The report provides a systematic analysis of the far-reaching impact of sustainable tourism on economic growth, cultural exchange, and ecological conservation. It also offers forward-looking strategic insights and professional recommendations for the development of mountain tourism in the Asia-Pacific region. The event also witnessed the release of the Enjoy the Wonder of Mountains, Share the Natural Beauty—The 'International Mountain Tourism Day 2025" Gran Canaria Initiative. The initiative, grounded in the concepts of mutual learning among civilizations and integrative innovation, calls on governments, enterprises, communities, and other stakeholders to strengthen cooperation, actively promote environmentally friendly tourism, and jointly build an open, inclusive, and mutually enriching mountain civilization.
Dominique de Villepin, Chairman of the International Mountain Tourism Alliance (IMTA), and Christine Brew, Representative of UN Tourism, exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
'The IMTD has now emerged as a vital platform, not only showcasing the rich and varied values of our mountain regions but also fostering deeper exchanges within our industry and strengthening international collaboration,' said Dominique de Villepin, Chairman of the International Mountain Tourism Alliance (IMTA). He emphasized that this year's Theme Events—held against the backdrop of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the EU, and the 20th anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Spain—will carry forward the spirit of 'Mutual Understanding among People.' By bringing together the insights and expertise of industry leaders, it will be a powerful force in fostering cultural inclusiveness and deepening the bonds between China and Europe.
Miguel Sanz, General Director of Turespaña, noted that mountain tourism is one of the key directions for the future of global tourism. Turespaña is fully committed to promoting the sustainable transformation of Spain's tourism sector, aiming to achieve a balanced development that aligns environmental protection, social responsibility, and economic growth. The goal is to foster a new tourism model that is green, low-carbon, and enhances residents' well-being.
Liang Nan, Counsellor of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Spain, stated that on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between China and Spain, he expressed hope that mountain tourism, as a unique vehicle, would further deepen cultural exchanges between the two countries. He also invited more Spanish friends to appreciate the grandeur of China's landscapes and the charm of its civilization, and to jointly open a new chapter in China-Spain tourism cooperation.
Christine Brew, Representative of UN Tourism, emphasized that mountain tourism is a vital tool for promoting inclusive development, environmental protection, and cultural heritage preservation—particularly through its strong linkages to community empowerment and rural revitalization. She underscored that mountain tourism plays a key role in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), directly contributing to multiple targets.

The China-Spain Cultural and Tourism Exchange Exhibition showcased the natural and cultural landscapes of mountain destinations in both countries through fine brush paintings and photographic works. The 'Night of Gran Canaria' Welcome Dinner featured a spectacular blend of traditional Chinese intangible cultural heritage performances by ethnic minorities and the passionate expressions of Spanish folk art. Together, they created a vivid scene of mutual cultural appreciation and harmonious coexistence between civilizations, set against the backdrop of mountains and seas.

Birkenstock's Wholesale Business Is Booming: Here's Why
Birkenstock Holding plc has much to be happy about in its third quarter earnings report. Key highlights from executives during its third quarter earnings conference call include how a shift to in-person shopping will benefit Birkenstock's wholesale business over DTC retail operations, what levers are available to manage the 15 percent U.S.-EU tariffs, and why select price increases so far hasn't slowed consumer demand. More from WWD Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union Model Coastal Footwear Looks at Martha's Vineyard EXCLUSIVE: First Look at Birkenstock's Store in Milan Are Flip-flops Bad News for Your Feet? Here's What Podiatrists Really Think About Summer's Hottest Shoe Trend 'We continue to see the shift to in-person shopping, which amplifies our brand. We are a touch-and-feel product, especially for consumers who are new to the brand,' Birkenstock CEO Oliver Reichert told investors on the call. 'We have over 12,000 high-quality touch points through our B2B partners compared to our own fleet of 90 doors. That is why this shift in consumer behavior favors our B2B channel over DTC.' He said the brand is winning at retail as it gains shelf space and takes market share. 'In a flat U.S. market, retail revenue at our top 10 wholesale partners was up 25 percent. As you do your channel checks for back-to-school, you will hear that Birkenstock is the winner with very strong sellout and fast inventory turns,' the CEO said. Reichert said the same is true for the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) region. 'Retail revenue at our top 10 partners was up 20 percent. Within our B2B channel, over 90 percent of the growth came from within existing doors. We are committed to maintaining relative scarcity and managing tightly our distribution growth,' he explained. The company is on track to reach its goal of 100 stores by the end of the current fiscal year. Birkenstock has accelerated the pace of store openings, adding 13 new doors thus far. The expectation is a return of CapEx within 12 to 18 months of an opening, helped by higher average selling prices and higher units per transaction from the first day of a store's opening. Reichert said the store openings allow the brand to capture more in-person shopping demand within its own DTC business since the stores can showcase the brand's full product assortment. 'Our brand heat is stronger than before,' Reichert said, noting full-price sell-throughs and Birkenstock's strong order book. He also cite the emerging youth market as a runway for growth. 'Our demand is strong across all product categories and target groups. Sales of our [classic] silhouettes grew double digits. Demand for our iconic styles, such as the Arizona and Boston remains strong and is accelerating within the younger demographic,' the CEO said, adding that at the same time, 'we are growing in expansion categories such as laced-up shoes.' He noted that closed-toe share of revenue increased by 400 basis points year-over-year. CFO Ivica Krolo said that B2B growth outpaced D2C in the quarter, with B2B revenue up 18 percent and DTC up 12 percent, both on a constant-currency basis. D2C share of the business was 38 percent, down 110 basis points versus the same year-ago quarter. 'B2B has proven to be the most cost-efficient way to target new consumer groups,' he said. 'We now expect B2B growth to outpace D2C in both the fourth quarter and for the full year.' As a demand-driven brand, Krolo said the company is strategically allocating product to where the consumer is shopping. 'And unlike our peers, we own our supply chain. The B2B order book provides predictability and de-risks our planning,' the CFO noted. Krolo also said that the company can manage the impact of the baseline 15 percent EU tariff through actions already taken, including targeted price increases. He said in the first quarter that Birkenstock would only need a low-single-digit price increase globally for a full offset of the tariff impact. On Thursday's call, the CFO elaborated on other tools at Birkenstock's disposal: 'Pricing is not the only lever we have. Given our vertical integration, additional levers include efficiencies in production, vendor negotiations, the optimization of the product mix and the allocation of products between the regions.' The CFO also disclosed that the brand entered 2025 with an effective tariff rate of 11 percent, which at one point went up to 21 percent in April when including the 10 percent reciprocal rate. While noting that the manageability of the new baseline, he also said, 'We have some items that are already tariffed at over 15 percent and those higher tariffs, historical tariffs, will remain in place.' As for price increases in the U.S. due to anticipated higher costs connected to tariff increases, David Kahan, president of Americas, said price adjustments for select styles became effective on July 1 and that the brand has 'seen no impact whatsoever since we took our pricing increases.' With six weeks past the price actions under its belt, recent channel checks indicate 'velocity and sell-through' for the brand from July and into the second week of August, Kahan explained. He said that period includes a significant portion of the U.S. back-to-school season, adding that sales have been 'exceptional and it's escalated even beyond the selling results we had in Q3, which historically was when we would have high spring peak sell-throughs.' Kahan also that 90 percent of growth is from existing doors due to more styles, stock-keeping units and some added depth in inventory. And EMEA president Mehdi Nico Bouyakhf reiterated growth for the brand in the region, noting that same-store sales in retail rose double-digits and price increases for Spring-Summer 2025 didn't see any consumer pushback, resulting in full price sales at over 90 percent. Contributing to full-price sales was a structural demand issue in the quarter where consumer appetite for the brand was greater than product availability, Bouyakhf said. Members of the management team have said that the brand overall tends to limit production capacity to maintain a level of scarcity in the market. For the three months ended June 30, net income jumped 73.1 percent to 129.2 million euros, or 0.69 euros a diluted share, from 74.6 million euros, or 0.40 euros, a year ago. Revenue for the period rose 12.4 percent to 635.0 million euros from 564.8 million euros a year ago. For the six months, net income rose 82.9 percent to 254.5 million euros, or 1.36 euros a diluted share, from 139.1 million euros, or 0.74 euros, in the same year-ago period. Revenue rose 16.5 percent to 1.57 billion euros from 1.35 billion euros. The company on Thursday reiterated it prior guidance for fiscal 2025, with revenue growth expected at the high end of a 15 percent to 17 percent range on a constant currency basis. Meanwhile, Birkenstock 1774 has been busy reimagining the classics to give consumers a reason to buy the brand's footwear. April saw the launch of a nylon version of the Arizona sandal — Karl Birkenstock debuted the original silhouette in 1973 — in several monochrome colors. That was followed in May with Birkenstock 1774 and Maharishi teaming up to launch its outdoor Mogami Terra Tech sandal. Report – Roma Star's Rumored Move To Inter Milan Doesn't Impact Interest In Atalanta Star
Inter Milan reportedly don't consider deals for Ademola Lookman and Manu Kone to be mutually exclusive. This according to Italian outlet They report that the Nerazzurri want to sign Kone for around €30 million, and then also invest in Lookman. The Nerazzurri reportedly see the France international as an ideal profile for the holding midfield position. Inter have no shortage of midfielders who can play in a more advanced role. However, midfielders like Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Hakan Calhanoglu are not as well-suited to playing in a double pivot. Inter Don't See Lookman & Kone Deals To Be Mutually Exclusive DUBLIN, IRELAND – MAY 22: Ademola Lookman of Atalanta BC bites their winner's medal as he celebrates victory after the UEFA Europa League 2023/24 final match between Atalanta BC and Bayer 04 Leverkusen at Dublin Arena on May 22, 2024 in Dublin, Ireland. (Photo by) In the meantime, Inter have also been trying to sign Ademola Lookman for weeks now. That pursuit has come to a virtual standstill. Therefore, the fact that Inter are now also reportedly trying to make a big investment in central midfield could suggest that they have all but given up on signing Lookman. According to the Gazzetta dello Sport, however, that is not exactly the case. Inter are hoping to sign Kone for a fee of around €30 million, reports the Gazzetta. And in the meantime, the Nerazzurri are also working to offload a couple other midfielders. They want to sell Piotr Zielinski and Kristjan Asllani. Then, Inter could still have the financial wiggle room to invest in a deal for Lookman.

Investors temper Ukraine hopes ahead of Trump and Putin summit
By Marc Jones LONDON (Reuters) -Investors are tempering expectations that Friday's summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will deliver a significant breakthrough on the war in Ukraine despite some hopeful signs. Ukraine's government bonds - key indicators of the mood - rallied when news of the summit emerged this month but have largely stalled at a still-distressed 55 cents on the dollar amid the pre-meeting posturing. Trump himself said it will be more of a "listening exercise" although he hopes it will go well enough for another involving Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy soon afterwards - and threatened "severe consequences" if it doesn't. Europe's leaders meanwhile have been encouraged by Trump's signals on participating in security guarantees, while Putin has praised Trump for "sincere efforts" to stop the hostilities. Kathryn Exum, an analyst at emerging market-focused fund Gramercy, said the fact Ukraine's bonds remain well below the highs they hit when Trump regained the White House despite their near 20% rally this month reflected limited market expectations. "The bar is pretty high for any meaningful progress given the red lines of the parties seem deeply entrenched," Exum said. "I think the market is pricing in a symbolic truce," such as on long-range missiles and drones, she added. "Ultimately though is doesn't change the game for any side." MODEST Diliana Deltcheva, head of emerging market debt at Robeco, said EU leaders' calls with Trump on Wednesday, when he offered a potentially significant but vague security offer, were a "modest positive". But she too thinks Friday's summit is unlikely to yield substantive progress. "We had a small overweight (in Ukraine bonds) but now we have neutralised it," Deltcheva said. "From our position, is it too difficult to call the situation... there have been too many false starts." Geopolitical analyst at research firm TS Lombard, Christopher Granville, thinks whatever its ostensible outcome, Friday's meeting will mark the "definitive start of the concluding phase of the Ukraine war". "One way or the other, the situation is on a quickening path," Granville said. Either the sides would find a path towards a lasting ceasefire, or the war would ratchet up and ultimately force the issue. Ukraine's bonds, part of a $20 billion restructuring last year, were up as much 1 cent Thursday, just below the five month highs they hit earlier in the week. Oil and gas prices have fallen over the last fortnight too, traders say, on hopes of a post-summit "peace dividend" that could avoid costly 'secondary' tariffs being put on major Russia crude buyers like India and China. Investment bank surveys show the majority of fund managers have a small 'overweight' position on Ukraine's bonds, although it has been reducing over the last six months. Gramercy's Exum said investors remain wary because Trump has repeatedly changed tack on the war. His trolling of Zelenskiy as a "dictator" in February and the ugly Oval Office clash shortly afterwards, was "a wakeup call" for overly optimistic investors she said. Robeco's Deltcheva described that meeting as "traumatising", both in terms of the human aspect and for assumptions around the U.S. position. "We all saw how Zelenskiy got treated and how Trump's opinion changed," she said, which made it more difficult for investors to rely on Trump's stance. If Friday's discussion surprises on the positive side though, "then we will probably have to react," she said.
