioner was so concerned about the misuse of public funds, he could have challenged all such schemes.' The court noted that even during the AIADMK's tenure, many schemes were branded after CM J Jayalalithaa as 'Amma' initiatives. Senior advocates Mukul Rohatgi and Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for the DMK and the state government respectively, cited similar schemes in support of their case.

Erode farmers seek CM's intervention to renovate LBP Canal
Citing frequent breaches in the Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) main canal that are disrupting agricultural activities, farmers have urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to initiate a comprehensive renovation project and ensure consistent water supply in the district. In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister and submitted to the district administration on Wednesday (August 6, 2025), members of the Keel Bhavani Murai Neer Pasana Vivasayigal Kootamaippu and the Keel Bhavani Ayacut Nila Urimaiyalargal Sangam said the ayacut areas were facing acute water shortage. They said crops had withered over the past four months, resulting in financial losses. Surplus water is being released from Bhavanisagar Dam and farmer associations requested the government to utilise the water. Following repeated appeals, water was released from the Dam into the canal on July 31, earlier than the customary date of August 15. However, a breach at the 13th mile of the canal at Vandipalayam in Sathyamangalam taluk led to substantial water loss before it could reach the farmlands. The letter pointed out that between 2021 and 2025, six major breaches had occurred in the main canal after water release for irrigation. The farmers urged the Chief Minister to investigate the cause of these recurring breaches, particularly since the government had already spent ₹710 crore on canal renovation. They also noted that the government had informed the Madras High Court of its readiness to allocate an additional ₹200 crore for the project. 'Despite these investments, the canal has lost its operational efficiency,' the letter stated. 'Instead of renovating the entire canal as recommended by hydrology experts, the work appears to have been done selectively based on the preferences of local residents,' it added. The letter further expressed concern about the canal's ability to supply water throughout the irrigation season. This uncertainty, it said, has created serious anxiety among farmers, many of whom are now hesitant to transplant paddy or continue with cultivation.
